Yesterday I received my re-tooled Polar Express scale Observation Car that Keith fabricated to be in conformity with the one shown in the movie. The rear end was totally redone, rounded roof, new enlarged tail light, rear entry doors are new, and new railing with a larger drumhead. You probably remember him posting photos of this project last year. The result is simply beautiful.

Keith came up with the idea for the PE RPO car and his recent efforts of painting engines, tenders and his TW Design bridge are of high quality. He us without a doubt one of the most clever people we have on the Forum. Thanks for all of your good work, Keith.

Guys, I promise photos tonight when I get out to the layout. This car is unbelievable in terms of quality and appearance. I am sure glad to be one of Keith's many friends on the Forum and he was good enough to do this car for me. I am privileged to have one that closely mimics the one in the movie.
Sorry I'm late to the party. Thanks for posting, Brian.
You are all very kind. Thanks for the nice comments about me, this car, and other projects...I very much appreciate it.

Me and Brian both have a shared passion for the Polar Express. Brian is the reason I did my car in the first place. He suggested the book "The Art of the Polar Express" to me. There is a page showing an all white card stock model of the observation car. The more I looked at the model, the more I wanted to change mine.

As soon as he noticed me working on my observation car, he wanted one too and asked if I would do one for him. I was hesitant at first because I had never done a customization like this before and never thought I would do one for someone else. In emails exchanged between me and Brian, he expressed that he liked Lionel's PE Observation car but wished it was closer to the movie car. Brian was cheering me on though my car's progress. After I finished mine, I decided to modify Brian's car. I started his at the end of April and finished recently. Once the paint cured, I was able to assemble the car and send it off to him.

This car is still not exactly like that in the Polar Express movie. Given what I started with it is much closer. Lionel gave their interpretation of the PE obs car and this is my interpretation. There had to be give and take, but I am happy with the results. The important thing to me was to shape the roof correctly and extend the observation deck...and put in the three deck lights.

I enjoyed doing this car for Brian and am very glad that he liked it. I am honored to have my creation sitting on his beautiful layout.

Thanks
Keith reminded me in his post about the book, the Art of the Polar Express. If you are a PE fan, this is a must have book.

His project with my car was fascinating to watch as he finished each step along the way. I am very anxious to put this train in the correct setting in a North Pole layout.
Thank you all very much!

Keith,
Do you have any pics of before and after or side by side views. Are any of your projects with step by step on the forum or youtube.Car looks great.

Mark Sr

Mark, yes...when Brian's car arrived I was able to compare them and take a few photos of them together. I have a side by side of my completed car next to Brian's car as delivered by Lionel...

In this view, I tried to show how my modified car gained length over the coupler. Actual shell gained 3/4" or three scale feet.

Oops I forget to add the photo. Here it is:

Sorry I didn't answer this part of your comment earlier. I don't have a step by step how-to but I do have plenty of photos from when I did my car. I do eventually want to take some time and right up a how-to and keep it on John's site, J&C Studios O Scale Archive.
Here is a link to a PhotoBucket album that shows the progression of my car from last year. If you have any questions, I'll be glad to answer them.

Will do a new one with the added cars, this November.
Here is the video of it from Last year. I had just received the video camera and didn't do a good job editing the footage...
Polar Express Christmas 2010

I wasn't happy with the white on the sides of the milk car and have since repainted it.
