While you can spring for the Dallee units, you can find a lot of perfectly serviceable electronic reverse boards that folks have taken out for upgrades, and you'll save a ton of money over the price from Dallee for the same functionality.  I'm assuming from the picture of the E-Unit you posted, this is an engine with DC motors?  For AC motors, you need a different unit.

That is a QSI ACRU (AC current Reverse Unit.) If it is still functioning it will work fine for a postwar diesel.

Orange to the pick-up (s). Brown to ground chassis.  Green to the field lug on the brushplate. Blue and yellow to the brushes, order doesn't matter. If engine starts in reverse, reverse the blue / yellow wires. If you want to add a lock out on/off switch, you will need to remove the jumper wire on the bottom socket and insert tinned wires to the slide switch. I don't remember what pair of the three jumpered pair it is now, but a quick experiment will tell you which.

Thanks Chuck. I tried to wire up the ACRU to the engine according to your instruction. I get neutral and forward, but not reverse. When I swap the blue and yellow wire on the brushes, the engine will go in the opposite direction, but not the other. I'm guessing the reason someone gave me this for free is because it only works in one direction. Thanks for your advice. If I get another ACRU, I'll know how to install it. In the meantime, I'm going to rebuild the original post war e-unit.

It is fixable.  Sounds like the transistor is not energizing the one relay.   G
