I really like the PRR Decapod.  I'm assuming that's an MTH mold?

Yes it is! and Dec'd out with whistle Steam too! I will have to research if the I1 had an air activated bell because the Lco is big enough for a swinging bell feature!

FYI Side note: there are TWO sets of PRR GLA Twin pack hoppers. One on the PRR dec set page and another on the hopper car page. Two different product numbers leads me to believe these add on's are not the same.

A lot of Lion Chief Bluetooth 5.0 Set offerings. Seven or eight by my count, with some decent variety. These must be big sellers.

I noticed that as well. The Lionchief line (not Plus) was chock full of options for the entry-level buyer which, I hope, indicates a healthy hobby. Lots for family's seasonal setups or those wanting the simplicity of limited remote control. Not for me, but good for the hobby methinks.

As a traditional-sized/semi-scale guy, the offerings are limited again. Not a complaint, I get it, we are a minority compared to Legacy/scale group on one end and the Lionchief toys on the other.

I will definitely be buying the Pacemaker Merchandise Operating Car.

Vision N8 seems kinda cool. I always liked the old TMCC Crewtalk cabooses. I like that they modeled the caboose whistle sound. Has that ever been done before?

Re: PRR Decapods - I always said if MTH put TMCC in their stuff I would have bought more of their engines new. I almost bought an MTH Dec a long time ago and I'm glad I waited. I might even retire my beloved 3rd Rails.

Lots of NYC stuff to contemplate.  I'm amazed at the diversity and volume of products, but I suppose as the only catalog now in existence that contains a full line of three rail trains and related track, power, etc., they have the market pretty much to themselves.  For the sake of the hobby and dealers, I hope they get lots of pre-orders.  This isn't the stagnant Lionel of the 1970s thank goodness, at least so far.

Dreyfuss or 3rd Rail H10 Mike? Can't do both - and I have 3 Dreyfii already.  If one has the GGD 1938 and 48 Century car sets, is their any compelling reason to buy the Lionel Century cars?  Doing them in 18" would have sold many cars, I suspect.  Too bad there's not a NYC NW-2.  Legacy reefer set prices are jolting.

My thoughts, also.

Despite the fact that many will note "nothing for me," this catalog literally has something for everyone. It's basically bookended by the higher offerings like the Dreyfuss and Big Boy on one end all the way down to the entry level, and in some cases, kid-themed cartoonish items. That leaves a ton of diverse product in between. Add in the various levels of train control and there's something for most budgets.

I may not order much myself but it's an impressive catalog.

I have a list of stuff I want, so here it is:

-Top of the list: the Base-3/Cab-3 App (I will definitely be getting this)

-Vision UP Big Boy #4014 Excursion Version (I entered the contest Lionel is doing, so hopefully I win)

Note: Does anyone know if the contest winner will be able to choose which engine they win? That would make sense in my opinion.

-UP Excursion Passenger Cars (at least the 4-pack and Station Sounds Diner) (if I win the Big Boy)

-ATSF Legacy GP20

-Maybe the BN or BNSF ES44AC

-Possibly some more scale freight cars

I know the prices are in some cases pretty astonishing.  I guess we just have to adjust to the reality that the size of the market is small, perhaps contracting and production costs are soaring due to inflation, increased wages in China and elsewhere.  I have to keep reminding myself that many folks are having trouble affording rent/food/medical care.  Difficult times. Thankfully, there are still some relatively more affordable choices in sets, rolling stock and locos for those who need or want them.  I realize this analysis will not make life any easier for anyone .

It's nice that you'll be able to get a set of matching passenger cars for the Dreyfus Hudson for those who can afford it, and scale sized too. Who's offering up a special run of CNJ RDCs? I'd still like to see them scale sized, but the features you get for under $400 makes it cheaper than adding the features to old ones...

If you want scale sized RDCs Sunset Models/3rail did make them in CNJ livery.

I'm relatively new to the hobby and was very excited about this catalog. I feel relief after reviewing it in the sense that there's nothing I have to have. I was worried I would "need" a bunch of stuff. Now I don't have to spend money that would get me in trouble... like $950 for four passenger cars. Honesty, I think my wife would flip if she knew how much these things cost. i don't think there would be anyway to justify it to her. Let's hope she never finds out. :-)

I am surprised there were no Vision auxiliary tenders to go with the Big Boys. Seems like a no brainer.

Can you elaborate on that thought? I'd like to know your thoughts on the water scoop effect....

It’s an ingenious effect on the Niagara and a great idea, but it never remotely looks like water being splashed about and scooped up to me; it looks like what it is: smoke coming out of the tender, even when I run it at high speeds.   Its a huge pain to fill the fluid reservoir and mine hasn’t worked in a while.  Since I never cared that much for the effect, I haven’t explored having it repaired.

Not much grabbed my attention this time.   The $$$$ for the Big Boy …. holy grounds for divorce Batman.  I’m glad I was able to pick up the Class A.   That was pushing it.

I’m not into passenger trains but the Dreyfus is beautiful.  The Penn GP20 is tempting, too.  I love the Erie Camelback.   Depending on the release dates, I might bite the bullet.

I still have a bunch of preorders out there ….. SD40T & dummy, FA-2 ABA, the Base 3, and a couple of the N6B cabin cars.

I like the Milwaukee Road scale milk car on page 59. And the Westmoreland hoppers on the previous page. But I’ll have to check on the preorder pricing before I pull the trigger. No motive power for me. Either too big for my layout or too expensive. I do regret however not ordering the PRR Mikado from the previous catalog. That probably was a mistake. I’m not a Camelback fan but that Lehigh Valley set is nice too.

I'm in for the PRR crew talk caboose.  I have the original TMCC version so an updated one with legacy was overdue.  I love the I1's but I got the PRR Mikado on order from the last catalog so I will pass.  In looking at the I1s, that boiler looks identical to the Mikados due out this year.  The only difference I am seeing is the extra driver wheel and no rear truck.  This catalog was huge.  I hope that means Lionel is expecting lots of sales.  As others have noted, prices are up, but I am seeing that with everything these days so I half expected this.  Looks like there is a lot to choose from.  I wish they had some new legacy operating accessories.

If the I1 could double head with my MTH I1, I would probably get it.  However, I don't think that will work so its a pass and I will continue to look for another MTH model.

The Vision Line N8 looks intersting, especially the electrocoupler. Not sure I can justify the cost when I already have the dumb MTH N8 plus an overflowing cabin track.  One can only use so many cabins.

While I don't need a grain door boxcar, the UP "Serves All The West" boxcar is correct to make into a Friendship Train car.  However, at $110 I think I will continue to look for a cheap Weaver model.

Everything else I already have, wrong road, too old or too new of a design, not scale, incorrect color scheme, or something I can get cheaper in the used market.

So, nothing in this catalog for me.

In this catalog, the two must-haves for me are the new Westmoreland Coal hopper 2-pack (markings mention my home town), and the Iron Hippo Legacy Set because it features the #4483 -- the only survivor of the class, but also the one I saw as a child when it was displayed in front of Westinghouse Air Brake in Wilmerding, PA.  When I was small, my mom & dad took us to see it, and I was in awe of its size (compared to li'l young me).  That is one of only two train-related memories I have with my mother (the other involving my first Lionel set at Christmas '74 -- our last Christmas before she passed).

I will be getting some other stuff, but I have to think on that stuff some more.

Andy
