Tall Buildings Tuesday

Here is the link to the "City Scenes" topic that Don started. You can see a good number of buildings that have come from TW TrainWorx as well as a lot of the historic Schenectady.

Hmm, today is Tuesday, what to offer? Well, all my past York pics are done, no Edison Train Shows left from back then. Ah, I do have a good bunch of pictures that are from 2019 though. These are a bunch(not all, I'll hold some) of pictures from the NJ Hi-Railers Layout for the OGR 50th Anniversary Bash right after York in 2019. To say that there is so much to see on their layout is a complete understatement, and would be an injustice. There are tons of things going on, and I bet I didn't capture them all. I did get some great tall buildings, since their layout has a ton of them. Without further adieu, here we go.

How about that for starters? Plenty more to go around, I'll hold a bunch and post a few here and there in the coming weeks. See how far I can stretch these out. Where are the other tall buildings, and tall building posters?

How about some more of the NJ HiRailer's layout from 2019 OGR 50th Anniversary?

There is just a heck of a lot to see here, and if you blink, you might miss Wonder Woman taking a dog out for a walk maybe? Or is it lassoing an evil pooch?

I probably posted this before but here goes anyway.

Alan, you could probably post two pictures every Tuesday and you would never run out of new things to show us here.

Joe, I am currently working on a new skyscraper that will be situated on the waterfront.  Hopefully I will have that on completed in the next couple of weeks.  It will be the first new tall building in quite a while since available real estate on the layout is at a premium!

Hey, it's Tall Building Tuesday!!! Where are all the tall buildings at? Well, more from the 2019 OGR 50th Anniversary Party at the NJ HiRailers, here we go. BTW, where's yours?

I'm in the early stages of trying to work in this MTH 11 story building, which I got in an auction several years ago for cheap.    The immediate area needs a railing.  The lighting for the building needs to be sorted out , and windows re-arranged.  I don't see me going with the burning - building theme so get the jumpers in off the window sills.   But it seems to  fit in pretty well and it didn't take me a ton of time like scratch building does.                     John

Good to see this come alive again. Sorry, been a couple of busy weeks and just have had no time to get pictures up. Still busy, maybe in a week or two I'll get back into the swing of things.

This building started life as a Rail King Menlo Park building, which came in a toy-like yellow color. Due to the color, I had cannibalized the structure for the plastic girders that connect the floors together and lights for other buildings, and it sat in my parts box for years, so for this project I had to fabricate new girders out of plywood. Everything for this building has been re-painted and mortared and I detailed the first two floors. All in all, it is 7-stories high, and was about an 8-month project from start to finish. I've since attached the base and placed in my industrial area, but you can only see the top 4 floors, so I am debating whether to move it to the foreground because it turned much better than I anticipated.

Here you go....one of the newer tall buildings recently completed on the water front.  The citizens of the great metropolis now have some expensive high rise apartments!

Hey, I was wondering when this would come alive again. Sadly work has been busy this year and finding time to post is not easy for me. I'll have to see what pictures I may have left in my photo gallery. I don't believe there is too much left.

By all means folks, keep this topic alive with great tall buildings. Skip started this topic and has popped in from time to time, Alan as well. I think part of the reason this goes to the wayside is because most of those that post are busy posting/replying on other topics. It is very hard to balance what you post/follow if you have plenty of topics that you follow. See what comes next week, hopefully for all of us here.

Paul, nice work.  My vote is move it to the foreground.

Your layout is a work of art! I love urban railroading having lived various places on the northeast coast and traveled extensively by train on the then Pennsylvania RR now Amtrak Northeast Corridor.

Alan I know you said the building behind the light house is new but what about the one dead center?  I don't recall that one but that may be because I'm always enamored of "Bridge Tower" and the wonderful station to the right.

Hi Joe,

The building to which you refer was purchased at York a couple of years ago.  I then modified it by making a tower on top and brought the same material down each corner so as to integrate the sides/corners with the top of the building.

Alan the tower and the trim give it character.

The NY skyline pictures show a lot of detail.  The roof top water tanks are a component of fire suppession/sprinkler systems.

I am so thankful to see this thread. One of my unfinished sections of the layout is to build a skyline. I started with a tall building built from thin plaxiglass and heavy card stock. It is a representation of the Hancock building in Boston. I have also rendered the Parker House Hotel and Elizabeth Station. More to come.

A great representation of "modernism" architecture.

It's my turn to start Tall Building Tuesday.  Below is a rendition of the Parker house in Boston.  My Dad took my Mother to this restaurant/hotel in 1944 and proposed to her. He was a newly commissioned 2nd Lieutenant in the Army and was being shipped out in a week.  After the war and after they started a big family they would take us to this restaurant when we visited Boston.

I built this using parts from a modeling company called Skyline.  This was a popular toy/building product developed in the 1950's.  You can still find kits that have been salvaged on the internet. I added scenery to represent the construction of the structure.

Show us your structures and why and how you built them. Tall does not mean skyscraper tall, just a bigger building you enjoyed making it come to life.

Wood...I love the Skyline kits.  As you have probably already seen, I discovered them many years ago and have constructed large buildings/skyscrapers with them on the layout.

Here you will see two Skyline skyscrapers...one near the center of the picture and another one to the left.  Click on the picture to get a more detailed view.

Here is another Skyline kit example in the downtown area of the city.

You must have found a dozen kits. Yours are very big. Back in the late 50s and 60s they were very popular.

Beautiful!!  As far as the number of Skyline kits I have, years ago I started collecting them with large buildings in mind.  I have 50 or perhaps a few more of the kits.  If one puts a long window upside down on top of another long window, the floor height is close to O scale.

Oh Boy....!!  I will always remember the great time I had that day and how very thoughtful the NJHR guys were.  They treated OGR to a wonderful 50th anniversary!  The layout was HUGE and beautiful...and Vinny's food was to die for!!

A good time was had by all Alan. I remember it like it was yesterday, Allan, his wife and I got parked at the same time, got on the elevator as well and followed the signs to Dreamland. How else can their layout be described in one word?

They were and still are such great hosts. We all need to see about getting back there some day, not all at the same time, just visiting when we all can.

Hey, it's Tall Building Tuesday. Anyone see Skip hiding behind some tall buildings?

I don't see Skip hiding behind any tall buildings.

I promised to share the history of The Banff Springs Hotel built with the American Skyline product.

The American and Canadian Railroads spent a lot of money after the transcontinental railroad was completed to capture client's interest in the West.  The Canadian Pacific built a luxury hotel in Alberta. It was Called the Banff Springs Hotel.  The original building dates to 1880 and is still in operation today.

The Hotel is located in the Canadian Rockies.  The question became how to build this rendition with a similar appearance.  That's where the American Skyline product came in.  With the help of my crew, we produced a surprisingly good rendition.

The one problem was the roof.  We fabricated, with card stock and tiny scissors the top and 92 windows.

The Railking Police Station lends itself well to being kit-bashed: this 4-story building took 3 buildings to make.

Banf hotel and the surrounding forest is certainly a bucket list type place to visit and camp.

You could probably look up "Twin Towers" to see the topic on how they got built as that is around the web somewhere. There will be a bunch more photos coming up of them next week.
