Wow! I didn't see this one coming at all.  Having grown up in the aream this was my local excursion train.  I think it is so cool that Lionel is going to make this set, as it is today.  The engine and cars show up on all sorts of excursions in the SouthEast Pa area.

Mine is on order!  Who else is up for this?

I'm ordering it. I, too, was very surprised to see it. I bet the rail sounds are totally off. I went through them on a reading loco recently done by Lionel and the dispatch/engineer definitely had new york accents.

Count me in.  I'm about equidistant between Strasburg and New Hope, but regrettably have overlooked this shortline.  Have all the MTH Strasburg 64' Wood passenger cars.  Once COVID is past, will put New Hope & Ivy top of my to-do places to visit!

Choice of the GP-30 was easy, but hope Lionel does some eastern PA shortline steam!  Strasburg 475 or number 90, etc.  (NOT a Camel Back).

You mean the operator should have had an accent because New Yorkers dont have accents  Everybody else does.  I really hate when that happens  I purchased an MTH Staten Island 44 tonner and the guy had a Boston accent   Most other engines sound like the guys from Deliverance

Good thing Lionel is implementing the LVC and updated RailSounds on this set so you can do the recordings yourself and get a relatively accurate horn this time around.

MTH had the mic feature in DCS for years, so I’m glad Lionel is incorporating it in their system at last.

I think feature wise this set will be fine, but I just hope they’ll do the dark cranberry red paint color justice.

Has it been confirmed whether the voice streaming and recording is included with Legacy locomotives ?  Looking at the the new catalog notice only the new starter sets with Bluetooth 5 mention the new voice Streaming and Recording feature. All the Legacy locos have the LVC icon but not the Live Voice Streaming and Recording icon.

That is a good point.

Considering all LEGACY engines now have Bluetooth and (with the prices we pay for them) it’s being advertised in the O scale section, you’d think they would have this feature going in with the most up to date Bluetooth software installed.

Think @Dave Olson can chime in here on this?

Lionel measured 90's dimensions a few years back, implying that it is on their to-do list. Given that Strasburg is by far the well-known between the two short lines, I was surprised that Lionel did a New Hope set before Strasburg 90.

If you don't like Strasburg camel back

I saw this a few months back. While Strasburg own's the engine, I've only ever seen the real 972 in pieces. Just having the Strasburg name on an engine isn't enough to make me spend the money on it. I would choose the 8618 in the 2021 catalog over this engine, but would still rather save the money for something higher on my "wish-list".

That being said, I appreciate that Nicholas Smith has had custom run Strasburg products (from both Lionel and MTH) pretty consistently over the past 10+ years.

With so many classic color schemes that were worn by Fallen Flag railroads all across the U.S., I don't understand why some regional, short line, and tourist roads have to choose funky colors to paint their Diesel locomotives?  Some of them appear to be copied from the pages of some kid's coloring book where he or she went wild while trying out every color found in the 96 count box of Crayola (Reg.U.S.Pat.Off.) crayons.

Thank goodness the Strasberg Rail Road (and a host of others, including the NH&I) got it right from the Get Go!

Item: Union Pacific's tribute to The Katy on their heritage locomotive is completely out to lunch and the stale sandwich scheme proves it!  On the other hand, UP should get an A+ for the Mopac scheme, Eagle and all.  Fantastic!

The New Hope & Ivyland set is on the top of my preorder list too. I have ridden on the prototype many a time as well as just visiting. Hopefully when Lionel reruns their consolidations they will include a # 40 as a option (engine only) @dave olson

I would be in for the #40 if they do it.

This nice GP30 is equally impressive either long or short hood forward:

Many enjoyable hours were spent at the New Hope train station with my grandchildren when we lived in Washington Crossing PA! After watching the train leave the station, we sometimes walked down the street to Dunkin Donuts for a treat and by the time we finished and walked back up the hill to the station, we heard the horn off in the distance and waited for the train to return from it's trip through beautiful Bucks County! The train would return with the locomotive in front but backwards (i.e. long hood forward) as they had no way to turn it around. Same procedure when steam engine #40 was running. What an almost alive little beast that engine is, maybe as others stated above, Lionel may decorate a future locomotive like this:

Thanks for looking into this.  I'm glad the Lionel models are the right length.

