I just got my hands on an older 2 rail MTH Daylight runs on straight DC power. I don't know the exact model number. The engine arrived without a box. The seller had packed it well. Someone had removed the draw bar. Trouble was it did not go into a threaded hole but had a nut and washer on the inside that was now missing. Repaired that and put her on the rails.

She wouldn't run forward well at all. She ran backwards perfectly. I guessed she had some type of drivetrain bind. I oiled up the side rods and axles. Better but still bad. She would draw excessive amps every time she stalled or slowed down. That happened every few inches. The MTH fan driven smoke unit was switched off. I lifted the engine off the rails slightly and she ran fine. She needs more power pick up points. I will add them.

I removed the shell and the drivetrain and running gear cycled smoothly. I left the front lead truck off, and she ran perfectly. I isolated the issue in the front truck. Time for bed so I'll look at her again soon. I had this happen with an old MTH Allegheny.  I knew this could be an issue.

This engine will be upgraded to command so testing first is a must! I will post more as I go.

Edit!! This engine came from this forum. It arrived in mint condition and I am so happy with the great deal! These things just take some effort to be brought up to current standards. I thought I'd share that here.

Wow! a new one for me.

The factory installed the wheel sets backwards on the lead truck. They are only insulated on one side. I kept looking for arcing spots then I noticed this. My meter confirmed it. So I reversed the wheels and that's fixed.

Next, the engine derails on one curved spot on my RR. It seems it needs one axle to be blind. Worse, the tender keeps picking the switch right after that turn. So my work is not done yet. One step forward, two steps back.
