There was a cornfield meet between my Rail King N&W J and a Rail King Camelback. The J's pilot got the worst of the incident, and it needs a touchup of the paint on the pilot. I just bought a one ounce bottle of Floquil Engine Black and WOW, it cost $4.80. Does anyone have experience with a less expensive satin black paint?

Floquil is one of the best and has a great pigment-to-binder ratio giving it a superior coverage capability. I've never run into "seeds" i.e. oversized grains of filler or pigment. The film-build is minimal meaning it won't cover up details excessively. So, on a fine engine, use the good stuff.

In the past, I've spray painted steam loco shells with Krylon brand paint with decent results. Unfortunately, I hear that they no longer offer the semi-gloss black.

Oh, and I'll bet that bottle of Floquil will last you for LOTS of cornfield meets!

...and it lasts forever.  I have bottles of Floquil paint dating back to the 80's that are still useable.  It can be a bit of a problem sometimes opening up one of them, however If you clean the top well before re-sealing then it usually involves just tapping the lid a couple of times with the end of a screwdrive to break the bond...great paint.