Hey Tom,

I thought I'd let you in on the bridge over the Aquatong Creek near Mechanic St. A silent film was done, supposedly,  on the "Paulines Trestle" of the "Perils of Pauline"silent movie a long time ago. Yeah hard to believe! There was an actress named Pearl White that played Pauline in the silent movie. Of course, this is rumored and there seems to be not much proof of the claim. I think the name "Paulines Trestle" stuck as an attraction for the railroad, which back in the early years was the Reading. I worked there as a Fireman on #40 (great little consolidation), conductor on 2198 GP30, & 7087, which was scrapped just recently.

I worked on Paulines Trestle with the Foreman- Eric Hessler and three other guy's one day changing out ties that NEEDED replacing, especially after the NRA checked the trestle. It was a succeccful event given the fact that 25-30 ft. below was the creek with a lot of major sized rocks in the water. To this day I can't figure out how they got 614,Ross Rolands 4-8-4 C&O Greenbriar across that bridge to rebuild it years ago in the engine house. That trestle has a tight curve!

John, thank you for the info about ‘’Pauline”.  According to Wikipedia, she was born Pearl Fay White and does indeed appear in the film serial, The Perils of Pauline, in 1914.  Wikipedia also has a link to an hour and a half of the serial.  The opening credits state she is the star.  I intend to watch the whole thing hoping to get a glimpse of the trestle… too cool!

Really neat you had a chance to actually work on the trestle and to ‘play’ with #40.  I do remember the sharp curve.  I also thought about the questions a lot of folks here have about how sharp a radius the Lionel engine will negotiate.  The video JohnB sent shows curves on the actual railroad I thought were incredibly tight.  Really great for a train layout.

My sister did summer stock at The Buck’s County Playhouse several different years in the late ‘50s & early ‘60s.  New Hope had not yet ‘come to life’ back then.  My sister had an apartment on Mechanics St which is why I remember it.

Sorry to get homesick on you,

These New Hope videos keep popping up on my YouTube this one is from the 1980s. There are 4 scenes in the video with about 20 seconds of a black screen between each scene. Pay attention to the second scene where a young crewman exits the cab when the train stops........what the heck is he doing????? I have my guess but let me know what you think.

Hey John B,

Thanks for that video! I know both guy's in the cab of 40. The engineer is Frank Vopasek, who I fired for if our schedules met on the scheduled day. Frank & I keep in touch still since I'm in an "O" gauge Moduler group, The Raritan Valley Hi-Railers, with several other guy's. We started doing a Christmas show in Little Ferry N.J. and Frank  was Santa Clause. Of course it was pre Covid and the town Mayor wants us to come back when things get better. Frank is a great engineer of over 30 yrs. time. The other guy is Mike Muldowney, who is a great Fireman. Mike is a lot younger than myself and taught me the trade along with other guy's.

Really miss those days!

Tom,

They did not offer Consolidations in this catalog, they did offer GP30s so it was a natural choice to do the New Hope set using a diesel. I do think if this set sells well the next time they run Consolidations (the generic ones not PRR) a New Hope #40 will be one of them. They can even do the passenger cars in a 4 car set or 2 2car sets for separate sale.

@SGP posted:

It would be great to see a model of #40 someday. The recent "generic" consolidations used the same valve gear from Southern Pacific 2-8-0 which would be incorrect for #40. Hopefully if #40, or #60 in New Jersey, was ever offered it would have the correct valve gear for that locomotive.

SGP,

We are talking 3 rail O gauge trains so I would be happy with what I could get. Yes the same valve gear would be great but I don’t think Lionel or any other manufacturer would go through all of that work to sell maybe 500 to 1000 engines. I think with the correct headlight placement the SP Consolidation would make for a quite reasonable #40:

     http://catalogs.lionel.com/15c2/html5/

Not trying to start a debate or anything but here is another #40 video in the snow this time:

JohnB,

No worries. All modeling comes down to compromises. You make a good point, getting #40s front correct would be impressive enough. Lionel has made a PRR 2-8-0, maybe parts can be mixed and matched, I can hope. 3rd Rail made a 2-8-0 years ago that might be closer if anyone can find one at a good price.

Getting back to my original question about the upcoming SKU # 2122160, New Hope Ivyland set:  The engine is a GP30, and the 4 long coaches have Kinematic couplers, with an 054 curve stated minimum:

My oval includes mostly 054 curves.  However, there is one unique partial curve that has a single section of 031 curve, which is immediately preceded by 3 straight sections (one of which is the straight leg of an 022 switch), and immediately followed by 1 054 curve, 1 straight section, and 2 more 054 sections. (The train would never be sent through the 022 switch curved section).

