Caljah,

Now I can see the pictures that show your benchwork in the basement, but the track plan (screen shot) has disappeared.

On another note, don't wait too long to do the background whether you will just paint the walls, add any hardboard such as masonite, etc. Whatever you plan to do, it will be a lot easier to do it before you get too far into building the layout. If not sure of what to do or where the scenes may be, just painting the walls, pipes, etc. that are next to the layout a light 'sky' blue works wonders to enhance the way your train will look. The first few pictures on the original post of the thread referenced below, or 'Here', give an idea of what I am saying.

In the corner where the drain comes down, I would make it so a plumber has some access to get a snake in the drain. If

it has a plastic plug in it like the other one I would install a "no hub" cap for easy access.  That is some really old pipe.

Because you know as soon as you scenic the area the drain will plug up....

I have to admire your patience in waiting 2 years to start building - I find the temptation to just lay track and run trains asap difficult to resist. I'm sure you'll find all that planning and research was time well spent.

I'm looking forward to seeing your layout develop.

Good luck

you'll find the planning and research time

To answer some of the questions

JTrains: My home was built in 1851, Joist look "weathered", but are very solid!

Alex, Moonman,  Laz1957 everyone else I would love some ideas about what to do with the archway.

Stoshu, The thought about how to access those pipe went into the planning.

Using Atlas Nickel silver rails and switches.

I think I got most of them.

Well back to the build. Thanks everyone, please keep the comments and thoughts coming.

WOW!!!  Great plan, it does pay to dream, wait, think, dream, wait and think some more!  After more than two years of the same, I begin today and am encouraged by your thoughtfulness and thoroughness - it pays!

All of the preceding comments from the more experienced and wiser Ogaugers are on-the-money, especially those regarding old plumbing, access, backdrop, more industries and old plumbing.  To paraphrase lines from Blazing Saddles, Q: "You said "old plumbing" twice?" A: "I hate old plumbing!"

A quick review of your OGR Forum activity, which includes disposal of PRR equipment and replacement with B&O, shows that you are "intending toward the light."  It's good to know that I have another brother out there!

I think it's awesome.  I see a lot of crawling around, under, over and on top, in your future.  It's not going to be easy to even sheathe that, much less lay track.  Well, not hard, but not easy either.  You seem motivated.  Long may it last.  May you be running trains soon.  Best of luck .

Nice track plan!

There are several places that appear to be a long reach (over three feet) to the tracks. Do you plan to add access hatches?

The whisker tracks around the turntable are rather crowded. I suggest you try it out before you fasten the tracks down.

I could not open the pdf files.

Alex

Hey OnDrew here.

Yes accsess hatches are planned but with all track plans the computer drawings don't allways match up with reality so I'm waiting until I have the track locations set before modifying the benchwork for accsess hatches. There's also room along the left side and the layout along the wall.

As as for the "wisker" tracks there are way more than what I recommend but they were put in the plan to show the maximized potential # of tracks. If I recall there will be a 6 stall roundhouse which is a little more manageable.
