Apparently I posted in the wrong forum earlier. So this is a repost here. My layout is O27 K-line, Lionel, and MTH.

My O27 K-line switcher and K-Line steam stall or reverse on Lionel O27 turnouts. Basically it’s the similar to the problems I had 2 years ago (“K-Line switcher stalls on o42 turnouts”) , and several  OGR members gave advice. After cleaning all track, wheels, and pickups I was able to run the trains faster than a crawl ok.

Now I would like to solve this problem once and for all if possible. Started researching it again and found RailfanRon’s blog on “Steamer stalls on turnout” :

“Make sure the readings you're getting aren't on the common rails in the middle of the switch. Those rails are supposed to be dead. When the engine crosses them the middle rail pickup roller crosses them and if they were connected to the common the locomotive would short out when the roller crossed them. You should have voltage from ALL middle rails to ALL OUTSIDE rails on the switch. The 2 outside rails in the middle of the switch will not be hooked to the common.”

So I set up a voltage test as follows:

  1. Note: The locos run perfect on all track sections.
  2. no rolling stock on the tracks
  3. ZW 275 set at 10VAC
  4. VOM reading on turnout outer rail and middle rail: 9.5v
  5. Outer rail and inside rail: 9.5v
  6. Inside rail and middle rail has 0.0v

Does this make sense or do I have a wiring problem? Any advice would be appreciated!1. outer rail and middle rail has voltage2. outer rail and inside rail has voltage3. inside rail and middle rail has NO voltageK-Line SteamerK-Line switcher

Two things...
-Run a jumper between the switches as shown in black to help with continuity of the common through the junction where you have 3 fiber pins.
-Check to see if the fiber pin circled in red is needed there as this dictates that all center rail power must come through the base of the switch from the right side track out of view in the picture.

Got it! multiple issues. I modified the switcher 2 years ago. Today I tried to rig up a lighted caboose to pull behind the switcher, passing a wire from the roller on the caboose to the switcher and almost blew the whole **** thing! I cut the wire off. But in the process I resoldered the wire bundle on the switcher. Put it on the track and voila, it crawls through the O27 switches. So I also cleaned the rollers of the switcher and steamer by spraying them with MAP sensor and blowing dry with compressed air. Both locos now crawl! Tomorrow I will take a video of my humble 13x6 layout and post it. Thanks Rob and Dan!