When the front axle of the coach encounters the single 031 curve, the rear axle of that coach is still on a straight section. When two coupled coaches are on the 031, the other end of each coach would each be on a straight section.

Would the couplers rotate enough if only one part of the coach was on the 031?  Some coach designs  have an obstruction near one or both axles that could be problematic.  Would the Kinematic couplers extend enough so that the two coupled cars wouldn't hit each other when together on the 031 curve?

Unfortunately, there's no room to change out the 031 curve for an 054.

Thanks guys.

With all the concerns about whether this set will run on certain size curves along with concerns over the accuracy of its coaches,, MY CONCERN is if the folks with the concerns I mentioned didn't preorder this set and so Lionel will cancel it because there weren't enough pre-orders. I did preorder mine from Charless Ro who had a Great preorder price for it. Keeping my fingers crossed it will be made and we will see it in time for Christmas 2021.

my dream set

I actually mentioned how i would love to have this set on my youtube channel and if i did get it i would surely do a review for it

but sadly i can't afford or run this beauty on my tracks

they don't call me the "Penn Central of the west" for nothing

The New Hope is like the Shailene Woodley of railroads - just beautiful . i watch it on youtube all the time and would love to go in the winter and see them run in snow

maybe one day

Anyone know whether the set was canceled?  The Lionel store no longer lists a ship date.

My opinion is the set was shipped, as evidenced by separate shipments of the loco only and the second one of the set. The locos went out first, as evidenced by the one for sale at the NH&I gift shop. The set itself is likely in a container on the west coast, awaiting transport to dealers, in my case, Henning's. Eventually, I will get a phone call that it came in and I can pick it up. When? Who knows. The rule today: Patience is needed more than ever. Also, the government closed the Complaint Department due to lack of funding. Mark

Thank you for your insights Mark. I think you may be right. When Lionel did have the ship date listed, it was 11/10/2021. So, it's looking good for our sets.

I just didn't want to miss out on the GP-30 at the gift shop if someone could confirm a cancellation. Also, I don't mind waiting.

Wow! Thank you for that tip Rider! You may have filled a gap. There is a friend, Frank Vopasek, who was engineer of 40 for a lot of years. Once in a while, our schedules were the same day, and I, or even others, worked with him as fireman. Frank has retired from that engineers chair not long ago. He and I bought the NH&I sets the same day for obvious reasons and we're both anxious to get our sets. I would consider an add-on baggage car or combo car, but not another coach. Attached is a photo of CNJ operations at Jim Thorpe in 1967, which inspires me. Mark

NH&I doesn't have a combine, and the baggage car they currently on passenger trains is a lightweight car and doesn't match the rest of the former Reading heavyweight roster. Maybe we can get similar cars with clerestory roofs next.

It's been ten years since I shoveled my last coal shovel full of coal at NH&IR.R. and when I left, the open coach had been completed for awhile (can't remember the # but worked on it with others to fabricate, clean, paint, etc.) It came out pretty nice. 1430 was the parlor car, it was nicely done. It had a bar, snacks, with nice tables to sit at, paddle fans and was fitted with an air conditioner. The best part of working the trains was the pretty ladies on each trip. The best events were the weddings! Great looking wedding parties and occasionally  the Brides Father was a heavy tipper.                                                                                              I believe there was a baggage coach there (not sure of it now) and was used for the Santa Clause runs. There were so many riders (mostly children), that there were 2 Santa's stashed in baggage. One worked the north end of the train and the other worked the south end. The train consisted of 7 to 9 cars (including baggage), depending on ridership of the day. 40 was facing south (towards Lahaska) and 2198 faced north on the hind end towards New Hope). Didn't have to do the run around in Lahaska or New Hope. There was a caboose frame outside the engine house ten years ago (just frame & trucks) and it may be active now, not sure. Normally 40 only pulls 3 to 4 coaches during the autumn, spring, & summer. Great little R.R. to bring the kids to for the ride! By the way, the color looks pretty good to the full size coaches. I just found out what the # of the baggage car is 1096 & open car is # 1525 shortly after the post.

Now that the sets are out, what does everyone think?  I got mine.

A couple of early impressions -

  • I am very happy with the set, I am glad it was made.
  • I am probably going to add people to the cars.  This seems to be a common upgrade for this type of coach.
  • There seems to be a large difference between the engine and the cars - vertically.  Not a big deal and nothing to do about it, just something I noticed.

