MTH should paint a  decapod up in Strasburg Livery #90.

The MTH decapod model is NOT the standard Baldwin 2-10-0 type that Strasburge has. The MTH model is a "Russian Decapod", which is quite a bit different.

Along with a 4-8-0 N&W #475. Bet they would sell a lot.

Neither MTH nor Lionel has ever produced a scale 4-8-0. Only Sunset/3rd Rail has offered the N&W M Class 4-8-0 models, and did include the #475. And, you are correct in that those sold out quickly.

Several years ago I asked Mike Wolf about #90 as well.  He said they were considering painting up the 2-10-0 Decapod in Strasburg.  It's a shame they have those beautiful woodside coaches and nothing to pull them.  HotWater is correct, they are different.   I never realized how much until I put them side by side.

Have Fun!

As much as I want a Strasburg #90 I would not go for the MTH 2-10-0 dressed as #90. It needs to be a proper scale representation of #90 or its not worth the $999+ that these models are going for these days. I could understand doing this in the railking line but this is scale detailed premier we are talking about.

And when they shipped, the cab# you get is the luck of the draw. I ended up with #495. I really wanted 475.

Correct.

Strasburg #90 is essentially a Baldwin "catalog" 2-10-0, while the MTH model is of a 2-10-0 built for the Russian government railways that were embargoed because of the Russian Revolution and Americanized for US railroads.

Did you specify that you wanted #475 on your order to Sunset/3rd Rail? I'm sure Scott Mann would have shipped you the locomotive number that you ordered, had he known.

Just did a full TMCC/smoke upgrade on the #89 Mogul, sadly it's not mine and I have to give it back.

John, I have two of those Lionel #89 Moguls. I want to keep one in it's original NIB factory conventional condition but I'd like the other changed to TMCC. However my concern is about the original factory crew talk and other sounds if I have it upgraded to TMCC. Can the original sounds be kept or do they have to be changed? What did you do for the one you just upgraded? Can you post a video of it showcasing those upgrades? Also, what smoke upgrade(s) did you do to it? Add your Super Chuffer?

Besides responding here to my questions and concerns for every to see, would you please PM me THE cost and full info about you doing a TMCC/smoke upgrade for my #89 Mogul?

Thanks.

Sadly, the sound board in these is strictly conventional, so it has to be replaced.  John wanted the medium steam ERR board, so that's what he got.  Since the Cruise Commander doesn't fit in the locomotive, I used a Cruise Commander M, the original Mogul TMCC motherboard, and an R2LC.  I made the cables needed to connect it all together, and of course added the Super-Chuffer and rebuilt the smoke unit.  I also couldn't keep the wireless drawbar as the ERR RS Commander doesn't support that option, so I used Minatronics mini-cables for a tether.

Here's a video of the upgraded locomotive.

Send me an email if you want to talk about upgrades.

Was that #86 was originally a CN? I have that in TMCC from the factory. I have the #89 Strasburg from factory as conventional.

Since you have both Moguls to check for comparison, does it appear if the shells of both the engine and tender of those two moguls are interchangeable so that the CN tmcc ones could be swapped with the Strasburg 89 ones? Also, does the CN tmcc mogul have both crew talk similar to the conventional #89 Strasburg mogul and also cruise control?

Folks, the shell of the Strasburg and the CN are 100% compatible, I dropped the Strasburg shell on this tender without changing anything.  Obviously, I had to wire up the stuff like the backup light and volume pot.  AFAIK, the CN Mogul was identical in function as the Strasburg, it did have Odyssey and a smoke regulator.  Of course, that was burned out and had cooked the smoke unit resistor as well.

The Mogul in the video is mine--and I can't wait to run it. It turned out to be a real "Frankenstein" project. It started out as a Bethlehem Steel Mogul, which I bought on ebay for short money. Then, right after I bought it I found the CN #86 loco shell on ebay, and bought it.  At that point, I figured all I would need to do (other than sending it to Gunrunner so he could work his magic) is to swap out the loco shells, repaint the tender and have SRR decals made, and the end result would be a SRR Mogul,  except for the cab number, and I can live with 86 instead of 89. While working on the conversion, John called me to tell me he found a Lionel SRR shell, so I went for that instead of the repaint / decal route on the Bethlehem Steel tender shell. At some point I'll either change the loco to 89 or the tender to 86 so they match, but that's not a huge priority right now.

I really like the end result; until someone makes #90, this will be perfect. Thanks, John, for your efforts.

John
