I just purchased a used mth j from 2008 and while the model is amazing, the whistle is not.  Are there any other sound files for this engine any one would recommend?

has any one upgraded the speaker to a lionel fat boy and  any difference?  What about insulating the tender or adding a card board tube to it?

thanks

Mike

Posting the catalog # would be helpful.

I'd have to disagree with what RickO suggests above.  It's not advised to use Railking sound files on Premier versions and vice-versa.  The term "sound file" itself is a misnomer, as it contains more than just the soundset.  The sound files also contain algorithms that account for model-specific attributes such as wheel diameters and feature sets, which you can be almost assured will have differences between the two; especially with steam engines since the wheel diameter of a Premier steamer will pretty much be larger than it's Railking counterpart.  As forum member Barry puts it, it's actually a "personality file."

So loading a sound file that's not meant for the specific product (such as Railking or Premier) can result in undesirable performance behaviors, biggest one that comes to mind is potential mismatched speed steps so that the engine may run too fast or too slow in relation to actual SMPH parameters.

Understood John, so then all of the "rave" over being able to download different sounds for PS2 rally doesnt apply. You can only download the "appropriate" sound for your  locomotive?

In the past folks have always made it sound as though "if you don't like the whistle your locomotive has, just download one you do". Does that mean you have find another premier j (from a different release) or does MTH offer alternate sound files that apply?

Actually yes, it does apply.  You can install any sound file you want and it'll run (exception is to make sure to make sure you're using the correct 3v or 5v version).  You could even install a diesel sound set into a steam engine and vice-versa.

It's just advised for optimum performance that you narrow your choice to one that's appropriate for your locomotive and it's related product line.

There are alternate sound files available.  How MTH offers them is by providing them online along with the corresponding catalog #.

The whistle on the real N&W J was not typically what one would expect on a big steam engine. The J's whistle has a relatively low frequency sound unique to the N&W. However, it is masculine as opposed to the wimpy non-masculine Banshee whistle of the PRR.

The whistle in my Imperial N&W J is right-on what the the J611 sounded like.

Not exactly true. Many railroads used the "deep steamboat" type of Hancock, step-top whistle. Some examples, such as SP "Daylights", Northern Pacific A Class 4-8-4s and Z Class articulateds, UP FEF 4-8-4s, Challengers, and 4000 Class 4-8-8-4s, Frisco, and MANY Southern Railway passenger locomotives, all carried "deep" sounding whistles.

I find that hard to believe as far as Lionel is concerned.

lionel is way off on there whistle on the bigboys and challengers.. MTH is alot closer..Go bug around watching youtube videos of them and you'll see..that why Im getting very bumb out about O gage...I'd tought by now Both would be on the ball in there sound systems..

I wish the electric railroad would offer a j class sound board. This wouldn't sound right in a J upgraded to tmcc. I was thinking about putting this in my Williams J with err cruise but the whistle just wouldn't sound right.

That was one of Lionel's worst RS4 generic sound sets on that Utube. There are better ones, but if you want the steamboat whistle you would need the GS-4 version. I have it in my K-Line GS-4 and the whistle sounds just like the 611 in that video. It used to be available but I'm afraid it was discontinued. We are limited to only 3 steam sound sets now.

These locos were just delivered. Mike Reagan has to get his, completely disassemble it, identify, name, photograph, list and price each part.

There should be a well detailed parts listing for these soon. Its generally a few weeks after a product is delivered that a parts list will become available.

Mike,

Here is the Link to the Premier N&W sound files.  You want to try one of the 2004 files.

The 2008 are all weak with the quillable Whistle feature.  MTH is actually modifying the sound file to improve it.  I will bing on them about it since it has been a while.  The QW feature requires a flash board, which your engine has.  I have modified older units with this board when the original fails.  Hopefully a better version will be available soon.   G

How many of you that watched the real video heard the echo of the whistle. Now that is something for the sound gurus to add!

As a matter of fact, I am in favor of dumping the crew talk to open up more space for an adjustable reverberation effect.

Lionel has had reverberation in their whistle soundsets since TMCC.

The new legacy j is a great example.
