Hi All,

Hoping for some guidance, I'm somewhat familiar with fixing MTH stuff but this will be the first lionel item I'll need to fix.

Picked up a 6-28063 T1 duplex from an auction, it seems all the functions work except the smoke unit, the switch is on but the fan doesn't spin and the element doesn't get hot. Searching the forum some folks recommend checking the voltage regulator but I can't seem to find that in the diagrams.

Looking for any guidance on this, thanks!

Dan

These have a simple smoke unit usually driven directly from the R2LC. Smoke is likely continuous. Make sure the smoke switch is on. In TMCC press AUX1 9. If no joy, reprogram it using AUX1 74 for the feature code. If still nothing look for broken wires.

thanks! I'm running this in conventional and the smoke switch is on, anything else to test/check for conventional operation or do I need to get the base out to reset it?

You are going to have to get the base out and reset it. This is because feature codes- part of that reset- determines how the output for smoke works, and if the wrong code- it will never work in conventional or command modes. In other words, settings like this from command mode affect conventional mode too.

I tried using a Cab 2 to set it and no luck unfortunately, the smoke will come on but after shutting down the engine for more than 10 seconds it goes back to forgetting how to turn on the smoke (fan and element).

I did notice this is an R2LC C07 which is a bit odd since the support site says C08 is supposed to be in this engine. I have headlights though.

What I did is:

-Set engine to program

-Set Cab 2 to Steam and Cab 1 Remote

- Engine, 1, set (horn + sounds come on)

-Engine 1, aux1, 7 (horn - at this point smoke fan starts 50% of the time), 4 (horn - smoke fan turns off)

-Turn power off, wait 10 seconds, set engine to run

Smoke (both element and fan) work great, turn engine off, wait 10 seconds, turn it back on, its back to forgetting it has a smoke unit :/

I'm assuming there's something odd with the R2LC board? Either that or im not pressing the right buttons on the cab 2

The C07 board isn't a problem unless you upgrade to LED lighting.  The difference between the R2LC-C07 and C08 is the polarity of the lighting outputs in command mode.  The C07 has positive in respect to the frame and the C08 has negative in respect to the frame.  Other than that, they're functionally the same.

BTW, that a locomotive that certainly deserves a Super-Chuffer II  and a Chuff-Generator upgrade.

I found this beauty for 350 at an auction so there's definitely enough budget for them I'll reach out in March after I get through the next few shows. Want to make sure I have budget in case I stumble across the amtrak Empire service engine or anything VIA rail.

Do you know when you'll have the SCII back in stock?
