Our 80 year old friend in the club brought his Premiere Hiawatha to run today at our monthly open house. We didn't have the DCS system set up so were running conventionally with a Z4K. She started up fine but immediately I could hear her alternatively chuffing and then the squeal of the brakes again and again. I was about 30 feet from the locomotive at the transformer and didn't have a clear visual of it.

She would not run smoothly at all. Setting the voltage at about 13-14 volts she would move along for a foot or two then  drivers would speed up for a second then returning to the lower setting.

I'm guessing that the speed sensor has loosened or malfunctioned since last operation. IS this steamer a simple one to open up for inspection?

I really appreciate the advice suggested here fellas - Will forward this thread over to Ed and hopefully, he'll remember to bring the locomotive next week for a look-see.

It didn't cut out that I could tell, just would speed up momentarily and then back to normal. Am hoping its just reseating the plug. He has had it running on several occasions without incident...
