Legacy 1.52 and LCS - a few questions

John, the Legacy System Utility can be used with a USB to serial adapter for newer computers without traditional serial ports.

 

You do need Legacy v1.52 installed in order to use Layout Control System (LCS) devices like the LCS WiFi module.

 

There will be a new version of the Legacy System Utility for Windows that can connect to the LCS WiFi as an alternative to using a wired serial connection. However, that won't help you, as you first need to upgrade your Legacy Base to v1.52 before you could use the LCS WiFi. Alas, you are in a chicken-or-egg dilemma.

With so many other Legacy controls seeded within iOS is there perhaps a chance for an OSX application to upgrade Legacy bases and remotes? Obviously a virtual client exists on my machine. Just curious.

Rudy, wasn't there an issue with the way that the Mac handled serial ports that made the LSU difficult?  I remember that being mentioned some time back.

 

Lionel is still supplying separate modules for the Cab2 and base software with new legacy systems.

Can the base and cab2 software be put on a single writable module when you do the software update? Or do you make a cab2 module, load it into the cab2, overwrite the module with the base software, and then load the base?

 

You either need to overwrite as you described or create 2 modules.

So I guess I am way behind in upgrading...purchased one of the first 990s (maybe 2010) and just checked I am running version 1.4 on the base and handheld.  Was out of the hobby a couple of years due to illness and just getting back up to speed.  Would like to install LCS wifi this time around so will I be able to upgrade directly to the 1.52 version or will I need upgrade the other versions first like some other software requires?  Also I checked my box and I do have  the cable still in plastic for the upgrade, however I apparently have mis-placed the black module.  Can I purchase one from a Lionel dealer or is that something I need to go back to Lionel direct for.  Thanks for any help guys...appreciate it.

You can go directly to 1.52, and you don't have to send the box anywhere.  You can get black modules from Lionel or many dealers.  You can also refer to the following thread and make your own from some old blue modules as they're pretty useless once you've have that version loaded into the Legacy system.

Yes, which is odd because with Parallels it works great. So its something in the OS that Windows doesn't have to deal with. Usually it's the other way around

Easy to upgrade to 1.52.  I actually purchased the USB to serial before for something, not sure what, but thats ok.

 

Installed LCS wi-fi and that looks to be pretty cool.

 

The one thing that somewhat surprised me is that I basically just unplugged what was in my Legacy base and replaced that with the LCS wi-fi serial port connection.  Page 9 of the owners manual seems to show a connection using the Legacy Y cable.

 

Did I do something wrong?   The engines on my track still recognized the Cab 2 remote.  I have not tried the iPad yet.
