Denny,

Radio Shack is not out of business, but has indeed closed most of its stores.  It has migrated to a mostly-online business model.

It still has a nice assortment of scanners however.  You'll just have to shop online, or call in your order, instead of visiting the local store.

I found one about fifty miles from me. Maybe I'll drive there the one here in town closed.

Hi Denny & Members

Sorry to hear that you do not like scanners because the frequencies in your area do not meet your objectives and Radio Shack Scanners do a better job. Please re-read my overview and watch this video from the number one rail-fanning channel on YouTube. He shows what this scanner can do.

1 Radio

{1} The Uniden Scanner & BingFu Antenna

2 Computer

{2} This scanner can be program my by hand using the keypad on the scanner. I did a few channels this way but the process is too slow. A faster method is to use a PC computer, this will not work on a Mac. Use https://www.radioreference.com/ and https://www.bearcatwarehouse.com/ You must set up an account with Uniden / Bearcat. The scanner comes with a USB cable that is used to program the scanner & charging the 2300 mAh - (2AA) NiMH batteries.

3 Antenna

{3} This is a roof mounted BingFu Antenna with a magnetic base.

4 Tag

{4} During the programing process a Alpha Tag is assigned to each channel. This is showing the Amtrak Police & Channel 160.3650

https://youtu.be/VXDYgbQehv4

There is NO EASY BUTTON for scanners but a learning curve that is worth the time to get great results when we are out rail-fanning, Plus it also has a 24/7 weather channel. All for about one hundred dollars.

Take care & Happy New Year: Gary 🚂

I thought I'd post this here, there are some photos in the article that are pretty amazing. Back in June the Lava fire in Northern California at the foot of Mount Shasta, burned the Dry Canyon bridge cutting off UP's root from Portland, Oregon to Roseville, CA, but UP repaired it in record time. Here's a link to the article on UP's website.

Wow, Erik’s outstanding photography work is such a tough act to follow.  Magnificent as always!

Here are some iPhone photos and videos I grabbed this week along the Providence & Worcester Railroad (now a member of the Genesee & Wyoming family).  We haven’t seen the sun here in eastern MA for what seems like a week.  I suppose the gloominess is somewhat appropriate when your photographing a railroad going about its daily routine in its dirty, cramped-quartered, city yard environment!

During the first eight or so years I went trackside in Pittsburgh, by force of habit I largely stuck to NS's Fort Wayne Line,  and neglected trips further afield. Now that my time as a resident is coming to a close, and now that I have a little more free time, I have been making efforts to hit up lesser-known lines that give the region its unique flavor.

4F4E3BE7-0427-41EF-ABB4-494653A033DF_1_201_a

A lot of folks probably heard about the Cumberland Mine Railroad for the first time when it was featured on the cover of Trains last year. I heard about the line through Instagram a few months prior, but never found the time to check out the route until last week. Here, the westbound run charges toward the short twin tunnels under Polecat Hollow Road and I-79.

C41CF41B-914D-44E2-9843-789579CDB252_1_201_a

The Cumberland is one of two roads in the Pittsburgh area that currently roster SD38-2s, a type that is slowly becoming less and less common as Class Is auction off more surplus SD40-2s. Number 22 shows off its model railroaders' dream light package (Mars light, class lights, beacon, and ditch lights) at the barge loading facility in Alicia. I received permission and signed a waiver to visit the property for the day.

9089D6BA-F69E-4694-A04C-60844F6EA355_1_201_a

The other SD38-2, number 1, drags the unit train past the mine tipple loader. Number 1 was built new for the Cumberland Mine, unlike 22, which was originally built for Yankeestown Dock. The road also rosters an ex-Southern Pacific SD40R, held as reserve power because of mechanical issues.

CF5461E9-5545-4BB5-B9EF-7433DFA9338A_1_201_a

Trains almost always run with units on both ends, with one loco running long-hood forward up to the mine and the other leading short hood-forward to the transload. Assuming no mechanical issues at either facility or with the train, the road usually runs one train for each shift. Number 1 is seen preparing to depart for its return to the mine after emptying the afternoon's load.

991A4FD5-A569-41AF-9604-0B1AF0E4526F_1_201_a

The other road rostering SD38s (for now) is the Bessemer and Lake Erie, which, seventeen years after the Canadian National takeover, still rosters a rotating cast of the 2000-horsepower units for the sporadic miscellaneous run. Here, ex-DM&IR SD38 862 leads a late misc. underneath the signal bridge at Russelton. Not shown are about seven local and out-of-state railfans (one guy in my car came from New Jersey), all in their teens and twenties, who charged up the embankment to form a photo line.

8F2B8570-42CE-4030-BEC0-B9193AB8B462_1_201_a

Currently the only unit on the property still in Bessemer paint, SD38-2 868 pauses at Harmar while the crew resets the switch to the mainline and prepares to reverse across the Allegheny River to clear the block. SD40T-3 905, an ex-SP tunnel motor, is offline for repairs. Usually, the train switches  Bennett Supply before heading to the North Bessemer yard to pick up meager carload interchange with the Union Railroad, but on this day, in addition to being late, the crew ran back north to the shops at Greenville instead.

Rail-fanning with B&W Film

From my stock files, April 2003, Detroit, Michigan • Home Darkroom

1 Test Pront copy

{1} The first step is to make a test print. This process will determine the correct exposure time for the enlarger. A 8X loupe is used to check the grain structure and contrast. 25 seconds is the correct exposure for this print.

2 Foucus & Exposure copy

{2} Using a Beseler 23CII Condenser Enlarger to make the print. The negative is in the negative carrier and light will travel through the negative a cast an image onto the photo paper. I use a #4 contrast filter to give the print a high contrast finish.

3 Dektal 3 copy

{3} I use Kodak Polycontrast RC Paper and develop the print in Kodak Dektal for one minute.

