Ross Standard Gauge Switches

Not to confuse these with their o-scale tinplate switches, has anyone used these? I was wondering what your thoughts were.

I would prefer to use ground throws instead of their LGB switch machines, but these come with the machines. Is it possible to not use the machines? (I should get in touch with Ross and see if I can buy switches. Would hate to pay extra for something I'm not sure I want.) I also assume that the machines can be placed on either side of the switch.

I believe the reason for the LGB motor is the extra power. The DC motor makes non-derailing difficult.

The motors are reversible.
