Lionel Reading Company 6-18006; reverse unit

Hi,

Recently I purchased from Trainz the Reading Company T-1. It worked as it should until I used the reverse handle on KW transformer. Since then it has stayed in neutral. I also tried it off of a ZW to no avail. In neutral it does as I would anticipate; headlamp lit; smoke coming out; and idling sounds. It was suggested that the wire that plugs in by the engineer is for the reversing unit. It was in there snugly and when I removed it the engine went dark. Reinstalled and the engine idled. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
