Lionel Legacy GP-7 Sound Issue

I have a Lionel Legacy GP 7- PRR #8512, 6-28573 - I picked this up as a new/used piece which appeared to be never run.

At any rate, placed it on the track and immediately heard what sounded like feedback from the speaker, I went to program the locomotive and the sounds were like bad AM radio reception during a thunderstorm - snap, crackle, pops - sound would cut in and out - both on the Railsounds side and Signalsounds side when switched. Tried a hard reset, the issue continued.

Is this an indication of a bad sound board, sound driver or just a simple speaker issue? The loco runs great in Legacy, no issues with commands or smoke.

Any ideas or advice?

This is an engine with an older modular RailSounds board. My top suspect is reseating the sound board and RS power board, next is reseating the two PLCC chips on the sound board. You will NEED the PLCC Extraction Tool for the second step, do NOT try to pry the chips out with a screwdriver or similar tool.

Thanks! Pulling those PLCC chips is beyond my pay grade. I did open the loco prior to posting and looked at the boards. I didn't want to touch them until I go some responses here.

Those are the top suspects that I see for symptoms like this. This is a 14 year old locomotive, and the contacts on the connectors and PLCC chips develop oxidation and poor connections. Reseating them restores the connection and all is well.
