I'm surprised no one has mentioned the trackside cranes. The one with all the remote features would be a great hit for me and guests. The price tag is steep @ $600 list, but I'm already trying to find a way to justify it in my mind.

That is an interesting item, but it was in the previous catalog as well.  I suspect that's why it's not getting much mention in this thread.  (and as you suggest, the $600 price tag probably doesn't help the enthusiasm)

The thing I find lacking is that it's mounted to the static base, not more like the traditional gantry model where the train can run under it.  I know it's probably necessary to do so for stability because of the added size and weight, but it alters the play value (in my mind at least).

Sorry Lionel, but not everyone wants can motors, grimy tires, 0-72 curves, fragile trim and complicated electronics.

My post wasn't a judgment

hmmmm

TrainingDave - GregR's post sounded a lot like an opinion to me, and so what?  This forum (and this thread) is chock full of just that (examples from this thread: "Still dumbfounded that this engine is 50 years old and nobody in O gauge has done this scheme;"  "finally, a Canadian Pacific boxcar...").  By the way, TD, I agree that sales figures logically drive what a manufacturer will produce or discard from its offerings.  Regarding your other point, however, I don't necessarily agree with your logic, as there would be no need to ever reissue anything that was ever produced and sold by Lionel if a prior version is available in the secondary market at a discount.

I'm probably not buying anything, as there's nothing that will add any new dimension or point of interest to our layout.  I'm surprised, however, that there isn't a large discussion over the Lionscale offerings.

Believe it or not I like the new little shorty cars. BUT other than with the docksider's I would have no reason to use them.

I'm with you Jim. I have no idea why, but I have to get a few of these.

They would look good with the English 4-6-0 locomotives.  Or the Thomas sets.  Or the Beefs.

A lot of nice things in the catalog but I will save my money. Nothing in this catalog is screaming at this NYC fan. Maybe one of these catalogs will have the unstreamlined Vision or Legacy NYC J3a Hudson. This is actually good, because if they ever do it, I will want more than one!

If this hobby has taught me anything it's patience!

I second that!  Or maybe a Vision Mohawk with all the steam effects of the VL Challenger.  They'd be crowding our layout.

I can see where those fellows looking for more modern scale like Road Diesels would be in Paradise: SD45 Southern High Hood #3137, and of course living in Tennessee, the NW2 CSX Switcher....So far, the engines pictured, look better in person than the catalog illustrations....I have many items ordered from previous Catalogs that should come in, so these engines are my considerations. Good Question, Happy Railroading.......

The two models you mentioned are certainly not "modern", as the SD45 was prior to 1972, and the NW2 was 1940s vintage.

Considering a Mogul for repaint. Feel I dodged a bullet on the latest Lionel 2-8-0, because of the reviews and problems people have had with them. Even though probably BTO, I'll wait for the blow-out sales or secondary market on the Mogul.

Not to be as negative as my first paragraph, I really do enjoy when a new catalog comes out. Like a new catalog, like the responses on-line to the new catalog, and glad to see new stuff being made. I've become very specialized in what I model, or play with, so I don't expect too much that interests me in any manufacturer's catalog, but I still like to see what's in them and how people respond to the offerings.

My list is short, just 5 items, but even with pre-order discounts I'm looking at about $2,000. I was lucky, in that many of the offerings are already on order or even received.

Here's the new damage:

  • GN #400 Hustle Muscle SD45
  • BNSF SD70ACe
  • UP SD70ACe
  • UTLX Tank car 3 pack
  • TILX Tank car 3 pack

Like most of you, I don't like paying that much for diesels, but those 3 were calling me. YOLO!

Hello guys and gals.........

Does this Lionel NW-2 in scale or uses the postwar body for it ?   Does this switcher has 2 can motors and die-cast frame ?  If not then no purchasing this time.  I seen the pages of the NW-2 models in the latest lionel catalog but very limited information on the features it has inside.

Norfolk and Western Y6b though the waethered water stains look a little too pronounced (contrasted) against the black locomotive and should be darkened some - the black and white photos of 2186 do not make it appear to have the really light colored water stains pictured in the catalog image of the model to be built.

Excellent observation. The N&W did NOT have "bad water" and thus their steam locomotives did NOT have a lot of those light colored mineral deposits. However, as well as the N&W maintained, and cleaned, their steam power, the general "weathered appearance" was more coal smoke soot, and NOT white mineral deposits all over the place.

According to this post from Gromet of Nassau Hobby, there was added info provided by Lionel.  NW-2 claims new scale item, doesn't specifically cover frame info you seek.

I think Volume 2 is a good year-end catalog. On order:

1.  K-4s (one of my favorite locomotives.  I have a few train LPs including the Semaphore "ON TIME" recording of the K-4s)

2.  GN Hustle Muscle SD-45 (landmark diesel)

3.  Southern SD-45 (I like the look of the high nose)

4.  O&W NW2 (visited the O&W museum in Roscoe, NY.  I'd like to see more O&W locos and rolling stock including a Mountaineer set.)

5. Four of the  five milk cars (already have the MR on order)

6.  C&EI and T&P express box cars. (like the looks).
