We finally finished this project up. It is constructed entirely out of MDF. I routed all the edges to try and make it more like wood molding. The control is a DCS Commander remote hooked up to a Z1000 power brick wired to 3 different spots on the track. You can see the IR receiver on the wall. I wired a new electrical outlet with a switch in the closet to hide the wiring. The engine is a Railking SD70ACE from the 30-4219-1 set, which my 5 year old son got for Christmas (thanks JR Junction). He is thrilled, which means I am thrilled.

Nicely done! A former neighbor whose daughter and son still come to visit, asked if I would help with a floor layout, or a shelf layout in his son's room. That was before Christmas. Unfortunately, he and his wife are a bit self centered, and are involved in activities they like, as opposed to doing things that revolve around their childrens' interests. I guess it's time to remind them of the project they've been delaying, or maybe hoping the children would give up on.

Kudos to you for being involved with your son. I relished the time I spent with each of my three sons as they were growing up, and being involved with their respective interests.