4 Stop Bath

{4} The print is now in the stop bath. This will take about 30 seconds to stop the developing process.

5 Fixer

{5} The fixer will harden the emulsion so it is no longer sensitive to light.

6 Wash

{6} The print will be washed in running water to remove all the chemicals.

7 Squeege Dry 3 copy

{7} The print will be squeegee dry to remove water spots.

8 Dry copy

{8} Hang up to dry.

9 Schaefer tower v2

{9} Final full frame print. Schaefer Switch Tower.

Hopefully you found this helpful & interesting.

Thanks for braving the frosty chill Gary (and Pam)!

So nice to see 4930 still in her Grand Trunk colors.  Not that I don't appreciate CN, and the continued good work they do on the ex-GTW here in SE Michigan, but a little reminder of the past is always a good thing.

Mike

Hi Mike: Thanks for checking out our photos from the CN Yard in Pontiac, Michigan and the very kind comment. Below is one more photo of the GT 4930.

Going Loco in the South Pacific:

I first met Tim, a person whom I consider to be the ultimate railfan, in the early 2000’s while visiting our son who lives in the Cook Islands. How our son ended up there is another story but for simplicity, we'll credit the Peace Corp.   Tim, a gentleman lawyer on the Island of Rarotonga, purchased a 20 ton Polish 0-8-0 narrow gauge steam engine and had it shipped 15,000 miles to this tiny island with a land surface area of approximately 25 square miles.   In February of 1992, the #1741 was off loaded onto the Avatiu Wharf.    For the next 10+ years, Tim in his spare time and almost single handedly, restored this machine and gave it life again.    The boiler of the engine was found to be in excellent condition but in order to be fully inspected, all the tubes had to be cut away and replaced with new ones.   New bearings were forged and machined also by Tim and he even constructed a wheel drop pit for later repairs if so needed.   Many parts have been renewed or replaced, scraped clean and repainted.   Finally, in February 2002, the engine was back in full steam.   Tim’s train depot featured tea and cookies, a pictorial display of classic steam locomotives and several rides back and forth over 170 meters of track in his backyard.   He also, on occasion, lets you take the wheel, so to speak.   On an environmental note, the 0-8-0’s firebox consumes old buildings and other junk burnables the island offers.

Last I saw, he was in the process of constructing some carriages so people could ride in comfort instead of sitting on the tenders bleachers.

Enjoy the pictures,  Cheers, Dave

I haven't posted here because I don't really railfan; however I do see trains.  Friday, I took a few shots of the CN (former B&LE) train going past the Cleveland Cliffs (former Armco) plant as I was going into the Rite Aid pharmacy just south of Butler, Pennsylvania.  There were two engines on the point, and two engines pushing.  This is the end of the train, and all the hoppers are still lettered BLE.  I finally got photographs that show road numbers of some engines to look up what they are.  I can't tell one modern engine from another.  These are both SD70M-2, engine numbers 8804 and 8827 on the end.

Two weeks ago, I finally got an opportunity to get a photograph of the Cliffs switcher just south of where I photographed the CN engines.  I do not know what engine this one is either.  I wasn't able to read the white markings on the photograph when enlarged.

Dave,  Are these photos current or from 2002?  It would be interesting to see an update if the photos are from the early 2000s.  I have been studying the battle for Guadalcanal that my father fought in.  These photos of the island, the saw grass, and jungle give me a good idea of the difficult terrain that our Navy and Marines faced in the South Pacific.

Tim is the ultimate model railroader to import his own railroad from Poland.  Thanks for sharing.  NH Joe

Greetings Joe,

Some of the photos are from 2004 but current pictures would look much the same.   Our last visit was February 2020, just prior to the start of the Covid closures.   It's a lush and beautiful island.   Rarotonga is very rugged and has several high peaks and lush tropical jungles.   The Cook Islands are about 500 miles southwest of Tahiti and comprise a group of 15 islands (6 in the Northern group and 9 in the Southern group).   The northern group of islands are basically coral atolls - elevation of 1-2 meters.    Our son served two years in the Peace Corp on Rarotonga.   In his first letter home he stated that it was soooo beautiful he didn't know how he was going to leave.   That letter was delivered 30 years ago.  The rest is history.   We have made 15 visits to the Cooks over the past many years.   It is a long flight and as we get older, the flight gets less appealing but, it feels like a second home to us since we have family living there so I am sure we have a few more trips in our future.   It has been a few years since I have seen Tim and the train.    His original plan was to set up a tourist line that would run over a kilometer of track.   The small land area and the difficultly negotiating Polynesian land rights probably provided the major road block.   Will check on him when we next visit.

My father also served in the South Pacific during WWII.  He was a naval medical officer and also served on Guadalcanal, but his time there was after a secured base hospital was established.  He also spent time in New Caledonia.    Many Cook Islanders served in the New Zealand military during the war.  The US did establish a naval air base on the island of Aitutaki and was ready to mount a defense but the Japanese army never got that far west to pose a threat.    Today, all that is left of the base is an unused runway!

Thanks for your response and the note about your father's service.    Nice to know we have more in common than just the love of trains!

Cheers, Dave

This ARR box car was posed beside the railroad headquarters in Anchorage early in 1983.  In 2001, MTH released a RailKing model of it, which was missing the telephone number that was a dominant feature of the car. When I emailed MTH customer service about the omission, I received a response saying, with an obvious degree of shock, "We would never put someone's phone number on a car!"  When I pointed out that the real railroad had done so, the curt reply was "I'll pass it along to our design team."  I doubt that my observation was ever passed along to anyone.1983 Feb ARR Advertising Car, Anchorage

So, I did a little Googling and that phone number still belongs to the Alaska Railroad; however, it appears to be the desk line for one of their real estate folks these days.

At the very least, if MTH didn't want to put the real number phone number on the car, they could have at least kept the area code and changed the prefix from 265 to 555. Would have been better than not putting anything at all.

