Frequently during the many discussions of New York Central Hudsons the subject of which are scale size and which are not comes up. Here are a couple of line drawings taken from Staufer's Book "Thoroughbreds". Now you can measure your own engines and come to your own conclusions.

I've taken a few measurements of the Lionel Vision Hudson and found it slightly oversize. The length is within a few inches but its 6" taller at the stack and about 4 inches wider at the cab. I hope to get a chance to take a few measurements of the K-Line Hudson soon.

It is Sam. I have started to detail the Vision Hudson. The builders plates are from Precision Scale. The dates are wrong but they will have to do for now. Also to avoid completely voiding the warranty I did not remove the shell so the plates were applied over the existing cast on "plates". Maybe after the warranty runs out I'll mill off those castings. Also added the lift chain and locking bar for the front coupler. I had ordered 10 links/inch chain from Precision Scale but that was either lost from the order or out of stock so I made my own from .012" brass wire.

Hmmm...

ALL 3 rail drivers have undersize treads. Unless the drivers are Proto 48 they will all be undersize. Undersize drivers are going to effect height measurements assuming you use the top of the rail as a reference. If a 3 rail engine exceeds the height measurements posted above then it is way oversize. It should actually measure slightly shorter due to the undersize treads.

I'm pleased with my Vision Hudson.  When I look at photos of the prototype, it looks close enough to me, and a few inches here and there don't matter to me.  Six inches - 1/8 inch.  Literally, not a big deal. 

 

Happy as I am with the Lionel product, I am not a fan of Hudsons, even the J1 and J3.  I bought mine because the Hudson, along with the warbonnet F3, is the most iconic toy train loco ever and I felt I had to have one in my collection.  I seldom run it except to show friends the swinging bell, which is fantastic.   I prefer bigger more powerful locos like some of the big Pacifics and Mohawks and parfticularly the big ATSF Northerns and the Challengers, etc.
