Happy Memorial Day weekend.......this is my son Charles who in his younger days was my partner on our home layout and frequently accompanied me to York.......these pics are from 25 years ago and the ad was in OGR the winter of 2001.

Fast forward about 20+ years........he graduated UVA Law school in 2019 and for the past 5 years he has practiced corporate law in Center City, Philadelphia. This spring he joined the JAG Corps of the Army and today he completes his "basic training". He comes home today and starts the JAG Law School (which is in Charlottesville)......and, at the end of the Summer goes back to his firm in Philly, while serving as a reserve officer.

My wife and I are very proud of him!

Peter, congratulations to Charles, you and the entire family.  Your pride is warranted.  My daughter served in the Air Force and my son just graduated from the Sheriff's Academy in Suffolk County, NY.  My wife and I are so proud of their accomplishments and their desire to serve.

The trains look good too!

Happy Friday!

Last weekend, my youngest son & I attended the train show at the NCTM in Spencer, NC.  I picked up a bunch of rolling stock and 3 engines

Probably the best deal I got was this UP GP38 w/ Trainsounds for $30!

Picked up another ICG U36B - the price was too good to pass up -

and a MPC GN EP5.  I always hesitated buying this one, as I have the postwar version which belonged to my dad, but for $60, I couldn't pass it up.  I posed it with my dad's original from 1959 and you can see some differences in the orange & the font.

My son posing in front of the museum's Southern F unit  -

Did some scenery work on the road & watchman's shack -

Did some more scenery work on the town area - added some snow drifts & a guardrail

Have the Metro North M7s on the layout today  -

A few pictures from our trip to Richmond last weekend…arrived and departed from the historic Main Street Station, a stones throw from the famous triple bridges…a shot of the old Southern Railway station a few blocks away, then a shot of the train that brought us leaving to cross the middle span of the triple bridge.

We had a great weekend.

Thanks Scott for getting us started for this fine Memorial Day Weekend!

In remembrance of the multitude of men and women who have served in the U.S. military throughout our history and are now no longer with us, I'm showing photos of Freedom Park which exists on my layout.  Freedom Park is dedicated to my father, who served in the 1st U.S. Army Infantry Division ( Big Red One ) in WW2.  Dad landed with the First Divsion on Omaha Beach June 6, 1944 .. D Day.    He served with the Big Red One as they fought through France and into Germany.  When I visited Omaha Beach with Dad many years ago,  I picked up stones from the beach and took them home with me.  Once I began the scenery stage of building my layout, I knew I wanted to create a tribute to my father and used the stone as a sort of monument.

Additionally within Freedom Park is an authentic stone from the Berlin Wall which was given to me by a German friend who lived in Berlin when the wall came down.  This stone came with an Zertifikat of authenticity which is displayed in the top photo.

This Monday, Memorial Day I will sound Taps on my trumpet ( as will 5 of my students from their homes ) precisely at 3 p.m. from my front porch as part of Taps Across America.

Wishing everyone a safe and happy Memorial Day Weekend!

Did a redeaux on an MTH Santa Fe "Axy Dent" waycar...I never thought that Axy Dent thing was a good look even though it was prototypical.  This car was inspired by a Joe McMillan photo taken many years ago while riding on a Slaton-Seagraves turn road switcher.  Santa Fe did a spin-off of that branch line (year uncertain), and they might wish they had it back as it sees good traffic these days.  This waycar was radio equipped, thus the "R" as part of its number.  Don't roll your eyes too heavily at my homemade ground plane for the antenna, please.

It's too bad that conductor figure wasn't standing...He looks precisely like the guy in Joe's photo, and I would have repainted his shirt and put him on the rear platform. LOL
