Leave the open space and maybe make it a community park with a few picnic tables and a few charcoal grills. Snake a path around the area for kids to ride their bikes. Maybe have a small pavilion for family gatherings.

Take jdevleerjr's suggestion add trees. You've got the lumberjacks so make it like a little logging operation. More trees, some already felled a dirt road, a pick-up truck or two. Maybe a tractor pulling logs or stumps. It keeps the uncluttered feel and doesen't uncluttered the wallet too much.
