Anyone know of a nice, modern layout in Central or Western PA?  I've been to Carnegie Science Center and the layout was very nice.  However; I'm a fan of the modern diesel and they had a lot of old freight on the layout.   I've also visited an O-scale club in the Altoona area.  I'm not really aware of any "open" layouts that I can visit on the western side of the state.   It would be nice if I could find a place that allows me to run my trains as well.    I have a 16x16 layout and would love to see my Premier diesels on a larger layout.

The D.A.R.E. Model Railroad Club in Venetia, Pa, south of Pittsburgh, has a moderately sized O gauge layout that runs using DCS. We are not open regularly, but we do have annual open houses. I can also arrange a special visit if you feel like stopping by. We don't really have a set era on the layout, but we do run modern power. Check out my Youtube channel to see if you want to stop by. Look for the videos with "West Penn" in the title.

I have some steam locomotives and a couple of F3 units.  Everyone once in a while I have a throwback day on my layout.  I also run steam under the Christmas tree.  Diesels don't look right under the tree!   However; I mainly like the modern diesels as I grew up with them.

I have less of a layout than you (trying to expand as funds permit) and I'm in Kansas, but it's good to see someone else with a modern diesel only layout. There are only a few of us here, but with you adding another, I think we are gainin' on 'em.

Thanks, Pittsburghrailfan.   I will check it out!  Hopefully, my post didn't come across that I'm anti-steam.  I just prefer modern diesels.  80% of my collection is modern.   I have a couple of old locomotives that my dad gave me.  It is nice to see them smoke up a room from time to time.

It always comes down to the train budget for me as well!  There's only so much to go around.  When it's time to buy I usually go with a modern diesel.   I bought the NS executive train from a poster on this site.  I like it a lot.

I am not anti-steam either, I just don't have any. I prefer modern diesels, but I have an RS-3 and a SW1500, maybe some F-units someday. I imagine I will probably end up with a steamer sooner or later. The Lion Chief Camelbacks are tempting, but the train budget is depleted.
