Many of us have had the model train hoarding sickness for many years until one day you wake up and ask yourself what the heck am I doing with all this stuff?  While I continue to build and improve my layout, The train purchases have really been throttled back in the last two years. Buying is now very selective with the focus on layout artistry, realism, simple operation and high reliability. As for my wife, when it comes to my hobbies, she minds her business (as she should) . She's not my mother and I don't answer to her. She's supportive but if she objected it would not make the slightest bit of difference. I am not hurting anyone or breaking my marriage vows because of my hobbies.

Ha!  You said what many will deny!  It is hoarding and it is sickness by definition.  What I wonder about is the underlying cause.  How did we get to this point?

What, me worry?

Gotta do what i do with new shoes.. Hide them until they are not around!! and then take them out.. they will never know the difference shhh

"They?"  How many do you have?

hahahah More then you know!! hahah JK. I didnt mean it like that haha

I guess I'm lucky in two ways:

  1. My layout is small and I'm not a model train collector, only getting what I will likely be running on a very tightly-focused prototype
  2. I have a wife who really gets what's truly important to me and for the most part, indulges my purchases for the layout (for reason # 1)

Yeah, there are plenty of things I don't bother telling my wife, mostly trades and eBay sales/purchases, but not because I fear her wrath. It's more that I don't feel like explaining each thing and what it's for (as most of the time, she wouldn't get it) as I do collect WW2 and sci-fi costume/prop stuff.

In all honesty though, there reaches that area of capacity where you physically just cannot store them anywhere....

Thus the solution!

Mount them on the wall all over the basement and store the boxes in the attic....

I just doubled my capacity in one weekend.

J Daddy,

Where did you find those short wall brackets?

I blame all new purchases on my 2 year old grandson, and that greases the skids quite a bit.  I have no problem or conscience about acquiring more trains.  However, I recently bought a collection that was much larger than mine.   So it's kind of like drinking from a fire hose.  The only usable storage area was the train room floor and surface of the layout.  Now I can hardly get into the train area and I cannot run trains.  For the first time I realized I had way too many trains.  So now I am just going to keep some sets I bought while a dealer and some things I really like.  No point having trains if I can't see them or run them.

My Wife does not mind me buying trains, and I do not mind her buying expensive purses and shoes.

There are times when I over do it,but as I get older I realize that "Once In a Lifetime deal" happens over and over, but I still somehow believe  every once in awhile, you really will only have that one chance to buy only a select few train items at a bargain price, but that is the exception not the rule.

It was great fun learning about pricing and "RARE" piece deals as I progressed in this hobby. When armed with only a price guide,I used to think I was getting great deals on all of my purchases!!

I used to tell my wife,I'll never be able to buy this at this price again!!,only for her to show me a month later the same item,in better condition at a lower price!!

As for the post above about buying the shoes,I do notice things, but I married my wife to treat her as good as I can.

If the bills are paid, aren't we all here to enjoy ourselves??????

Things are bad enough in the 'Outside' world to have your own war going on about a train or a pair of shoes.

Buy your wife a pair of shoes, hand her some money and say,get your self something nice darling, pay for her salon appointment.

You'll end up happier if you do this, and there will be plenty of nights you will not want to be in the train room!!!!

That's all for now, there is a deal on a RARE postwar smoking caboose ending in 20 minutes I have to place a bid on!!!
