I am starting a new project to construct a petroleum barge. It will be based on the barges used on the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers. It will be 30 inches long and 10 inches wide. I am using styrene sheets between .020 and .040 inches thick.

Alan, looking forward to watching you build this project.

Alan what are the holes for?
I punched the holes out to use the circles on the deck for cable tie off points. They will be glued to 3/16 inch diameter pipes that will be about 1/4 inch tall.
Amazing to see how fast this is coming together.

Alan,
Great build, keep the photos coming.

Spectacular!!!!!
Peter
Looks just about ready to be launched down the slipway.
Alan,
Beautiful work and amazingly fast. Did you do any drawings, sketches or CAD before beginning or is this all just off the top of your head? If so, it would be interesting to see them. Did you order all the necessary styrene and plastic parts specifically for this project or do you maintain a large inventory of supplies?

Peter/Joe,
Thank you for the nice comments.
Mel,
You can see the sketch I used at the start of this thread. I also look at pictures of real barges. I found that river barges usually only have about a 12 foot draft. I will make additional sketches as I work on the model. In this case, I sketched out the sheet placement and how I would join corners. I also sketched the piping and walkway. I keep styrene and abs sheets in stock and order in a lot of the other parts.
Alan, amazing to see how fast you are able to build these wonderful projects.

You are one of the only modelers that couldn't benefit from a laser cutter or 3D laser printer.
I envy that!
Alan,
Once a caveman always a caveman.
The truth is I am too stubborn to take the time to learn how to use a laser or 3d cutter. I am stuck in my ways and get a real joy out of creating things on my own.
Thank you very much for such a nice compliment.
Alan,
Great job on the barge. BTW is there a reason why you built it full depth? Are you putting it on your layout or is this a mantle shelf model.
FWIW there is a barge repair yard about 20 miles from my house on the Sanitary and Ship Canal in Lemont Illinois. Often there are a number of barges out of the water on rails in various states of repair. Also a river tow boat is up on the rails.
Bill,
The barge is for a customer and the height of the barge was based on his existing dock height.

Great job and amazing work.
Hmm. I've got an 8' wide Ohio River that would be perfect for that barge!!
Nice work, Alan!!!

The details are fabulous.
Alan, thanks for taking us along on your "barge trip." Fantastic work.
Tom
Looks great! Are you going to test its seaworthiness on that water outside your shop window?
Great build.
