There's way too much in the secondary market. Shop there.
I collect PW myself, but buy scale and modern. Obviously Lionel has figured out that there is no money to be made in making Pullmor, magnetraction, ozone throwbacks. There are so many out there at way cheaper prices than Lionel could make them for new. Plus, why would you want a new Pullmor motor made in China? I like the old American made motors. That's what the ozone reminds me of.
The scale, fragile (because the details are SCALE), complicated behemoths are here to stay because that's what people want. Just because what you want isn't good for business doesn't make them wrong.
My post wasn't a judgment of right vs. wrong. I am not admonishing Lionel, just a making a statement of preference. They can devote all the resources they please to the scale stuff, Nascar, or those silly roller coasters. Fishing reels is probably next. Their business, their call. They are not focused on classic toy trains because Lionel is not currently led by a man who respects this aspect of the hobby. His background is NASCAR toys.
The secondary market is great, and so were new remakes of old trains. In fact, nice remakes like the Conventional Classics series were a terrific experience for those of us too young to have had the experience of buying a "new" postwar type train. Just try and find a nice, reasonably priced, postwar UP anniversary set that hasn't been all beat up by some "baby-boomer" kid years ago. Forget it.
