Erik,

 

I don't think people are hard on the other Erik.  Some ask questions and the replies are a mixture of condescension, insults, rudeness, etc.  I believe most of the animus was started when his wannabe entourage became so rude and judgmental.  A positive conversation would have been far more effective in creating warmer reception.

Agree!  I hope that he actually succeeds and even delivers a model that meets expectations, or is at least close enough to not get nit-picked to death.

Well said Jay.  I think everyone here is pulling for Erik, unfortunately the thread got off to a bad start. You're right Erik L., the prices European collectors/operators pay for their models is a lot higher and there are some stunning non-American prototype models being built for the European market. Closer to home, look at many of the non-railroad 1/32 scale models offered and sold by Fine Art Models here in the states. Absolutely stunning in detail. Museum quality for sure. So, there is a market for finely detailed and totally accurate models for sure in all gauges.

I ordered a scale 2 rail N&W 1776 with .115 wheels.  Now to find someone to make decals or dry transfers for the N&W 1776 caboose.  Oh to do a hopper and trailer.   Shell Scale has the stuff in HO and N but won't answer concerning O scale decals.

 

I hope Erik hits a homerun thus encouraging others to step up to the plate.

Don't you mean close enough to get nit-picked to death.  Who would ever nit-pick any US O stuff that MTH makes?  The list of things they get RIGHT would be a very short list.

The decals cost almost a C note but is worth it.

the Koreans look at the importers' websites, see the (necessary) mark-up, and then price their next project higher accordingly

I would think they would look just out of curiosity.  I would also think the Koreans are smart enough to figure out a "fair" price to charge so that sales are made down stream.

 

By not knowing the price, I can't believe folks are actually placing orders.

I join the chorus - I sincerely hope MMW and Erik are wildly successful.  Our hobby is advanced by the addition of these kinds of models.

 

Erik is aware of the risks - there are some.

 

I think the problems we have here are when folks make assertions they cannot back up with facts, and then get challenged.

I'm sure that anybody that is truly interested in this model has taken the unheard step (around here it seems anyway) of contacting the actual importer to find out the price. I"m sure there is a degree of faith involved as there isn't any track record yet, but I doubt it's truly blank check territory either.

 

The only people that don't yet know the price of these models within a small ballpark figure are those that aren't aware of their availability or those that don't care enough to contact the manufacturer and find out.

 

The distinction is between the public availability of pricing versus what can be obtained by asking the importer offline.

That might be a bit more difficult for him to model, as the fuel tank was very special for the Erie-Lackawanna (note how the tank wraps upwards on both sides, were the main reservoirs would normally be). I seem to recall that the under frame might even be a bit longer than a "stock" SD45-2 (maybe an SDP-45-2 under frame?). 

The models are F/P when MMW first announced the SD-45 project all variants were offered for reservation, at this point in time I believe all versions that have received enough deposited reservations are scheduled to be built,I guess with this newest proto paint scheme from NS there could be enough reservations to get this model built money[deposits] talks at this point.JMO

His website specifically lists that model!

Because no one could be bothered to ask Erik directly I will answer for him. From his website;

...

We will be able to take limited reservations, but only locomotives from the list below and the road numbers already selected and posted under the “Models” button on the menu bar are available from this point forward. Please email with any questions.

 

So, No.  Now how hard was that?  But, if people contact him directly and say they they want to reserve some minimum number of unit #1700s it might be possible.   But "what about" threads are a waste.

Hi HW,

you are right about the EL's SD45-2 unique configuration, however NS1700-1705 were all originally purchased by the EL as such. They later went on to become part of Conrail and then on to NS as 1700 - 1705 where they are still in active service.

 

I emailed Erik at MMW to ask if they will be able to offer the SD45-2 in this EL Heritage paint scheme and he stated yes they can given the road name specific details are already accurate for both EL and NS, and yes... they come factory painted.

 

NS1700 along with 1701 and 1702 were downgraded to EMD's 16 cylinder 645E3 3000hp prime mover. NS1703-1705, much to their crankshaft's delight, were also downgraded to 3000hp but still retain their 20 cylinder 645E3 prime movers.

 

My modeling interests are Santa Fe all the way but I have to say I really like all these Heritage paint schemes Norfolk Southern has been turning out! So come on BNSF, it's time to follow suit!
