Does this qualify for the 59 club? It's an old 2 piece ping pong tablePXL_20220910_175912467

Welcome to the club Donnie! Your ping pong table gets you in as a Division 59 member and on a personal note I love the NYC F3s you're running. I have a set of Williams NYC PA units pulling my passenger set and I've never liked the shininess of it so at some point I really need to find me a proper F3 set.

And for the group, I've also encountered a problem with my SCARM program, it seems to be not saving my designs once I've made a change in something, as an example, I design a simple oval layout and save it, I pull it up later and add another loop or some switches and save it but when I pull it up later it's back to the first iteration of the layout. I did finally delete it and reinstall it and seems to be working fine now but I'm back to square one on the past 2 weeks of layout designs for the Club. Has anyone else ever had an issue like that or am I just one of those unlucky with computer stuff guys here? That being said this week will have 3, possibly 4 layouts added to our collection one of which is based on an idea by forumite Khayden93 for a Halloween design so a big shout out to him for the idea!

Well let me get back to trying to remember exactly what I wanted the layouts to look like so til later in the week, GOOD NIGHT FOLKS!

Big fan of the NYC F3's too !

I was already in the 48 club, but I now I have to ask to join the 59 club lol....  I jut purchased a FACTORY American Flyer 5x9 foot dealer display layout so I can't imagine anything more appropriate!  It's a 1953  # 150 dealer layout and includes all the accessories shown except the 583 crane and 596 water tower, but I think I will add those two as they fit the theme and era perfectly. I have a thread over in the S gauge page documenting the restoration as well if curious.

I saw the other thread on it while I was lurking on the forum (had a big family event at home and it pretty much sucked up all my free time over the past few weeks, translated my wife decided to have the first big family get together after my parents passing and I had forgotten how much went into something like that). I'm always fascinated by any old layouts that someone comes across and I've seen very few if any American flyers over the years like yours. I hope you keep us informed with the restoration of it as you move forward on it.

On to 48 Club business...

This weeks layout was inspired by a thread by Khayden93s coffin shaped layout.   LINK

48102822

You start by taking two triangles off a standard 4x8 sheet of plywood, one 18x36 the other 18x60...

48102822plycut

You flip them over to the other side giving you this configuration, your good old fashioned Dracula/Cowboy coffin shape !

48102822lay

Now this one involves a whole lot of cutting of track and a lot of it is curved sections which SCARM isn't too clear about if the length is inside rail point to point or outside rail point to point on the curves, but here is the track list for this design.

5 - O31 curves

2 - O36 curves (Menards)

13 - 10" straights

1 - 51/2" straight

2 - 2" straights

1 - RCS section

1- Pair O22 switches

Cut straights...

1 - 8.7"

1 - 7.2"

1 - 6.5"

1 - 5.25"

1 - 5"

1 - 4.9"

1 - 3.7"

2 - 3"

1 - 2.3"

Cut curves...

A sections

4 - 4.57"

B sections

3 - 10.66"

C sections

6 - 7"

Now again, I'm not sure of where exactly the cuts need to be made on the curves, I tried using the tape measure feature but...

tape0tape1tape2

tape3

So you see the measurements seemed to be somewhat possessed and given the season how apropos . Your best bet if attempting this one is to make your own measurements to avoid any issues.

So until later folks...

HAPPY HALLOWEEN !!!

I know I haven't posted much in a while but still wanted to pop in and wish everyone a very Merry Christmas!

Hopefully we can get things back to normal but life has a way of interfering with the best of plans but between work and remodeling the basement (among several other projects) I'm kinda missing the Covid days where I had tons of free time on my hands being laid off.

But I will leave you with this 48 Club Christmas boxcar I did manage to cobble together a week or so ago...

48club2022xmas1

And another version with a sprig of holly...

48club2022xmasA

I took a page from the old school MTH playbook and went with a religious type of art work, lots of pretty cool looking cards and graphics for Christmas from that era!

Well I hope everyone out there has a safe and Merry Christmas and be careful out in that cold and snow tonight if you have to venture out.

And please remember the real meaning for the season...

To make it socially acceptable for grown men to play with toy trains!

Soon to be applicant for the 48 Club.

Dragged home an old setup from 2003-004 when I setup some trains for my kids at my mothers.

As brought home in the 1st pic.

2nd Pic:

I built up a Table Base using the Lynn Wescot How to build Bench work as a general guide. This is really light weight but amazingly strong and wobble free.

3rd & 4th Pics:

Before removing all the track I cleaned it with No-Ox and Scotchbrite pads.

Then I pulled ALL the Pins from the track chucked them up in my Dremel and cleaned them with No-Ox & Scotchbrite pads.

5th Pic:

Next Step is to service all the old O-22 Switches

Lastly My planned final Track Plan. I'll be adding a little more track and switches then were on the original.

CSXJOE that's the kind of layout I always liked as a kid, lots of action and accessories that make it look and feel a lot bigger than it really is, only thing missing is a tunnel !

