Do some of the dealers generally run regular sales after the holidays?  I'd like to pick up one of these sets to play with 7 and 5 year old boys (with adult supervision), and would rather find the set at a well- discounted price if possible.

In this regard, I seem to recall that one of the forum sponsor features different sales at different times of the year, such as an annual Fastrak sale.  Thank you!

I decided to search comparative search websites on the DuckDuckGo search engine, and came up with an older article rating comparative shopping sites by Consumers Reports.  I tried the second highest rated comparison shopping site which was Google, and came up with a price of $275 delivered for Amazon Prime Members.  I'll take a look at the pricing at some of the Forum sponsors.

Dennis, Polar Express is, according to Jerry Calabrese, the best selling single train set in the entire history of Lionel. Whether you'd find the set after Christmas at a reduced price is in part a dealer and/or wholesaler decision. And in part also influenced by how many were made for this particular retail season, and the quantity remaining after Christmas in distributor/Lionel stock.

Usually it is the lesser popular sets that end up as blow outs or reduced prices. The NASCAR 2-4-2 starter sets and the Berkshire Major League Baseball sets come to mind. They were decent sets, just not that popular with buyers initially until the blow outs.

Right now Lionel direct has the Pet Shop and Dinosaur starter sets for $60, which is certainly a well discounted price. The other similar sets with real railroad names (Santa Fe, Pennsylvania) are nowhere near that price.

After discussing with my wife, we decided to pick up the two sets for $60.00 each.  The track alone has substantial value for the kid's layout I'm building.  Thanks for the excellent tip!!