It would be cool to see this modeled in O scale, but with a phone number this time.

Anyway, thank you so much for the awesome photos!

I wanted to share this with you all. If you haven't seen any of YouTuber Railfan Dan videos, he does videos of trains on the ground and by drone. The quality of his videos are sometimes breath taking as his videos are of Northern California, north of Sacramento, and southern Oregon. This area is a very busy route for both BNSF and Union Pacific. I wish I could claim fame for his videos! ;-) Here's a sample videoed in the Feather River Canyon. You'll also want to check out his videos up and around Mount Shasta. His videos are also great for unwinding after a difficult day at work! I hope you enjoy.

Thank you so much for the link. Beautiful video.

In addition to the SD38s that I posted about a few days ago, Pittsburgh is also home to 2 of the 4 remaining straight GP59s left in the US (NS retains GP59E and GP59ECO rebuilds; many of the former and all of the latter received significant carbody alterations). Both units are rostered by Carload Express, and have stayed almost exclusively on the company's Allegheny Valley Railroad, running with no rhyme or reason on road freights and turns.

11D10AC4-01B9-4355-9E20-1F1CF0D757B7

On the day I went out to chase the road's AVR-3 turn to Washington, 4551 was the sole power on an usually short two-car train. Running long-hood forward, here the unit passes under PA 519 after passing by 84 Lumber's world headquarters.

2E1AAFE6-ED24-439E-AD71-7478EDB9DB8D

AVR spent much of the summer reballasting their Washington & Pittsburgh sub to handle 25-mph trains instead of the usual 15 or so. With the completion of this work, recent months have seen SD60Ms handling trains as short as 5 cars for AVR-3, which used to be a haven for just four-axle power.

C033BF95-C03E-4D93-A865-F6CDBECF4425

4551 crosses over the long bridge over the southern part of Washington, PA as it approaches its second customer of the day. Despite the ballast upgrades, the crew ran at 15-mph the whole way down, either because of the more limited visibility of the long hood or because of the two customers they had to work.

C0744260-6F5E-4201-922D-E5C230F4B3CF

Returning from Penn Plastics, 4551 approaches downtown Washington. The unit retains its former Norfolk Southern 'unibrow;' its sibling, 4552, is in remnants of the older thoroughbred scheme, but retains its Operation Lifesaver graphics.

A4C2EB1E-720E-4B9D-935F-0AD84668588D_1_201_a

The train passes the former B&O station, now used as a restaurant. At this point, my chase got much more difficult, as the train accelerated to the new 25-mph track speed with no more customers to work.

I don't think stepping outside my mother-in-law’s back door qualifies as rail fanning, per se.  But it’s certainly convenient.  Maybe a “Lazy Man’s Railfanning.”  But still fun nonetheless.  This is a Norfolk Southern line running along the Monongahela River about 1/2 hour SE of Pittsburgh.  (This is where my avatar photo was taken.)

Lee Hall Depot, a restored 1881 C&O station, was a two-fer for me:  first, its freight room was a fantastic location to set-up our club's traveling layout and run trains for three Saturdays in December; and, second, being on the CSX mainline connecting Richmond and Newport News it allowed railfanning by stepping out the backdoor and getting snapshots of Amtrak and CSX trains.

So, as we were packing up the layout, CSX and AMTRAK provided a few more photo ops.

Like much of the south and northeast, Pittsburgh got hit with about six inches of snow earlier this week that is slowly melting away. On Wednesday, I took the opportunity to try and get some wintertime shots of my favorite local shortline, the Allegheny Valley Railroad, on its run from Glenwood to Washington. 405178B3-F1A9-415F-BDB5-12B644088998

I started my chase at Bruceton, PA, instead of waking up early and going closer to downtown. This CDP (some new suburban McMansions and light industry) is the over-under crossing of the former Pittsburgh & West Virginia and the Baltimore & Ohio, today the Wheeling and Lake Erie and AVR. Behind the bridge is the interchange track for the two roads.

1CF4917D-A77E-4B32-8D7A-D14305634D8A

Approaching the Country Store, Venetia, PA. As I am sure I have mentioned, AVR spent the summer upgrading the ballast on the line, allowing six-axle power and a track speed of 20 MPH instead of 10-15, though today's crew was likely running at 25 (I had perhaps 3 minutes of a lead on them).

Tuesday's turn was unusual in that the train had eight frac sand hoppers in addition to the normal boxcars and plastics hoppers. With the cratering of oil prices in 2018, among other (nonpolitical) factors, Range Resources in Wylandville stopped receiving regular shipments of sand, which shrunk AVR-3 by a good twenty cars.

C473EA8E-6709-4F11-B57B-6991E98B7321

There does not seem to be a rhyme or reason to what powers the turn; earlier this month a two-car train drew a sole GP59, while a 5-car train drew two SD60Ms. Today's power was a return to form, in some ways, with the return of GP40-3s to the train. 4001, rebuilt and repainted in 2019, sported a K3 series horn that gave the day a pseudo-Canadian feel.

F68582FB-1D95-4A3A-AD58-6E4E9A0DDDB2

The conductor rides the stirrup of the two boxcars being switched to International Paper at Wylandville. The train left with just one plastic hopper, and I mistakenly assumed they were going all the way to Washington, PA (they did not).

Rail-fanning at Imlay City, Michigan • January 15th, 2022 • 17ºF

Imlay City is about 70 miles north of my train room. It is a historic city with a lot of historic homes & businesses. I arrived at 12:30 PM and stayed for five hours. This BNSF is a rare catch in Michigan and it was the lead locomotive in a fast mixed freight. Outside the train station is a GTW Caboose & Passenger Car.

Track side is a grain elevator. Inside the station is a model of a GTW Steam locomotive built by Jim Gilkson in 1931. Scale 1/16 to the inch.

