I have the Burlington Northern crane car and boom car which I regard as one of the most fun items ever made for command control in o gauge. I have two questions for other operators and owners of this car.

1. Did any of the variations come with metal trucks?

2. I am operating this unit on a layout with Ross Custom Switches that use the DZ 1000 switch machines. With the turn out in either position the crane car cannot pass since it gets caught on the screw head that holds the DZ 1000 to the ties. The section of the car that gets caught is the piece that drops down in the center of the frame between the two trucks. It also gets hung up on the metal spring that attaches the DZ 1000 to the control arm of the switch. So the only option for running it seems to be on a solid loop without switches.

Has anyone else run into this issue? If so, how have you modified things to move without catching?

Thanks

As far as I know, all TMCC crane and boom have diecast metal trucks.

In terms of the crane car catching the switch motor, you could try mounting the motor on the other side of the track, or possibly underneath the layout. If these options are not practical, the only other thing I can think of would be to replace the DZ1000 with the smaller and lower profile DZ2500 switch motor.

I had the same problem with the crane hitting the switch motor screw and spring.  I replaced the screw closest to the track with a flat head screw.  I carefully countersank the hole to allow the screw to be as low as possible.  I bent the spring at 90 degrees to allow for clearance.  Have had no problems with switch operation or the crane hitting anything since.