As a side note what is the one thing that is a have to have on everyone's layout regardless of anything else, like I've mentioned a tunnel is mine especially one with a double portal .

Jerry

There seems to be a number of you guys out there whos layouts just missed being in the 48 Club so we have initiated a Division 59 wing of the club. It grew out of the fact that many layouts were built on old ping pong tables which measured 5'x9'. While those layout are a bit larger than the regulation 48s they still face many of the same obstacles as the rest of us do. So henceforth if your layout exceeds the 32 square foot rule but is 45 square feet or under you are eligible for Division 59 membership.

48div59

After having reached the Charter Membership goal of 48 on 3/22 we are announcing the formation of the Century Club. It will be open to the first 100 new members who sign on to the 48 Club and who do not fall under the Division 59 rules.

48century

After much discussion on an old post by fellow forumite Amfleet25124 about the trials and tribulations of those of our brethren who for one reason or another have embraced the model railroad world of the 4x8 sheet of plywood I am announcing the formation of The 48 Club. Much like the Brotherhood Of The Crappy Basement Layout it is some what informal, no dues, no officers, no meetings or the other nonsense that comes from being in a formal organization.

The requirements for inclusion are very simple...

A. The layout can be no larger than a 4x8 sheet of plywood or what can configured from a single sheet

     1. Hollow core door slab layouts are definitely allowed

B. It can be permanent or seasonal since many 4x8s are set up during the Christmas season

C. In keeping with its seasonal origins the main focus will be S and O gauge, however if yours is one of the other gauges you are still welcome to join.

Now to get a bit of club business out of the way...

For providing the inspiration for this club the titles of Founding Member, Honorary Member and Charter Member are given to:

    Amfleet25124

There are 4 forumites who are conferred with the title of Honorary Members for with out them this forum would not exist:

    Alan Arnold

    Allen Miller

    Rich Melvin

    Ed Boyle

If I've left anyone out please let me know.

In addition the first 48 forumites who join will be considered Charter Members, currently from the original post Amfleet started they are following:

   RSJB18

   Conductor Earl

   bptBill

CA John         ( his love of keilbasa and kishka gets him in on that alone LOL, you're a braver man than I john when it comes to kishka!  )

So let's see what you have done with the venerable ol' sheet of plywood or post track plans you've come up with that will fit the bill. To get the ball rolling here's one I've been working on in SCARM.

It uses 4 12"x96" strips of plywood to create a 9'x9' layout, I know it begs the question if I have room for 9x9 why am I just using a single sheet but one of the reasons many go with a 4x8 is the cost or work involved in a larger layout. This one allows you to have long runs while keeping scenery and buildings to a minimum. Besides I'm from the school of go big or go home and I'm pretty sure someone out there can come up with something even larger given the same constraints.

Jerry

Hi Jerry,

Love your layout idea using only 4x8 sheet of plywood!  Can I join your club? How about a bunkbed mounted division?  I built a small 5x6 layout with 48" outer curves and 36" inner curves so my son who is autistic can run his BigBoy or my PRR T1 or a CabForward.  The room in my mobile home is only 10x12 so I didn't have much space to work with since there is also a 3x6 slot car layout as well!  IMG_0514IMG_0515

4x8' 0 gauge with some 027 can run 3 cabs max with 4 parking dead-ends for a total of 7 engines to switch out. It's so far an operational layout with constant power to all turnouts, designated power to all UCS and 6019 sections, and with lighting/buildings to come later. It is my first layout and I had no idea what I was doing...I just went for it. This layout use to be 16" off the floor and fold up on hinges when not in use. The new roller benchwork is way better...up higher and the layout is getting some needed TLC now that I can see it better Roller benchwork is comprised of 4 corner columns and 2 deck frames that bolt together at the corner columns.

What a great layout. Looks like a lot of fun to operate.

Bob

It is a challenge to load it up with trains and move them around. I'm currently testing/learning on it and making some needed changes/repairs. There are track section issues, engine issues, turnout switch woes, and the like, but it's compact enough to manage. There is a great "clickety-clack" sound (mostly at the crossings) from the heavier locomotives amidst the rumble of turning wheels that pound the deck...I love it.

I'm late to this hobby's party so I'm keeping it at 0-gauge Lionel postwar...anything more and I think my brain may explode. The scope and breadth of this hobby can be overwhelming. I'm grateful for all the help I have gotten to get it this far, and like many others, beyond the monetary valve, see a redeeming quality in keeping this hobby on track for younger generations to come, or at least that is what I tell myself while I build and test on it until the grandkids reach the age of 8 to adult.

The layout is in a basement, and it is a 4x8, and I did see the 48 Club threads awhile back and I have used the term "basement crappy 4x8" to describe my railroad--mostly because any 4x8 0-gauge is going to leave a guy wishing for more real-estate, eh. Later.

