So just want to introduce myself to the members here. I been building layouts with my father since I can remember (I am 28). My fathers been into trains forever aswell. So we recently started a new MTH DCS 12x16 close to high rail as possible. Previous layout was 1950's era conventional which is featured on my YouTube.  Lots of progression pics on my Facebook of new layout and weekly YouTube.  Is it ok to post updates on here frequently ? -Andrew
Here's my Channel be sure to check out the newest videos . Up date from a weeks work coming soon

HAHA! its all practice , trail and error. using all foam is tricky cause its rather square and not flexible.

Go to your local dollar tree get the black foam  board its $1 works great for templates and lichen walls if needed.  there cheap glue works great too..

Thanks all!!

Lots Done tonight  video of all the pics coming soon on youtube once its back up. hopefully some video tomorrow night of the upper line in action. Time to pick the next are to work. Most likely the back wall tunnel portal and area behind the bridge. then place some trees on on the recently done land.
Happy Model Rail Roading ! -Andrew

The walls are from ultimate scenery, we get them at a store by Strasburg RR actually. easiest to cut with a table saw or scroll saw. you can call the guy that makes them too if needed thats how i got my HO walls. low temp Hot glue gun works the best to mount them . I use alot of stuff from walmart and dollar tree black foam board is great for all sorts of uses $1 for 20x30 works great for making templates.

Scenic Express sells ones that are light wait foam and little easier to work with , there called Featherlight but they been on back order a while. that's what the stone bridge is made from..

I'm glad I came across this thread.  The layout looks awesome.  Loved the videos and pictures.  I liked how you put together several tunnel portals to make the bridge.  Looks really good.  I see you ballasted the roadbed on the Realtrax.  Nice touch.  Looks a lot more realistic.

Thanks Kon for sharing your layout with us.  Looking forward to more updates and videos.

Layout looks great & seems to be coming along nicely!  A quick question - what's the clearance under the arch bridge to the level below?  Or, more precisely, how high is the track level over the plywood below?  I'm in the early stages of layout planning myself & am thinking of having a similar bridge over track below and would like an idea of how much room I need to leave.  Thanks.

Fridge-I go with 7" too. There are a few cars tall enough to warrant it. Allows extended pantographs(still shorter than the few tall cars). Any future chance of a catenary will need about that too.

Nice layout! Complexed, BIG! You may wish to avoid leaking an original project, or two, and try submitting them for a possible magazine feature first, and maybe earn a buck, or two to go with the fame.

Oh!....Welcome!

THANKS!!! Yea I want to try to get in a magazine, our lighting needs to be better too... I probabaly leaked way to much already lol. theres still lots to do and details waited to be added like all the people we have to place and finish cover other areas...

Hey I forgot about rail head height differences form road beds. Minimum 6-5/8" for me from rail head up.

Starting this post, I realized I did not check under a taller O tubular track, and had carved an intricate cliff tip right in the path of the pantographs. Broke it off just now. no more carving even needed.

My tallest is a tmcc E-44 Virginian. Pant.s up, and contacts tilted, it needs 6-1/4" from railhead up.

Thank you every one for the Positive feedback!

Very nice!  What did you use for the water, some sort of epoxy?  Or a commercial product?

Thanks.  I was figuring ~1/2" for the roadbed & rails.

LOL!   My Racing buddy Says that to me, He said I should put RATH OF THE KON on my dragster lol

Sorry Kon, I know, old stuff! But we don't hear it as often, and I'm easily amused .

Just finished watching the two latest videos.  The bridge and water scene looks great!  The trees added in the corner make that scene complete.  Seeing five trains running at the same time... AWESOME!  The heritage units are nice.  Saw the Reading unit a couple years ago at Horseshoe Curve while filming.

Layout is getting there Kon.  Thanks for keeping us posted.

Thank you very much!  with the snow coming, I will probably be home tomorrow getting a lot done. only problem is the store i pass on my way home from work  was closed and wanted to pick up more trees.....

