Hi everyone

I had to repair a short in this engine, while i was at it i decided to change the batting in the main and auxiliary

smoke units. Just an FYI while i was dismantling the auxiliary  smoke unit there was a very very small clear insulator

between the smoke funnel and the PCB board (see photos below ). If you must dismantle this aux unit it's a must that this

insulator be put back in the correct place, if not this will create a short. This plastic insulator looks a lot bigger in the photos

than it really is, it's almost invisible. it's possible that many other smoke units have this clear plastic insulator. So keep your eye's

open for something like this.

Thanks for looking

Alex

Do you know the voltage the Lionel smoke fan motor uses? Guessing it is DC also from the + & - on the wires in the lower right corner. I have one that isn't working on a brand new diesel and I really don't want to send it back. The board is almost (if not) identical to the one in your picture above.

Also, interesting find with the insulator, thanks for posting. Good, clear pictures.

Alan, Chuck, right under the insulator is the mounting screw for the resistor

kind of difficult to see in the photo. But you guys are correct, it's there to prevent

a short

Thanks

Alex

At first I was thinking 5 volts, then I was thinking 9 volt battery, glad I asked. I have checked an MTH unit but couldn't remember what voltage it was? Thank you for the reply.
