Swapping Out Pullmor Motor for Can/Fly Wheel Motor

Frank has done work for me and he does good work.  Any day you can dump a Pullmor for a can motor is a good day.

I have a couple of Lionel Reading T1 4-8-4 locomotives that were Timko motored.  They work  fine, my one little gripe is the motor isn't one of the larger Pittman or similar motors, but rather one the size that would be found in a Railking steamer.  It works, but I don't know how much of a strain I'd feel comfortable putting on it.  On the bright side, the T1 doesn't have any traction tires, so there's a limit to how much load I can put on it anyway.

John, it is very easy to use the big Pittman in place of the one Frank uses.  The Mohawk  (3000) he wants done works out great.

new wrinkle... I opened it up (which I should have done first)  and discovered that there is no room for any flywheel because of motor mount which is part of the frame. Am I better off to still go to a  can motor and ERR; or, stay with oversized Pullmor motor.

ERR without a speed control appears to be my only option?????!!!!!!

I am surmising that the conventional Reading T1 (which I also own) will have the same issues.

I've done lots of "conventional" repair work for years,  but this is a new adventure  for me. Sorry about not getting my facts up front!

John, Marty says a large Pittman will fit. On most engines I have seen with this motor the flywheel fits on the output end with the motor mount between the flywheel and the motor. Many large Pittmans don't have a flywheel and ERR cruise will still work with non flywheel motors.  If you have to use the small Mabuchi can you should still be able to pull 5 18" heavyweights or 2-3 times that in freight cars without overheating.

Another option is to remove the existing mount and fabricate your own as this member did.

Not so easy in the Lionel 6-18006 Reading T1, a longer motor wouldn't fit.

I do not have that engine.  I have two Yellowbelly locomotives.   I would let Frank Timko make the call on what fits and what does not.  A great way to go.  Memory serves me that Gerry Morlitz has the 3000 Mohawk converted by Frank Timko.

I'm confused.  The ERR back-EMF cruise control doesn't require any flywheel sensors, AAMOF, it doesn't require a flywheel at all.  If you have a DC motor in there, the Cruise Commander will work fine.
