Very new to legacy and quite honestly things i have been reading here about conventional and legacy mixed control have just been confusing me further.

 

my proposed setup is this... 2 Track layout, completely isolated tracks not connected to one another at all. Outside loop for Legacy, Inside loop for Conventional (post war, etc)

 

Legacy 990 Command Base

Lionel ZW-C (2x 180w powerhouses) (addressed as track 1-4)

 

As i understand it since this is a command transformer i don't need anything else?  How would it work? have both handles always at 18V and control legacy on "track 1" with cab 2 and conventional on "track 4" (or however the ZW addresses it)

 

would this setup give me full legacy control and throttle/bell/whistle/direction on the conventional track?

 

is there a better way? i don't care about transformer control at all and would prefer to do everything from the cab2 as i do not like standing/sitting in one place.

 

Sorry i tried searching through Legacy/Conventional threads but my head is spinning with 1000's of options

That is about as good as it gets.  Be warned however, if you try to run a TMCC or Legacy engine on your "conventional loop" in conventional mode it will not respond as such.  It will always see the command signal.

 

Basically what you really have is 2 command loops.  You are just choosing to run one conventionally by varying the output to the track via the CAB2/transformer and control conventional engines.

The ZW-C will do what you want to do fine. In command mode when addressed the a and d handles start at zero and increase the voltage as the red knob is turned. The b and c handles are different. They start at the maximum or whatever you set the handles at and can be decreased with the knob. The middle handles work nicely for accessories OR Command Controlled Engines as you address the track and hit boost or spin the knob a little and the track comes up to full voltage. Conventional engines on the a and d handle also work great because the voltage starts at a little above zero and increase with the knob up to the handle setting.
