I finished my Lionel Construction Crane kit (6-12900).  This is a replica of a P & H construction crane mounted on a truck frame.  As purchased, the kit contains pieces molded in 4 colors.  The boom is black.  Crane cab, truck cab, outrigger feet, and wheel hubs are orange.  Truck frame and cab base are gray.  The colors looked too artificial and shiny for me, so I changed things up.  The crane and cab body were painted in Weirton Steel green.  The remaining components were painted flat black and the crane was equipped with my electro-magnet.  It will see duty around the mill collecting scrap.  Only the decals and spray of Dullcote are left to do.

Mark,

Thank you!

Painting the model to get rid of those shiny molded colors makes a world of difference!  It really ratchets up realism.

Yes, indeed.  I wish I could bring myself to refinish  my postwar operating accessories, but I just can't do it.

Wow!  That looks great.  And the paint makes a difference and I have wanted to see one with the cables and all rigged out.  It looks like you weathered the magnet hanging on the end slightly?

Yours looks so good it makes me regret a bit bashing my kit to make the load for the 'Streets low boy tractor trailor below: the can motor that powers this puppy is actually in the trailer and I needed a load to cover it - the cab of the crane covers it.  The truck body was too long to fit the trailer so I had to fit it with the treads.  As George Lassey said, the cab and all looks good with crawler treads (taken from a Tamiya Sherman kit).  I left the crane itself folded up as it is a load on this trailer.  The pity of it is that although this thing runs very well the trailer is so long it sticks out on corners and knocks against too many things alongside the road - as a result this is nothing but a shelf queen any more.
