Lionel Tinplate 256 runs jerky

I purchased a Lionel tinplate 256 with Protosounds 2.0 and had to leave it to charge overnight to respond properly and even after the loco jerks in the reverse direction, especially at low speeds. Suggestions? It sometimes sounds like the 2 motor units inside at getting confused.

Tach reader spacing, cleanliness...but since only in reverse that sounds more like a gear/drive issue. Loose motor maybe. May want to pull motors and inspect gears and grease, then reinstall. G