 Tonight's work

more tall grass done, coarse turf and wild brush. Forest floor under the trees.

for under Conifer and pine trees these two mixed and add fine earth. works great.

http://shop.bachmanntrains.com/index.php…

TIP: if you drill holes (into Wood) to place trees in layout, Drill and place trees before you add glue and ground cover , Remove the trees in the area you want add ground cover to. find a box of screws to put in the holes where the trees where. no mess or working around the trees..

Hope all the East Coaster's here Stay safe in the snow.

THANK YOU!   I have been busy this week and probably did more work then I posted here.  We just changed some things around 2 tonight in the yard area, where the diesels we switched out where parked. keeping all 4 lashed with 16 cars. that area will become industrial sidings. some ideas planed. lots of room  to add nice freight cars and maybe a modern switcher

Hi Kon, I'm glad you did. I lost track of your progress. I often think about that stream too. Its nice to reattach the memory back to the maker.

I took a hiatus from online use for near a year too. Since my return I've learned a few tricks for Android use, if you are still having issues drop me an email Ill share my work arounds. Hit or miss, but beats striking out.

I'm catch ring up on mail, but will bookmark and review what I've missed soon.  (Don't you love that autocorrect is shut off but google insists on meddling anyhow? My spelling sucks, but my vocabulary beats anything they have going for sure. I really can't wait till this thing dies, I hate it and want another laptop; never lost it, battery lasted longer, better call quality, and worked better and easier.  Typing speed is a joke. How folks like them, a mystery. Maybe they never used a PC?)

Bump? I just consider this an update, not a bump. To me a bump is a useless posts just to keep something in the recent column. I don't even consider a one line joke a bump. Its more about the intent to me. I don't think many would disagree. I don't even consider a question gone unanswered then bumped, a bump. Timed reasonably and as courteously as possible of course.

Happy Holidays Kon.

I agree with Adriatic's comments on bumping.  I am glad you did.  That is a nice review of the layout.  If a picture is worth a thousand words, a video is worth a million.  I like your simple but effective lift up bridge.  I will be doing something similar on my new layout.  So it looks like you have a hidden track by the furnace.  Does that go to some off layout staging or is just a loop to get back around the layout?

I hope you are able to stick around and share some details of your layout!  Thank you!

Thanks  Mark! the lift bridge is simple and practical. So the Main outside Loop Enters that room in the tunnel you see the big boy sitting in. makes a left along the back wall behind the heater and comes across the bridge on to outside section of the layout Passes the downtown area into yard takes a 1/2 turn onto the main layout to cross the creek.  Prior to November 2016 the outside of the layout was a Staging yard.  Dad and I kept saying it would be neat to make trains run around the outside so,  with out redoing all sorts of stuff we cut out the old oil tank and cleaned up and added 4x6 of layout in there plus removed the wall to.

Also theres a 20FT siding that wraps around the heater room for a 16 car Modern line pulled by 4 engines. video coming soon

YouTube doesn't really work well for me anymore, but I'll try. Second device, second provider since July too. I cant even send feedback or enter the help forums even if it does play. (Though a couple channels always seem ok..?) I think it worked about 2-3 days a month on average. I couldn't even start a new thread here till a week or two ago. Other than a thank you for it now working, my last new thread was August, lol. Reply is fine,. Likes are iffy. Attachment tool &full composer iffy.

Kon,

Yes simple and practical, my two middle names!!  Is that the Empire Builder in that video?  Sounds great!  The dog thought I was running the train!

Thank you for all the photos and videos.

Thanks Mark!!   Yeah the station announcements are the empire builder too.  The cars we had on a shelve are from 2001 there's 3 more that we'll never find that go with the set too but not that worried cause we have no more yard space.

Also I have another video showing the outside loop and two trains at same time that's going on YouTube tomorrow. I'll post.  Hopefully starting the back mountain tomorrow been sick all week and resting after work.

The  red white & blue unit is very cool, the Hiawatha cars too... but together like that, it stalled my brain once the observation car rolled past .

At least it was behind a diesel I actually like a lot .

