A month ago I picked up a MTH DRGW stock car at a local train show. I am now just getting around to running it and the couplers are not cooperating. The couplers will not engage when pushed into another coupler. I have to physically close the coupler by hand and then couple with the other cars coupler open. This will hold if the car is at the back of the train. But if the car is at the front of the train with 4 or 5 cars behind it,  it can't take the weight and the coupler will spring open. Whenever I get a new car I graphite the crap out of the coupler mechanism and cycle it several times. I even tried to do it again but it's no help. Any ideas would be appreciated.

99% of the time this is the issue.

This two pics below shows the culprit. If there is too much play it can cause the coupler to open. Insure the mounting screw is tight and there is no play. or slightly bend the end below the claw slightly upward. This will put a little more pressure on the coupler and will keep it from moving around. Easy fix

Thanks Doug. I bent the part as you recommended and the coupler is now staying closed under a load. It seems though that this fix did not correct the coupling problem. It still won't couple when pushed against other cars. I have to still physically engage the coupler by hand. Does anyone have any ideas on how to fix this?

Was it closing on its own before the fix?
