I've got a Railking 0-4-0 Docksider and a light and music caboose from this set:

What kind of functionality will these two have on my son's Lionel  "Scout set"...

… which uses a Powermax transformer/controller?  The set is currently packed up between christmases otherwise I'd just try it out myself.

Also, I'm curious to know what functionality I can expect from this controller which is what I gave to my dad to run his childhood train at Christmas.

Thanks folks,

Yep, the Engine has no sounds, with the audio coming from the caboose.  Will the caboose sounds function from the Lionel controllers?

Good to know about the quality of the MTH RTR locos. I haven't had a chance to run mine yet, but compared to The Scout" loco, the MTH seems more substantial.  Not a huge fan of the Spongebob paint scheme. Maybe a repaint is in it's future...

I've actually had a few more problems with MTH RTR locos than Lionel.  It's important to keep in mind that that part of the market is very price-competitive and RTR locos are always designed to a cost, with all that implies.
