I saved some photos (previously posted on OGR forum) in which a 3 LED segment from an LED reel were wired individually and separated to light the two red side lights and clear taillight of a 15" Lionel observation car and tried to replicate the technique. I failed. (IIRC correctly, the saved photos were posted by Stan2004.) Also, I'm using a @gunrunnerjohn roll your own regulator.

Granted, my 76 year old hands are no longer as steady as they once were, and the soldering is sloppy, but from the photo of my failed effort am I attempting to do this correctly? If so, I'll try again and hope for better results with my soldering. But, if it's not the right approach, where am I going wrong?

My failed attempt:

LED Failure

What I'm trying to replicate:

Obs car LED 1

Obs car Led 2

What it's for:

NP NCL Obs LED

The observation card would have been done months ago, but for enhancing the lighting above and a Tomar Industries NP NCL drumhead which is also in process finally.

Thanks for any help. If you prefer, send email advice/suggestions to my email address in my profile.

Took @gunrunnerjohn advice and wired 3 separate LEDs in series as shown below.

Question: what adhesive should be used to attach the LEDs to the lenses? Can the adhesive be applied to the LED itself so it can be placed directly on the taillight lens?

Also, is light scatter a concern for this installation? If so, how is it avoided?

Any other suggestions/advice?

Carl- I use a hot glue gun to set LED's to the lenses. As John said CA glue works well too.

For light leak, get a can of liquid tape and paint the backs of the LED's if necessary.