I anyone going for the extra car from the NH&I gift shop?  That seems to carry a huge premium.  Will any be in Lionels next catalog?

What else?

I am going to pick mine up this coming week.  As for the coach at the gift shop. It Is really hard to pull the trigger at $225.

My plan is to keep an eye on the stock amount and wait for a sale. If the stock starts getting low, I will buy one at full price to complete the set.

What color is the additional car (1127) from the NH&I gift shop?  The photos make it look green, but they are dark.

The tan interior is an interesting one. In this video review they all seem to be green. I pick up my set tomorrow and will let you know if it’s different.

My interior is green, my wife says I am color blind but it definitely looks green. I tried getting the shell off but had no luck. I wanted to add passengers but that project is for another day. Can someone take a picture and indicated what screws need to be removed? A video would be great but I don’t want to look too un-handy.

To all the curiosity seekers of the 1430 Parlor car and it's tan color: The cars interior was a beauty inside and if memory serves me right, I believe the tan color may have been to simulate the color of the walls within the coach (the walls were an oak color, I believe). Very warm looking inside with chairs & tables to sit in & have your favorite cocktail(s). Waitresses served the drinks & snacks & dinners for the later evening train. I remember the name Grapevine Express for the wine drinkers on board, usually on a Saturday evening. My wife and I rode the train on occasion and one of the perks was riding free since I worked there part time. I've been out of there for ten years so things change over time. There was an Irishman working the bar and he was always fun to be around, great jokes too! By the way, UPS should be bringing my set tomorrow (Wednesday) from Dixie Union Station - Thanks Rocky, the set will bring some fond memories!!! One more thing, if anyone has a consolidation 3rail that they want to sell, I'd like you to get in touch by my email in profile section, please. Want one as close to NH&I's 2-8-0 as possible for a customizing job.

I just finished putting passengers in my cars. The 3 coach cars had green interiors and the Parlor Car had a burgundy interior. I emailed Dave Olson this morning asking how to disassemble the car he said only the four body screws had to be taken out to get the cars apart. I had proceeded the job before receiving his reply so I removed the steps as well which made it a lot easier getting to the 4 body screws.

The Bachman figures seemed slightly larger than the Lionel and MTH figures so I restricted them to the restrooms and the restroom waiting seats instead of mixing them with the Lionel and MTH figures. Plus I had to cut off their legs. Sorry to say I didn’t take any pictures but I liked the results of how they turned out.

The only negative I could think of was the set did not include any instructions for the passenger cars only the GP30 engine. I did call Lionel Customer Service and a very nice young girl emailed me a operating manual but it was for the 21” cars which used a similar type of body screws. I also emailed Dave Olson who was very helpful with a diagram of the car. I would recommend that Lionel puts that diagram into their sets that has passenger cars without figures.

I've scanned this entire "Topic" looking for the suggestion that these cars be produced in CNJ colors.  Other than Reading and the roads to which they were distributed, the CNJ was the only company that owned and operated them.  It seems funny that a tourist line, albeit a RDG spinoff, should trump The Big Little Railroad.

I just became aware that these "Reading" cars are the actual arched roof type and are quite accurately scaled.  I missed the whole thing thanks to Lionel's photos, as reproduced in their online catalogs; all black roofs look the same to these old eyes unless I blow them waaay up.  They look to be wonderful cars and I'm now scouring the web for them with little success.  Buying the entire fleet with tax time looming is not an option.

If I've missed the CNJ suggestion by others, I apologize in advance for my negligence.

Henning's Trains still has at least one NH & Ivyland set...

John,

Thank you!  You're on top of things, as always.  However, after my latest experience with a Legacy GP30, now being studied by the nice folks at Lionel, I'm loathe to go for that set.  I spent many hours at the NH&I and knew the McHugh Bros. quite well.  They were quite helpful to us.  However, that is a competitor, no matter how remote, to my Mighty MIDH.

I may have found a source for some RDG cars which would satisfy my yen, for the moment. My hope (New Hope) is for a CNJ set with, dare I say it, a control cab car...

Following JohnB’s approach above, I ordered 2 sets of Lionel’s seated passengers. They arrived yesterday and I proceeded to try to install them. I removed the 4 body screws as shown on Dave Olson’s diagram that JohnB shows but nothing budges and I don’t want to break these beautiful (and delicate looking) passenger cars.

Any suggestions? I have 48 people waiting to be seated LOL!
