I just got my Lionel 6-58069, Steam Up! LIRR 39 Blue Boy Box Car. The proceeds are going to preserve and restore Steam Engine 39. The project is a joint venture between the Strasburg Rail Road and The Rail Road Museum of Long Island.

The car was made in NC and has crisp clean graphics and this cars has lots of them. Really well done and I am glad that I supported this project.

It is a work of art, PSU1980, I'm definitely looking forward to receiving mine but I haven't received a tracking email letting me know the status of my order - whether or not it's been shipped or even processed yet. Did the LIRR Museum email you tracking information or did the boxcar arrive without notification it was coming?

Btw, is it usual practice for the RMLI not to send an email confirming they received payment for items like this? I know if you pay online or mail a check you have proof your payment was received and processed but what if you paid with a money order? No acknowledgement from them even then?

The cars were made in the USA, but how do you know they were made in North Carolina?

Lionel has, or had, been using two production facilities for injection molding domestically, reportedly one in Virginia and the other in Pennsylvania (the latter specifically for LionScale cars). The LionScale cars are certainly painted and assembled in Lionel’s North Carolina facility, but I haven’t heard of the company doing the decorations requiring a special printing process there.

Jim,

Yes, Lionel decorates the LionScale cars in their own North Carolina facility.  Lionel also decorates some of the 9700/6464 Made in USA cars themselves, in their same North Carolina facility.  Yes, they also use an outside vendor to decorate some of the 9700/6464 Made in USA cars.

Simplified:

LionScale is decorated in-house by Lionel.

9700/6464 Made in USA decoration is split between in-house at Lionel and their outside vendor.

Gentle Forum Members,

JIM R. To the best of my knowledge, working with our Team Mates at Lionel, this car was produced in the Concord, North Carolina facility.  It is accurate that Lionel purchases the bodies from a plastic forming company and has them delivered as slugs to Concord for painting, decorating and assembly.  This specific car had some graphic issues before production could proceed and my understanding was the corrections were made in house and we proceeded with this beautiful car.

Thank you all for your kind words, we really enjoy making these cars with Lionel for our Club Members.  Your continuing support drives us forward.  We are currently working on a LionScale car for 2019.  Due to production schedules at Lionel it appears it will be a car for the 4th quarter 2019 or even 1st quarter 2020.  We're looking at another boxcar design to supplement our program earlier in 2019.  Things are in flux for the boxcar, the LionScale has the artwork complete, we're just waiting for a few "i" dots and "t" crosses to be made :-)

Hint:  Think down feathers!

Happy Holidays one and all!