(ya know, you've likely named it, but"AK Noise" wouldn't be a bad dragster name either. ... there's always the next incarnation  )

(and youtube played upside-down today. Still hit and miss there and I'm on a different device now; I used to figure it was local IP servers, but those aren't involved anymore; youtube just hates me )

The Milwaukee 156 is pretty cool at the time we couldn’t find anything else to pull the cars the steam engine is on the shelve needs a board.. a lot of the Milwaukee cars exist still so it’s kinda fictional fun idea. Next layout we’ll have the steam engine updated probably and have an electric maybe too.

Ha dragster don’t have a name besides my 1st child. If we ever get another will my fiancé’s ride so will be our 2nd child cause our dog is our 1st lol.

Just found your thread - nice work on the layout! Looks good and runs well. Some nice scenic detail all around like the cracked asphalt.

I am not a fan of the burning switch tower - negativity in a very positive layout - but, it's a reality check.

Thanks for posting the new update

Merry Christmas to you and Dad - that's the best part - having the time together doing this

Thank you! Yeah it’s fun the last he’s been working 2nd shift so I rarely see him but Monday he was home for the last ground cover.

 Merry Christmas you too.

Just a Quick Update, been Super busy with so many things the past month and now back to layout focus somewhat.

Some changes in the track plan are going to happen this week and Some Orange Boxes will be coming in at the local store For my father..  Buying them boxes made us finally commit to an important  track change. So sometime saturday will have  an extra loop and three will all be 072 and bigger.

For now i am going to leave a new camera angle since getting a new tripod for close up track side views.

Great layout, nice video. Surprised that "Orange boxes" require larger diameter curves

Yes, it is easy to skim the general threads, or only look at the Recent Posts column too much!  Andrew has been doing a great job here on this one!

Hello all , big announcement here.    After almost 4 years and many changes it’s time for  complete rebuild.  New layout will be 23x21 42” off the walls with a 96” less wide island.  We figured out how to go through the steps so no more lift bridges or crawling under it.

I don’t get on here much but I’ll try to..

Stay tuned

I will. I am so busy Always but want to post more as time goes on, we have a lot planned out already having so much stuff.

Kon, he is right on exposure being better there, but as a record of what you have done, this thread is "safer".  "What did you do on your layout today" gets "cleaned" by ogrf staff on occasion, so there is no guarantee that it will be there tomorrow.

Better might be to post there occasionally, and save the details for posterity in this thread.

Looks good Andy!  It is great you have enough space for those wide curves and a turntable and roundhouse!!

Thanks ! Not sure about a round house yet cause it will also be in a super easy spot to reach too.  But yes the whole idea of the new layout is run ability and access.  The turntable will be 36” too.   There was a lot of planning before we started the rebuild.  Hopefully Friday we will have lots more done. Just hard to find time too. Probably working a lot of OT this week too.

The grade is less then 3% at the worst spots tested a few rolling stock items all worked out good. Hopefully have all the track done Friday night. Ordered turntable parts and have a good idea on how I’m building that.

Other good news sold all the old mth track in less then a week too..

Kon,  Great work on the new layout!  I especially like how you re-purposed the middle table into a round table.   On your custom turntable, did you consider using a circle of say O31 or O42 with a unused pair of trucks to support the turntable bridge?  I cant see in the videos/pics how the ends of the bridge is supported thru the 360 degree arc.

Thank you.  There’s actually part of the old Layout under the island area still lol. It was helpful for a shelve too. We really thaught everything out for operations with a turntable.

the rail idea I tried atlas and super hard to get every thing right. So I have saucer bearings on the middle and ends. The middle set rolls on a metal plate wire a power wire connected. I know it’s not super prototype stuff, but I think I have $200 into the whole thing that’s including a belt drive set up I am probably going to install.  Also a voltage regulator mite be In the future.

I am probably going to do a video when I find time of the whole thing the way it is now..

Right now the Motor is connected to a 8mm rod to a hub on the bridge. The under side has a 8mm bearing to keep it aligned and smooth

Looks great!!  Congratulations on your first trip to York.  I made my first trip last October, and it was great.  I went again this past April.  I didn't buy much, but what I did buy was unique and at nice prices.  I don't really go to shows and meets to buy much, my interest is just seeing everything and meeting folks I know and new folks.  I met several ORG forum members for the first time.  Have a great time!!!!
