Would these 2 locomotives a) be of a compatible technology vintage to lash up together successfully without fighting each other etc.  and b) be compatible from a real world perspective - eg. likely to have ever been seen together?

My guess with what I've read is that a) they are technologically compatible from a TMCC vintage and hardware perspective but b) not likely to have been seen together in the real world.

Very unlikely to be seen together, totally different uses.  Also, you'll at least have to disable Odyssey on the SD-90 to run with the RS-11 or they surely will fight.

Once you disable Odyssey on the SD-90, try running them together but not coupled.  Put them a couple feet apart and fire them up.  If they don't have significantly different speed curves, they'll probably do fine together.  If one is much faster than the other, they probably won't do well.

Even though the cover of both manuals indicate each engine has the Odyssey system?  The RS-11 I already own.  The SD-90 I don't, but downloaded the manual off the Lionel website.

The RS-11 is from around 2001 while the SD-90 is from around 2007.  The SD-90 manual mentions Railsounds 5 but the RS-11 just mentions Railsounds.  Neither manual shows anything about the Legacy remote, so they both predate the Legacy system it appears.

The owner of the SD-90 doesn't think it smokes, so it sounds like he never tried that.  It was part of a set and he's selling it off in pieces.  So if I can get it reasonably it might be a nice addition.  I only have 2 TMCC diesels and both are MoPac.  So a UP would go well with my interest and being a Lionmaster would deal with Christmas tree layout curves well.

Next question is about the smoke unit.   The original purchaser used a CAB1 with his layout.  He did indicate that he didn't know it had a smoke unit until I emailed him about it and pointed out the SMK-NO SMK switch he'd find on the bottom.  He indicated it was in the SMK position.  But he has already indicated he didn't think it had a smoke unit and never added any smoke fluid.  If the switch has always been in the SMK position, but he didn't activate the smoke unit from the remote, might the smoke unit still be functional?  If it isn't, how hard are they to replace?  (I've converted an older crane from wired control to TMCC with the crane commander but that's probably the limit of my abilities.)
