I have a Lionel C&O 2-10-4, #3004 (SKU: 6-28079); one of the marker lights on the rear of the tender is out (definitely out). I took it apart and it is a simple harness that could easily be replaced - two red LEDs and a connector (Lionel part number 6938056T35); unfortunately, this part is no longer available from Lionel. Can someone suggest a replacement; is it a generic LED common to other Lionel tenders? For instance, I found "Lionel 8079-330 Mikado Red Marker Lamp LEDs with Leads" on eBay. Looks similar, but who knows?

I purchased the suggested item from Lionel and installed it - no lights.  My simple approach to troubleshooting was to first check that there was voltage coming from the locomotive tender.  The only way I could easily hook a meter to the input to the LEDs was to cut the leads on the new wiring harness (the plug in the tender is male and difficult to access).  I hooked the DC meter to the leads and it pegged on "0" volts, i.e., wrong polarity.  I inspected the leads more carefully and found that the new harness reversed the polarity coming from the tender.  I connected the LEDs to a DC power supply and was gratified to see that they lighted.  I then soldered the LEDs back to their harness connector in opposite polarity, and all worked properly.  Not sure if the harness was constructed improperly or if Lionel changed their polarity convention on the locomotive for which this harness was intended.  Either way, I learned a key lesson:  before installing any constructed harness, I will check to see that it follows the convention on the existing plug (i.e., locomotive/tender).