While returning from a trip out west with the family in September 1973, I spotted this little train that was stopped on the tracks that ran parallel to the road. I don't remember exactly where this was, but I think somewhere in Wyoming.

Wondering what was on the other side, I drove across the tracks on the crossroad in front of the locomotive. Looked like they were cleaning up the aftermath of some sort of wreck.

Here’s some CSX action over the past couple weeks…

January 21st @ the CSX yard in Framingham, MA.  The yard crew is busy shifting cars around. I was standing on the shady side of the train, but I liked the look of the sun shining on the yellow end of the long hood.  Check out the cool snow flanger in the background…115FF29A-2918-48E0-B36A-8F4889A1D45D

Here are a couple more shots of the flanger taken this past August.  I love the little “Got Snow?” bubble.  It’s probably going to be put to good use after this weekend’s big storm!

Back to more recent action.  Here’s a video of the yard job pictured above shuttling cars to the westbound departure yard…

January 27th @ North Grafton, MA.  A very short (one car!) local freight heads east on the CSX/MBTA mainline on its way back to Framingham, MA.  Just ahead of the locomotive is a trailing-point switch that leads to the Grafton & Upton Railroad’s North Grafton yard…7CD441F4-DF79-4088-A2CF-4AF85D3FADA6

Here’s a video of the same local as it passes though the MBTA’s North Grafton passenger station…

In Tenino, WA, I'd just caught the NB container train when two Sherrif deputies pulled up and asked me what I was doing there. Before that they sat there for a few minutes, I assume for checking my plate.
You should have seen the looks on their faces when I showed them the camera bag. They clearly expected something different (and more interesting to handle). No meth here, I told them.

20220130154537_IMG_6264-0120220130164430_IMG_6283-0120220130165627_IMG_6339-01

I even opened up the camera bag.
Ironically there was a train coming and I really think they waited to see if I'd take photos of it. That's the last photo here.
I'd never saw the Sherrif stop there before. If they'd been jerks, I would have told them the local police always drive by and wave at railfans, and that the mayor has come to talk with train fans in the past as well...

I didn't video this, but here's a video of the restoration of Southern Pacific 1744 2-6-0 at the Brightside Yard in Niles Canyon Railway SF Bay Area, CA. The video shows the volunteer team removing the driver tires for replacement. Dirty and heavy job! They don't have the buildings or resources that some other historic railways have, so they are out in the yard in the cold and damp Niles Canyon. NCRY depends on donations and volunteers for these restoration efforts. Behind them in the tent is Oregon's Skoocum #7 2-4-4-2 compound and articulated locomotive that pulls excursion trains on occasions. I posted photos of the Skookum running on the Niles Canyon tracks back in this thread back in October 2021. Here's the link to the video.

We have ridden the Autotrain and NE Corridor many times. I have always been greeted by a smiling  Amtrak employee. 😁

At Harrold, Texas, I took these two photos in 2013.  The Bolton GP7 is still there, faded a bit but appears to be in decent operating condition, and is still in use.  Bolton receives unit trains of grain, and switches them, in small cuts of cars, to an auger pit, loading directly into trucks.

Although the old geep is still there, the grain silos are not.  We were driving down to visit family in the Dallas area a few years ago, in stormy weather, and, as we approached Harrold, there were emergency vehicles on the access road, as well as BNSF vehicles.  (Harrold is between Wichita Falls and  Childress, on the ex-Fort Worth and Denver route of the Texas Zephyr.)  A tornado had just attacked the silos 15 minutes earlier.  A corrugated steel one was warped badly, and the riveted steel ones, plus the other corrugated one, had completely collapsed, blocking both the BNSF main track and the CTC siding.  There was some grain on the ground, about enough to make a 15-foot high pile, but I suspect that there had been more, sucked up and spread all over Wilbarger County by the tornado.  Since Bolton no longer has silos, they have adapted that hopper to auger to truck method of doing business, using the rail cars for storage.  Apparently the tornado did not damage the locomotive, which was a few hundred feet west of the photo location.  Good thing we did not leave home 15 minutes earlier or we would have been very close -- too close -- to the tornado.

In today's Class I rail fanning paradigm, where standard cab and interesting power from the 1980s and 1990s have steadily been overtaken by the same two widenose cabs, any sort of deviation from the norm, such as a horn show, inspires happiness for railfans. Some horn shows, such as those given by one engineer on the Norfolk Southern Pittsburgh District from 2019 through mid-2021, were truly exceptional. In this video, I compiled clips from the times when I was fortunate enough to be trackside for them.

The thumbnail and picture are from the last of these shows, when the engineer ran an extra NS move hauling retired SD70ACUs from Altoona to Progress Rail.

Traveling in style to the Super Bowl on 02-10-22 !   Tacked on to the SW Chief was the private car "Hollywood Beach". The car was built in 1956 and all the glass work was as built,  in lieu of a dome car, which would not meet clearance limitations.  Originally IMG-6203Seaboard Air Line Railroad.  Naperville, IL station.

I've seen this car on the VRF cameras through the mid-west. Couldn't make out the name on the drum head.

It's early evening in summer, as BNSF 5218 West slows to 50 MPH, in order to take the crossover from Main 1 to Main 2, at Zita.  This location is at the geographic south (railroad west) edge of Amarillo, Texas.  As soon as the rear end clears, the exhaust from the big GE's will darken and the train will accelerate to 70 MPH, in its quest to get the trailers and containers to Hobart Yard in Los Angeles.

We don't have as much snow as you, Gary, but the temperatures did plummet last night.  Not today, but the deer do visit our feeders too.  That is the first I knew there even is a Detroit Windsor railroad tunnel.  I assumed they used a bridge.

Hi Mark: This tunnel opened on July 26, 1910 and it goes under the Detroit River to Windsor Ontario, Canada. It is owned by the Canadian Pacific Railway and it only has freight trains. The tunnel on the left was made taller in the 80’s to handle the taller auto racks.