Adding rollers is something I've toyed around with but never tried to do, it would have made my last layout easier to work around. And consider yourself added to the rolls along with Roger Elliot.

I haven't been on the forum much due to work and the construction of a home bar in my old train room and a childrens book I have been trying to get off the ground in what little spare time I have and to be honest for a while I was feeling burned out by the whole club thing, it was becoming too much like work and sort of lost its enjoyment. But with the new bar coming along and a dedicated train room next to it I hope to get back into the swing of it. The new train room will be 12x13 so that kind of negates the whole 48 thing but rest assured a smaller "club legal" layout will be included in the bar area so there will be no conflict of interest.

And yes the book does contain references to toy trains, the main character having a modest layout in his basement as well as several of his children who share his love of them so as a result the Christmas storys have had the most fleshing out of the storys.

Well I've got to be going 4:30 comes pretty early.

Jerry

I'm happy to be an Honorary Member of the 48 Club, and do feel that I'm fairly well qualified for membership since 4x8 layouts are not really new to me. My re-entry into O gauge came in 1981 when I received Ron Hollander's All Aboard book about the history of Joshua Lionel Cowen and his Lionel Train Company. A short time later I had a 4x8 up and running in the 32nd floor apartment of the downtown Honolulu hi-rise I was living in at the time. Now, as recently as last year, I began construction of a 4x8 all-tinplate layout which I had hoped to have ready for prime time by now, but, unfortunately, progress has been delayed but not forgotten. Attached are photos of those two layouts.

HI Jerry,

Thanks for adding me and my son Christopher to your group.  Although he's 17 going on 18, Christopher has always been obsessed with trains in part due to his autism.  So, when the divorce hit and we worked it out where he would be with me every other week, I knew I had to have a layout for him.  In a tiny mobile home that makes a bit of a challenge.  I needed to be able to run his bigger engines so O48 and O36 were mandated for the design.  So how to find space?  Since the leftover room after putting in his bed wasn't enough to fit the parameters, I had a brainstorm and thought how about a layout on the upper bunk of a bunk bed?  So that's how we have what we have today.  There's enough switches and sidings to keep things interesting and a nice large outside loop to watch everything from a PRR T1 to a BigBoy run.  We've added some buildings and now I'm working on creating electrical blocks so that more than one engine can run.  Thanks again!  Roger

Merry Christmas to my fellow 48 Club members! I just realized today is my first visit to the OGR Forum since March 2022!  ( What happened? I fell into an  astronomy rabbit hole.)

I hope everyone is well and having a great holiday.

This  layout was in the holiday issue of OGR a year ago and has made an appearance in the other magazine this Christmas, but I can’t find a copy. Anyone seen it?

There’s a link to a video of this layout below, if you haven’t seen it.

Hi Will!

Merry Christmas!  Nice to meet another O gauge member who's into astronomy!  I've been into it off and on since I was 12.  Even started out as an astronomy major - never succeeded though.  I currently have a 4" refractor on a GOTO mount.

Cheers

Roger

I had thought about a boxcar and kicked around a couple ideas. Yours is interesting, I remember seeing it several times when I visited the B&O Museum, might be kind of hard to find an O gauge model of it to try it on. MTH has made a similar boxcar that might make a passable clone. Might make for an interesting modeling project.

This is what I worked up this evening, I'm figuring in keeping with the Art Deco style of the logo make it all black with yellow/gold lettering except for the hobo graffiti on the car. I wanted to use the Art Deco font for all the markings but they just didn't look right, almost overkill

And in an effort to actually make this car I'm looking into an HP Ghost White printer that uses colored toner and  white toner to make the decals. I've watched a few YouTube videos and it looks pretty good at making decals. Problem is it clocks in around $600 and a white toner cartridge is $200-300 depending on where you get it. I know I can use it for my other printing/computer needs but OUCH!  Another option would be to buy a less expensive printer that can take those toner cartridges. But I would then also be able to do my other 3 projects, an all white train with black lettering, an all black train with white lettering and an all glow in the dark train with black lettering using the standard boxcar, gondola, tank car, hopper and caboose pulled by that venerable work horse the Lionel 675.

I'll be totaling up the Charter Membership to see where we stand, I was going to do it this afternoon but I was busy watching SpaceX blow up another rocket, kinda making me rethink that whole buying a chance to go into space on a Falcon 9 thing, but I digress. I will post the membership roster hopefully tomorrow.

Jerry

Hey Jerry, Did you get any further with the 48 club box car idea?

Roger

HI Guys

The Elliott 48 bunk bed route has been rerouted!  I have changed the sidings a bit and lengthened the ovals a tad - just a skosh more.  I've added blocks to three sidings so more than one engine can be on the track at a time.  In fact, I now have it wired for two engines! You're thrilled I know..... but hey, this is how you spend your time when you catch a bout of covid (no fun).  Anyway, a few more tweaks and this top tier layout will be complete, except for scenery.

Great example of what can be done with O gauge in a small space.

Hope you make a speedy recovery.
