Here are a few 'Shelf Passenger Trains" for you from my basement.

On the top shelf  we have the Illinois Central 'City of New Orleans' with 6 K-Line 72' cars behind Lionel IC F3's ABA.  

The UP is shown with Lionel F3s and PA's with 10 aluminum K-Line cars.

A favorite is the "North Coast Limited" K-Line F3s with K-Line and Weaver aluminum cars.

The Canadian Pacific has the Lionel PW Scale No 2373/74 CP F3s ABBA with 7 K-Line 72' aluminum cars

NYC makes a brief appearance with early MTH scale F3 and a RPO car visible

B&O is represented here with Lionel F3s ABBA and B&O RF-16 'Sharks' pulling a variety of cars - heavyweight and aluminum by K-Line, MTH, and GGD.

Passenger Train

Here is my Southern Pacific passenger train with a few Harriman SP cars.

Acela, CSX Executive Office Train, NYC passenger trains on the SOUTH FORK RAILROAD.

Baggage car for the TEXAS ZEPHYR, Fort Worth & Denver Rwy. Silver Peak

The FW&D was ballasted with dusty red and black volcanic rock from Capulin, NM so a moderate layer of grimy, dusty weathering was added mostly to the skirting.

You might recognize this as an Atlas CZ baggage car which I relettered for the Texas Zephyr.  In addition to this car, I am doing the same to a streamlined RPO, 3 coaches and two observation cars.  I already have finished a former troop car which FW&D used as a baggage/express car.  I also have two Atlas CZ sleeping cars which will be redone into TZ lettering.  All of this will make a fairly accurate Texas Zephyr, circa 1964.

Only a bonafide CB&Q person will recognize the variations and liberties taken to make the consist of a TZ.

Thank you, Wood and yes it does. I remember when I was about 5 or 6, the UP used a GP9 and GP9B to pull the Yellowstone Special. Then about 1957, it used the F3A and F3B until it was discontinued to West Yellowstone.

The RPO for the TEXAS ZEPHYR rolled out of the shop tonight; FW&D Silver Messenger. It had a sister car, Colorado & Southern RPO Silver Tidings.
Being a headend car, I made it sooty and in need of a wash rack.  The most disappointing feature of this model is the anemic diaphragm…it puzzles me how Lionel, Atlas, or MTH can run circles around Sunset models regarding this one simple feature?  Anyway, it is easily replaced.

Awesome. Don't often see 15 car passenger trains on layouts. Also unusual to see double headed Hudsons.  Don't recall the NYC often running Hudson double headers.

I agree with Lew. A pretty long heavyweight passenger car train with double-headed NYC Hudsons? First time I've seen that and it makes an mpressive train. On our layouts, we're the bosses, so we can do whatever we want. Nice video.

I had the equipment,,,,so why not?

Rob, impressive! I really like your Texas Zephyr passenger cars with the weathering. What did you use to re-letter the cars with Texas Zephyr? I ask because I'm relabeling 2 New York Central Dinners and one Empire State Passenger Coach K-Line aluminum 15" to California Zephyr. I'm using silver foil heavy stock adhesive back Inkjet stock for my cars. I was able to get the exact font from Daniel Dawdy at The Model Railroad Resource. LLC. Hopefully I can find the time this weekend to get it done. I'll post some before and after photos.

The lettering for most of the cars being redone comes from K4 decals.  Their products are high quality, and the selection is extensive.  After having purchased a ZEPHYR font, creating a decal set on MS Publisher, and buying and printing waterslide decal paper, K4 came out with a Zephyr set far superior to mine.

Beautiful train, Sam. Question… it looks like you have glass insulators along the edge of the layout with wire running on them. I assume they aren’t live - what are they for???

Hi Paul. They are old telephone pole insulators that we came across some years ago at a garage sale - bought the whole box!  We ran a string of small LED lights  along the edge of the layout with several warning signs that read "DANGER - HIGH VOLTAGE".   You can see lights if you look carefully.

It seems to work as we've had very few 'incidents' of kids grabbing the trains.

A newer passenger train on my layout.  We took our kids on an Amtract trip years ago which has so many memories for us

My first and only passenger train.  I bought the dining car before I was gifted the Amtrak set by my neighbor (for taking care of his 119 lb. golden retriever).  The SUV is built on an HO diesel switcher's chassis.

I like that SUV operation sir.   First time I've ever seen something done this way on a layout.   NICE                        Is it automatically stopping and going through the gate in unison with the train's operation ?     Whatever the case , it's a pretty darn cool thing to watch.

The operation is automatic and I use High Frequency AC to keep the headlights illuminated when the DC to the HO rails is cut by a relay and reed switch circuit.  However, if I were to do it again, I would use modified slot cars like I have done here:

And the incandescent headlights stay illuminated here by just reversing slot car tack polarity with a diode on the motor.  I wouldn't need to run these in reverse.

OGR published my diecast SUV "how-to" project article in run 172, back in April of 2000.

Hey Randy. It was scratch built but not by me. TWTrainworx built this as a prototype and ultimately built a few more. This was one of the original ones I bought 5 years ago. Hope that helps.