We also have a auto tunnel to Canada. When we go to Canada we prefer the Auto Tunnel because it is faster than the Ambassador Bridge. The Auto Tunnel does not allow trucks and both the USA & Canada Customs work fast to keep traffic moving. They do not want cars stopping in the tunnel do to carbon monoxide.

Negotiations are now under way between USA & Canada to run passenger trains from Detroit to Toronto. This is being promoted by the construction on the Michigan Central Station and the Ford Motor Company.

Gary, Thank you.  I didn’t know there is an automobile tunnel either.  I can see a passenger run from Detroit to Toronto would be a good thing.  You might think living in Northwestern Pennsylvania I would have been to Michigan at one time or another; but no, the closest was Marblehead, Ohio

Adrian, that is no model, I know exactly where 6915 is displayed. It used to have a larger friend on display at the same museum, I wonder if anybody can guess what locomotive that was? ;-)

Oh yes it is definitely a model UP6915. It’s hard to tell with the other actual UP6915 in the background.

Inspect the porch area in the photo very closely. Yup I had to go all the way to Pomona fairplex to setup this photo.

Mark,

Yunz need to come out our way for a visit some time, if you're up to it.  We're fortunate to have a large array of rail-related and historical facilities and sites that are both common and unusual at the same time, like the tunnels.  All are definitely interesting regardless.  @trainroomgary does a good job of highlighting many of them.

But even better, and something else you may not know, is that we also have a large community of immigrants from southwestern PA who came here in a big wave nearly a hundred years ago now, when Henry Ford started offering a $5-a-day wage for assembly line workers.  The Warrendale community in the city of Detroit was/is heavily populated by these folks, including my late grandfather (from Dunbar, PA) and my late grandmother (from Footedale, PA), who never new each other back home, but met and married here in 1927.

There are many of us here with roots in your neck of the woods, and ties that still link us to what my grandmother always affectionally called "Pennsy".

I have good eyes and I still had to blow up the photo to see the model on the front porch! Very clever Adrian. I've been to the Pomona Fairplex and visited the Railgiants museum and went to the Winter Nationals at the dragstrip, and I live in northern California. A bit of a drive! When I went 4014 was still at the Railgiants before UP took her away to Cheyanne.

The wife and I spent the President's Day weekend in San Diego and on Sunday, took Amtrak's Surfliner up to Los Angeles, had lunch, then took it back to San Diego. This was our first ride with the new Siemens Charger locomotives. I never get tired of taking that ride. Just beautiful.

Nice photos! I didn't know that Amtrak and Caltrans had partnered on the Surfline. I really need to go out and photo some Siemens Loco's of the Amtrak Capital Corridor passenger trains here in San Jose.

Hi Folks,

I was able to get out to the local CN yard last two weekends with the kids.  Nice sunny days!

Last weekend was a bust with nothing but a couple of graffitied cars…

This weekend was a little better… nothing going or coming from the tunnel under the St Clair river, but lots of switching action to keep kids entertained.

The first photo is a couple of road engines headed to the yard ‘wye’ to turnaround and head to pickup their freight (that we never see leave .  The lead loco is a Citirail engine or former citirail… CN 3942. Even got a ‘toot’ for the kids.

The next photo is of the engine / yard slug / engine combo working our end of the yard before departing to takes some cars to one of the local refineries.  CN 7264, CN281 and CN 7068. 7264 and 7068 are GP9RM. According to the web 7264 was built in 1959 which I find amazing.  You cannot see the numbers in the photo… not great… you can see a few switching engines in the background that I cannot identify.

Kept the kids entertained!

I see in one of the previous post folks talking about the Windsor tunnel.  The original Sarnia tunnel was opened in 1891 and a newer tunnel replaced the current tunnel in 1995.  Wiki link here.  I remember seeing a video where CN used a ferry to take cars across the St. Clair River that could no longer use the tunnel… the pilings for the dock are still visible… before the newer tunnel was completed.

Interesting history here in this little town!

John

PS thank you all for your posts with great and interesting photos… really enjoy seeing everything!

Here's some photos I took back in June 2008 of Dixiana two truck Shay. Roaring Camp is in Felton, California in the Santa Cruz Mountains. They have two Shays, the Dixiana #1 two truck Shay, and Sonora #7 a 3 truck Shay. Don't expect to go very fast, top speed is around 8 to 9 mph, but they climb a 8% grade pulling a full consist of open passenger cars.

Blow down.

Thanks. The Surfliners are and have been very successful between San Diego all the way up to San Luis Obispo and back. 👍

Come to think of it, WP, California has embraced Amtrak over the decades and seems to be getting better each year moving the amount of people it does. So I for one, would be interested in seeing photos of the Capitol Corridor passenger trains when you're able to get around to it. 😉

Vern, I'm trying to find time to go over to the Santa Clara Amtrak and Caltrain station, because between 3pm and 6pm I can catch Amtrak, Caltrain commute trains, and occasionally a UP freight heading south out of Oakland.

Caltrain commuter trains go from San Francisco down the peninsula to San Jose, and is currently being transitioned to all eclectic with overhead power. The F40PH's are aging and spew diesel exhaust right through many neighborhoods along the route. Caltrain still has 5 F40PH-2 screamers that have direct drive HEP's off the main mover, so they run at 900 rpm all the time, even when stopped! I'll see if I can catch one on video so you can hear just how loud they are stopped at the station.

Wow. So the peninsula commuter trains are going to be all-electric. That's awesome and how times have changed. Way back in the late 1960s, I worked for Western Airlines ramp services at the airport as a summer job during college. I lived in Redwood City one summer and San Mateo the next summer. I would catch the Southern Pacific commuter trains to go north to San Fran. and south to San Jose on my days off. Back then, the Espy commuters were powered by EMD GP9s if memory serves. That would certainly clean up the air along the route when the electrics to into service. Thanks for the update, Scott.

