Go to www.tuveson.com. Click on the TMCC for S link in the left hand column. Scroll down until two listings for the SHS 2-8-0 conversions show, the First Attempt link has a link to the dis-assembly instructions with pictures. I hope this will help.

@John O'Neill There have been issues with the gear splitting on this loco.  There is an article on how to replace it.  You can find it in the National Association of S Gaugers Dispatch magazine from May of 2017 on page 17.  Here is a link:

Hi All,

I dabbled in S around the turn of this century.  Returned to O Scale because I could not get used to the smaller, but ideal, size.  I kept some of the S pieces I bought and one of them is the SHS 2-8-0.  Are there any other problems with this loco that have not been mentioned here?  Is the motor a good motor, etc?

Yes, where the tender drawbar attaches to the engine.  The pin breaks and sometimes the mounting area cracks and has to be replaced.  I'll attach a pdf from the NASG site.  I'm in the middle of this at the present.

Mine runs beautifully.  I have he gear in reserve and a couple of options for the drawbar pin repair.  I really like it and wish SHS had been able to stay in business, their products were the best.

Scale Trains now owns the Showcase Line, formerly of SHS then MTH. Scale Trains is working on freight car releases as well as the track system. Engines seem to be a little further out but in their objectives for S gauge. Their website states they are working on redesigning the diesels to incorporate the ESU decoders.

Tom, I'm not up on decoders,  is an ESU what you need for DCC?

ESU is a specific brand of DCC decoder that Scale Trains has adopted for use in all their DCC engines. They use the LokSound 5 in their HO engines, I do not know what will be in the S gauge engines. I use Legacy, not DCC on my layout so my knowledge on DCC is limited.

Hi Everyone: In viewing all of the helpful e mails and links I have concluded that my 75 year old arthritic hand will be unable to repair this gear issue. Does anyone know of or is able to repair the loco? Otherwise I am going to replace the few screws I started to undo to disassemble it and put it on the shelf as a static display! I would be happy to pay someone to do it. Thanks for all of the great suggestions!

There is nothing unique to S gauge about that specific repair so any good train repair person could do it. I send all my repairs to www.goldinhands.com. Ed specializes in S gauge. He has a backlog, I have three engines in the que for next month.

I hope it works out for you. I do not have one of the SHS 2-8-0 engines but they sure look good.

IIRC, there are several people in the S-scale.io group who do.  I need to follow up on this too as I have 3 on them.  Shipping is a major deterrent, I had looked into it but it was so expensive I figured I should try to tackle the job myself... that was about 3 years ago and I still haven't moved on it.
