Good evening all, I appreciate any help in advance.

I have a Lionel Legacy L1, part number 2331022.  It has been a great smoker.  Unfortunately, due to life I haven't run it for a couple weeks.  Yesterday I turned the trains on and had the L1 idling on a track while I was testing a new piece or rolling stock.  It was sitting there smoking really good so I assumed it had fluid and everything was fine.  After about 2 or 3 minutes I walked closer to the part of the layout the L1 was and it smelled like something is burning, the smoke also seemed darker but that could he my imagination.  So, I drove it closer and the smoke unit smells like something is burning.  Oddly enough it is still smoking great so I added more fluid wondering if maybe the top part of the wick dried down, still have the smell really bad.  I decided to let it sit for the night and see what happened.  Today the smoke unit still smells pretty bad but is smoking great other than it seems like the whistle steam isn't working.

Unfortunately, I don't have the expertise to tear this couple month old engine apart, so I have a few questions.

Anything thoughts on what is wrong?

I am debating a few things without tearing the engine apart.

First, run it more and see what happens.  I probably about about 30 minutes on it since yesterday and doesn't seem any better.

Trying the odor remover from JT, although I don't have any but I could order some.

Putting some smoke fluid down the whistle steam hole on the top of the engine.  I don't know enough about how this is connected or how the smoke unit in this engine works.  I have seen pictures of two separate chambers in a smoke unit with whistle steam but I assume they have a way or sharing fluid, if this engine even has this type of smoke unit.

I was doing some searching last night and saw some feedback on if it is smoking don't worry about it but the smell is pretty bad, to the point the wife likely will have me shut off the smoke unit and it is my only engine with whistle steam so I would like the feature working.

I appreciate the help.

This is it smoking from today.  Please forgive the lame layout it is work in progress.

Thank you, I typically add about half to 2/3 of a lionel fluid dropper at a time.  Yesterday, while I was looking into this, I added 1 and a half droppers.  I didn't count but I suspect well over 20-30 drops and I don't think the unit was dry before as it was smoking well the entire time.

Is the burning smell likely from part of the wick burning up?  Is the smell something I should worry about?

Also, thoughts on why the whistle smoke doesn't work?

Thank you for your help.