The electric train service between San Francisco and San Jose is still several years into the future.  The entire project is part of the CA high speed rail system.  Eventually electric trains will be able to run from San Francisco to LA.  The completion of that project is far into the future and billions over budget.  NH Joe

Well, then maybe it’ll be better for the next generation, if they can figure out a way to pay for it. 😉

I went over to the Santa Clara, CA train station this morning on a cool and overcast day. Here's a quick description of Santa Clara for those unfamiliar: Santa Clara is located at the southern tip of San Francisco Bay and is the heart of Silicon Valley with corporate headquarters for Intel, AMD, NVIDIA, Agilent and many more. The Santa Clara train station building houses the SBHRS (South Bay Historical Railroad Society) which has two large model railroads in N and HO scale.

The Santa Clara train station services Caltrain (San Jose to San Francisco), Amtrak California Capital Corridor (San Jose to Sacramento), and ACE (Altamount Commuter Express (San Jose to Stockton), but ACE does not run on weekends. Just south of the station is a small Union Pacific yard that is not used much anymore.

This morning I was lucky and unlucky to catch the Amtrak Coast Starlight (Seattle, WA to Los Angeles, CA). Unfortunately I had just gotten out of the car and onto the loading platform when the Starlight rounded the corner and I barely had time to get my phone out to photograph the train traveling at 40 plus mph. I should have been on the other passenger platform as well! :-(

And then I was starting to head over to the Amtrak platform when the Amtrak Capital Corridor was rolling into the station, and this is on the weekend!

Starlight passing through as it doesn't stop at Santa Clara. Next stop San Jose Diridon Station about 4 miles down the tracks. This mornings Starlight only had 6 passenger cars, sometimes it's as large as 12 cars. It still has two GE Genesis loco's pulling it.

Amtrak California Capital Corridor. I couldn't fit the whole train in one shot, so front and back photo. Eastbound trains are pushed. In the photo it's heading north, but just 1/4 mile up the tracks it turns right and heads northeast.

Caltrain MP36PH-3C #926 with Bombardier consist. Notice the SBHRS museum sign as they are open today. I've posted photos of museum before.

Here's a couple of videos of two Caltrain's that I videoed this morning.

Northbound heading to San Francisco being pushed by F40PH-2 with Nippon Sharyo consist rolling into the station.

Same Northbound heading out of the station to SF.

Southbound heading to San Jose Diridon Station. I love the deep throaty sound of the MP36PH-3C! Turn up the sound! The 6 Caltrain MP36PH's are all mated to a Bombardier consist of  5 or 6 cars. One of the cars is for bikes and their riders and they are almost always full.

If you follow professional photographers from Pittsburgh on Instagram, every fall you will see at least one post of the changing colors and a train in what we call "The Trench," a cut built by the PRR that separated their mainline from the downtown streets and the Allegheny Commons Park. While not quite as scenic during the summer, the area is still fairly photogenic, although difficult to shoot with the sun unless the photographer (or their tripod) is six feet tall and able to see over the fence. In this video, a friend and I were hoping to catch the Allegheny Valley Railroad's turn to Island Avenue and the Norfolk Southern interchange; instead, we were treated to multiple EMDs and a meet between two manifests, both with cuts of slab gondolas.

We did pop over to the AVR's yard to see if AVR-6 had left yet, and found the usual eclectic assortment of power; an SD40-3 rebuilt from an SD45, a GP59, and a mother-slug GP40-3/ex-N&W/NS/leaser GP40 set.

Something a little different. The Long Island Railroad Hempstead Branch line runs from New Hyde Park, to a terminal in Hempstead NY. One of the bridges in Garden City, has a huge appetite for truck bodies and regularly eats them for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. The bridge averages about 1-2 hits per month. I drive under it several times a day and have witnessed more than a few of these strikes. A couple notable ones included a brand new CAT excavator with the cab ripped off, several boom trucks that went boom, and many can opener box trucks. Each strike requires road closures, rail service suspension, and track and bridge inspections before the line can be reopened. Fines to the truck drivers and their companies total in the thousands.

The town and the railroad have added overhead signs, flashing warning lights, you name it, but I guess you can't teach stupid. It's amazing how many drivers are not aware of their vehicle height.

The LIRR has secured funding to replace and raise the bridge from it's current 10'4" clearance to 14'0". I took some pix of the current state of the bridge yesterday and will post more as construction progresses. From what I have heard, the plan is to raise the track and bridge 6" at a time over several weekends until the new span can be rolled into place during the final lift. The LIRR runs on electrified 3rd rail, further complicating the work.

Some additional info here.

Gary, Those are all excellent photographs!  You had a great day!  I have never heard of Checkers, but it looks extremely inviting after a cold day railfanning!!

I know, we and others have talked about the need for me to visit Michigan.  How short a drive it is from here in Northwestern Pennsylvania, yet I have never been!!

Hi Mark: Thanks for taking a look. These “Winter Wonderland” photos are the best of the best from my 21 - 22 rail-fanning season. Checkers is a fast food restaurant & in some states it is called Rally’s.

I go to Pittsburgh PA about once every two years to watch the Detroit Tigers play the Pittsburgh Pirates in MLB inter league games. The drive time to Pittsburgh is about five hours. 300 miles. If you want to vacation in Michigan, check out this link:

The old saying; “The early bird catches the worm” also applies to rail-fanning. The early rail-fanner catches the beautiful clouds & locomotives. Today was a beautiful morning with a chill in the air. The first photo is a selfie. Guess who? Check out these locomotives and the safety derailer in photo #5.

