Greetings All,

I am leaving my engines on the track covered by towels to keep them clean.

How many drops of smoke fluid should I put in and do I turn the smoke on for a minute or just let it soak and sit.

Engines are in the basement,it is unfinished.

Thank You!!!

My basement was as damp as any, many things went bad there.

I have not seen any issues with the trains, but they went in the original boxes with the drying packets for storage.

RJR;

Those are disposable batteries, the trains use rechargables. Not the same critter by a long ways.

Also, for the Real vs fake, Are the batteries flush with the bottom of the card on the containers? If not they are counterfeits. Also, look for typo's on the printing, also signs of fakes.

Dewey, be careful, because high in a garage could be too hot in summer.  I have some trains, old Lionel, that belonged to my daughter-in-law's father, which he had stored in a hot area, and items are damaged.

These kind of generalizations are of no value.

saran wrap the boxes. The cling will stop moisture/mold. It also does not harm the color of the boxes over time. I got hit with mold odor with some items left in the wrong place.

There is a product I used that contains Chlorine Dioxide. The boxes need to be put in a garbage can with a fan and sealed. (No, Trains) It kills the mold and spores. Home cleaning/fire services have this as a gas. So, If you ever get hit you can bring it to one of these Companies...

Redshift,

If you are keeping your trains in the basement on the tracks or boxed, I highly recommend the purchase of a dehumidifier.  If you can set it up to automatically empty, let the dehumidifier run round the clock.

Don't put any smoke fluid in the engines, use it only as you need it.

Good luck with your storage.

Here's what I do.  They're stored in the basement.  I store everything that will fit in 110 qt clear plaster tubs.  Labeled and indexed in my inventory.  Each gets a 200 gram rechargeable desiccant pack. Less than  $20 per case total but well worth it when you think about the cost of the trains in them.  Anything that doesn't fit gets sealed in a 1 mil+ plastic bag.  If you but them in bulk they're not that expensive.

Dewey, an air conditioned garage!  You are walkin in tall cotton.  Mine is insulated, but when both cars come in in the summertime, it is hot!

Do you have any data that demonstrates toy trains are damaged in hot garages and what temperatures where during the storage time.

I think the problem is you don't know what your talking about.

All cars and engines stored on heavy duty metal storage shelving in basement, use dehumidifier set at 45 to 50 percent humidity. No rust on carbon steel Gargrave track or wheel axles, no oxide on copper wire and no mildew smell on OEM car packaging.

Older MTH engines equipped with BCR's, no batteries kept in TMCC equipped engines while in storage, considering applying J&W Electronics charging circuit and a BCR to the TMCC engines this will eliminate battery concerns.

Plastic boxes are surely needed. But, you should wrap all your boxes with cling wrap/ It sticks to the box creating a barrier. Check for internet articles highly recommended.
