Report - 2016 Mass Transit Modelers Show and photos

Thanks for the information about the event. I did not even know about this group or about this event.  I just started model in the MTA subway, Metro North and Long Island rail road. Is there a way to sign up for a news letter, I did not see it on the website. I lived  in Brooklyn and most of the pictures I saw where very nicely done, great attention to detail. Very lovely very pictures of the whole event.

Thanks for the pics. Having grown up in Brooklyn, gave me a bit of nostalgia... One question: some of the pics show a third rail - does that actually power the cars, or is that just for show???

Thanks for your posting and glad to see you enjoyed the photos of the 2016 NYCMTA Show.  It doesn't surprise me that you were not aware of these shows (16 years running already) --- seems there are many people (modelers) in that same situation --- but all of our NYC Model Transit Association Meets/shows  generate a good amount of hundreds of attendees regardless,  even new-comers at times.   The "Association" itself is not a messaging-communications site as such,  but solely an "Association" founded by a very small group of 6 or so fellow NYC Transit Modelers and myself as its "Charter Members" back in 1981,  to promote and expand our "Transit Modeling" portion of the rail hobby thru the future years, decades.

Thanks also for applying to my NYC TRANSIT MODELERS GROUP (forum) -- which I set up and founded 16 years ago to function as a messaging and communications website for NYC Transit Modelers as well as ALL CITY transit modelers,   to inter-act and share their ongoing projects with each other.  We also do so here at O-Gauge Forum "Subways-Traction" forum.

I have just earlier approved your NYCTMG Group membership application -  so you can now check out our NYCTMG forum messages, photos albums, links, and other stuff there, and stop in and introduce yourself if you want.

Did you go to the show?  If so, Did you stop over to my Presentation Clinic Area and take one of my flyers and say hello to me at the Rutgers University held show Saturday ?

We will be having another Mass Transit Modelers show this coming OCTOBER 2016 --- but NOT held at Rutgers U -- more info will be coming later from the NYCMT Assn. show member-organizers Steve Olsen and Nate Gerstein for this upcoming show and its new location , also in New Jersey.

2 Questions:   You are no longer in Brooklyn  -- if not, where ?    WHAT SCALE are you modeling, collecting, in ?

Hello again Tom

YES -- that is a photo of me by the "under construction" display module at my Presentation Clinic Area of the room.  I believe I mentioned it was me in the photo in my posting  further above.  Yes, the severity and length of the storm as "forecast" by those usually wrong news forecasters,  turned out to be far less severe, and mostly the worst came late Thursday night  -- Friday was morning drizzle but cloudy and humid all day --- Saturday was a much better and more sunny hotter, humid day.  The turnout was very good --- about the normal very many hundreds who generally show up on show days.  You should have been there !  There were a number of Brass (and some epoxy resin) HO SCALE  "NYW&B Railway" cars for sale !!

OK -- two answers on the outside 3rd Rail seen on the modules. 

(1) -- On my own extensive modular O-SCALE NYC EL System,  my older-era style "EL" exposed type 3rd rail has two toggle switch settings on my control panel board:  '  LIVE and DORMANT '.  I run all my EL trains (and some of my trolleys running UNDER the EL)  in 'two rail insulated track mode. My 3rd rail shoes on my motor car trucks, do not collect the power current !!!  Its more reliable and smoother operating in 2 rail. 

However,  when I have had "visiting" subway or EL cars to my own layout,  cars that operate ONLY off "live" 3rd rail  (I had only 2 occasions in 30 years, heh)  -- we switch that particular track toggle setting to "LIVE 3rd Rail Mode" with both running rails turning "negative".   Some of Vern Gillman's "operational "3rd Rail Shoes" equipped  subway trains ran on my EL layout at a Train Show 25 years ago !

(2)  -- At the (Rutgers U) show, the operating O-Scale Rapid Transit modular layout of Vern Gillman and Steve Olsen for their own subway and EL cars,  uses subway-position style (but exposed)  outside  LIVE 3rd rail --- and all motor cars have custom-designed and fabricated operating spring-loaded PADDLE type 3rd rail shoes like real subway cars.  All track rails on the system are NEGATIVE return grounded.  

Therefore, any power cars of trains having  2 rail insulated wheel equipped cars for "2 rail only" operation,  (like my own fleet) can NOT electrically operate on that system.  

I did pose a number of my EL Cars and work Cars in the yard tracks on Steve and Vern's layout....seen in some of Steve Olsen's beautiful photos I linked to.

Unfortunately I did not go to past show however I am planning on going in Oct.

O scale is what I model in.