Thanks Vern, really glad you enjoyed my rail-fanning. I hadn't done that in a long time, so I had a good time hanging out at the train station. I'm still going to try and catch a new Amtrak Siemens Charger and post it. FYI - the Siemens Chargers are manufactured in South Sacramento, so they don't have to go far to deliver them to Amtrak Capitol Corridor. :-)

Trip on the Silver Star from Newark Penn Station to Staples Mill Road Richmond VA last January. Had a Viewliner 1 going down and a Viewliner 2 returning. Shots include an Amfleet logo I've never seen. The famous Trenton bridge sign, an Amtrak Heritage paint scheme and different phases of Amtrak paint on the Viewliners. When waiting for my return trip an long train of DODX flats passing through Staples Mill Road. The diner doesn't measure up to the Heritage fleet of a few years ago but at least there is one on the Silver Service now. As I said in my last post in this thread I would catch an Amtrak train in Santa Clara being pulled or pushed by a Siemens Charger. I was lucky again, although I had some trouble with the video on the first train as it was very sunny and bright today and difficult to see my iPhone screen! For the folks in the forum still suffering in the cold, this might warm you up, it was 72 degrees here today.

My last post in this thread I was at the Santa Clara University station, in this post I'm at the Santa Clara Great America station right next to Levi's stadium where the San Francisco 49ers play. The station is so named because of Great America Amusement park on the other side of Levi's stadium. When the Amusement park is open and there is a football game, this place is jam packed!

I caught two trains today being pushed by Siemens Charger SC-44's. The first train was a ACE (Altamont Commuter Express) that goes between San Jose and Stockton, around 70 miles one-way. First is a photo of it coming into the station, I thought I had my iPhone set to record, but not to be!!!

You can hear just how quiet the Charger is, and there was never even a hint of diesel smell from it. There was little to no breeze today either. All I could smell was hot brakes!

Next, and I caught much better video's of the Amtrak/CT (Caltrans) Siemens Charger SC-44. It seems Amtrak doesn't have the presence on the locomotive like Caltrans does, but it is co-operated.

Here's a photo of Santa Clara County VTA (Valley Transportation Authority) light rail going over the overpass above the train station. Busy place, pretty good rail-fanning here.

A closer look at VTS light rail.

More great photos and video clips from Northern California! It appears that the Amtrak/Caltrains train with the Siemens Charger locomotive and high-level passenger cars is just like the Surfliner trains in Southern California, except in different livery.

Good work again, Scott and thank you for this. 👍

Mark

Used to take the Regional into Williamsburg where my daughter lives but its a much longer trip--lose time through the yards and heading into downtown Richmond. My son in law works in Richmond and picks me up at Staples Mill, quite the station. Its on the main Amtrak line so more than the two a day to Williamsburg. The one I would take is currently annulled due to low ridership with the pandemic. The roomette costs more but is much more comfortable than coach. Lots of railroad activity--you should make a trip back to Richmond.

Scottie, I knew Staples Mill was busy years ago.  In the 1980s I had a couple work sites that were near stations up the line towards Washington.  At one, you could see the Amtrak trains stop at Quantico, and another in Fredericksburg.  I recall the orange Tropicana trains as well on the RF&P.  We've been back in Pennsylvania for almost 30 years, and there has never been a reason to go back.  Now that we are retired, we hope we can get out more.  Thank you.

Rail Fanning in SF? Does San Francisco still have a railroad besides Muni and Caltrain Commuters? Yes it does, just one. San Francisco Bay Railroad servicing Piers 94 and 96, mostly recycling industries with 15 miles of track and a small yard. The railroad has just one locomotive, an Alco S2. The S2 looks freshly painted on this day. Union Pacific has 2 or 3 pickups a week and uses Caltrain owned tracks that they have a right of way. So UP doesn't interfere with Caltrain commuter trains they run late at night.

In this video, which is 24 minutes (feel free to use fast forward), there is a lot of switching action with the Alco S2 and some UP action through the streets with a couple of Geeps. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think they are GP-38's. The video was taken on a busy and beautiful SF day June 16, 2016.

I hope you enjoy it. Here's a Google maps link so you can get your bearings.

A photo taken today of an E9 Southern Pacific Daylight #6051 on static display at the California State Railroad Museum, Sacramento, CA. It may be on static display today, but this is a running E9. They roll it out once in a while for Cal State Railroad Museum Polar Express excursions.

Also photographed today, the only remaining Southern Pacific Cab Forward AC-12 4294. It does not run! To bad. At least it's not outside rotting.

Working on some other photos taken today. I'll post them later.

Last Thursday rode the Silver Star from Newark Penn to Richmond for another trip to see the grandkids. A couple of additional shots in Newark Penn. The waiting room and benches are being completely restored but slowly. The took all the fast food out of the waiting room. Got chatting in the dinner so not many shots on the road but a couple of the Amtrak loco facility in DE. Food if anything was even worse this time if that's possible.

Scott ( @WesternPacific2217),

Thanks for posting an interesting and welcomed update.

You may not have noticed but 6051 was captured higher up in this thread, on 1/29/22, and much longer ago in her lifetime (nearly 28 years back), at Golden Spike 125 in Ogden, Utah on 5/9/1994:

Mike

It's good to see that's she's well taken care of, and is still ready to roll after all this time.

She's looking very good in your pix.  I wonder if she's received a little cosmetic updating in the interim?

Hi Mike, glad you enjoyed it, and thanks for pointing out the previous photos of #6051 in Ogden in OGR.

It does look all pretty under the lights in the museum roundhouse! Plus, there is no smell of diesel fuel or oil. I asked one of the docents about that, and apparently they wash them down just outside before bringing it into the roundhouse. Locomotives and rail cars that are not currently on display at the museum are stored in a garage at the old Southern Pacific Railway Workshops just a few hundred yards away. The SP Railways Workshop is still an active shop.

Currently the Pacific Locomotive Association and Niles Canyon Railway are restoring Southern Pacific #1744 2-6-0 and the 3 axle/wheel assemblies are currently at the SP Railway Works being turned to receive new tires. Huge lathe!!!

If any railfans are interested, here's a couple of links to the restoration at the Brightside Rail Yard in Niles Canyon where a team of volunteers are restoring 1744.

Here's some history before the move to Niles Canyon.

We are at a siding at the Amtrak Yard. This loco is idling as it awaits it’s return trip to Chicago. It is 28ºF after a two inch snowfall. I am wearing the Detroit Tigers ball cap. Using a fisheye lens along with Adobe Photoshop. Makes for a fun way to go rail-fanning.

I was over in York today near the fairgrounds to look at a non rail project. I got caught coming home in some some rail crossing traffic of a York Railway (YRC) set pulling some military equipment. I had no idea what this short line was hauling when I returned around and parked my vehicle. The last time I saw something like this was just north of Houston back in late ‘90 or early ‘91 headed to the ship channel before we went to Kuwait. Of course those sets of trains were hauling hundreds upon hundreds of tan colored tanks and humvees. I’m pretty certain this wasn’t current defense equipment.

As I have posted elsewhere, my winter break this year involved an unusually large number of SD38s...a few friends and I joined the caravan of western PA and out-of-state rail fans chasing the irregular "MISC" freight that the B&LE ran south out of Greenville on December 28th. 862 is a "straight" or pre-Dash-2 SD38, still in its ex-DMIR paint, with former Bessemer 868 in Halloween livery trailing.

Hi WRW, those are M2 Bradley Infantry Vehicles. Notice I didn’t say tank! These are light armored treaded vehicles designed to move troops, but not to engage with an enemy tank. The Bradley’s in your video have the optional turret with 25mm automatic chain gun. They have a crew of 3 and carry 6 infantry. They are still active duty.

Fisheye Lens - How it works.

Thanks guys for the compliments and checking out my fisheye photos. I carry two fisheye lenes in my camera bag, GoPro Max and an Altura 8mm Fisheye on a Canon DSLR.

These were shot with a GoPro Max in 360º Mode which is a fisheye. This camera has two fisheyes, one looking forward and one looking to the rear. This combination allows for a 360 degree view.

Using the GoPro post production software called “GoPro Player”, these photos are enhanced by bending the horizon line. This goes from zero to 360º and everything in between. Zero would be how the human eye sees the horizon to a full 360º how a fish would see the horizon.

The Altura 8mm lens on a Canon DSSR is a fixed horizon. What you see is what you get.

Both cameras produce quality images using a fisheye lens. I use “Adobe Photoshop” to finish these images. Below are three photos. Photo #1: shows the digital view finder on the GoPro Max. Standing next to the Amtrak Charger. Photo #2: shows both of the fisheye. Photo #3: Canon DSLR with a Altura Fisheye.

We spent the past weekend in Amarillo Texas,  just for fun.  Decided to go to the railroad museum there today,  but it's closed except for Thursdays and Saturdays. Couldn't go inside but on the grounds (rails) was something very interesting,  a 10 car atomic train from the 50's. 7 cars carried first nuclear weapons then in their later life carried spent fuel to Yucca Flats. They looked like a hopper car was inverted on a flat car and the gates removed.  Loading was through the roof. Personnel cars looked like they were made from old REA Express refrigerator cars trucks changed to roller bearing , had bunks and kitchen facilities inside,  cupola added to one end with bulletproof glass, and portals for guns.

Got in and out before the rough weather hit.

Would make a great bashing project.

Also there was a helium car,  just like the Lionel ones.

This is the location where a few minutes later I saw the PRR fallen flag bombardier ALB. Sadly I had just put my phone in my pocket and was engaged in other things when we all took notice of the PRR adorned ALB zipped by. Before that the engineer of this particular engine, while waiting for the NB Acela to pass, leaned out the window and asked if we were fishing. Lol. (All of us were in the middle of lot of wetlands and ponds) Good guy! I like these modern train employees.

Budd built observation car ”Babbling Brook“ brings up the markers on todays 5 near East Portal, CO under the Great Divide. 2 ex-Northern Pacific “North Coast Limited” Budd sleeper domes join in the fun. And also a Veterans converted Cabbage from F40PH was present. A fun morning on the hill, is it worth mentioning both kids my son of 7 joined me and the wife for a rather rambunctious morning. Also less than 5 minutes after my capture the clouds in characteristic continental divide fashion cloud socked the whole shot. 3/24

Bobby, You are so correct!!  I worked outside a lot with the power company and then the phone company, until I moved to engineering at age 51.  My dad worked outdoors in all weather his entire career.  Once I was indoors and now retired, I appreciate those men and women who work out in the frigid cold and blazing heat so much!  Adverse weather makes every job harder and the day seem longer, believe me.  Railroad workers are no exception!!

Some shots, not taken IMG_2713IMG_2712IMG_2711IMG_2714on RC, P & E railroad property, of the old CN&W roundhouse/turntable at Huron, SD.   As ,I believe, @Hotwater said, "you'd be surprised how many turntables still exist in N.America".  Point taken !   The old plow marked for Dakota, Minnesota & Eastern did not see any service this winter as our Upper Plains drought lingers.  I only used my snowblower once this winter, of course April may take offense at my statement & bring snow, but the ice is mostly off the lakes.               Rich in SD

That DMIR paint scheme is very attractive I think, it just looks "right".

It was a nice day to go rail-fanning and have a White Castle lunch at the CN Yard, Pontiac Michigan. I was the only person at the yard. There was no crew talk on the railroad scanner. This yard is about a ten minute drive from my train room and I was hoping to see the yard crew building trains, So I went for a long walk & got some interesting photos. I thought White Castle was strictly in Chicago.

White Castle is in about a dozen states and has been here in Indianapolis since the late 1920s.

100 years.  It's apparently the first fast food chain to be celebrating this milestone, although I think A&W may actually be older.  Here in the Detroit area the celebration started in all locations in September of last year and is still going on.

This month's contribution is a special 100th anniversary hamburger on the menu, representing what their burgers were like when they started.  It's actually fairly good and quite different from their normal sliders.
