I did a teardown of my oldest RI&P Generals today. Dissesmbled, brushed flushed, & wiped everything.

I have little driver cupping starting on one driver and found some roller bracket plastic flashing had been causing the front roller to partially hang in the up position by the roller axle stub. I removed the flashing and it swings smooth now after 40 years.

The rear roller has a groove started from more pressure, and lots of Super O time (and likely compounded by the engines heavier draw at the better connection).  I'll just swap it with a car's for now.

It was good therapy though as "my hot rod's motor blew"-hot rodded 15buck special-1_zpsdnvv1jdv

It pooted forth a cloudy stream of putrid magic smoke 6ft long, obscuring the the tender and cars beneath the dimming, pulsing street lamps lining the ceilings edge before creaping to it's last stop ever, where it promptly delivered the final insult of leaving me sitting alone in silence, in a now stinky and pitch black room as the breaker tripped; clack.

The teardown of that revealed I had yet another dual winding motor's field coil short out. This post war 249 was the first upright motor's coil to give up the ghost since the 70s for me, but "it is always the field"

I ran my other General for about an hour or so before I take it apart for cleaning too. I had to check out the ceiling layout just to make sure the track was ok after the hot rod cooked..I don't know why but ...playlist was,.... Into the void, 2000 Light Years from home, Interstellar Overdrive , Surfing With the Alien, Spacegrass, Cygnus X-1 book 1&2, & Ziggy Stardust (naturally following the albums intructions max. volume for best results..the knob was on "11".... and the clock nearly was thers too, so I shut down and sat down.

I did some figure touch up, and threw management a fresh shave's  tanline since old G.R. Unt's mustache grew in.

I dremeled and hacked away the jackhammer the guy on the right was holding. Rubbery plastic made it tough. The jackhammer motor was converted to a FRED for a while after simply snipping its chisel off and giving it yellow paint and a réd dot. But that suggests the caboose is on it's way out here, and I don't like that.

Still need to hit the kaki pants with belt & buckle color, maybe a black wash to darken lows/crevasses/ seams.

More progress for sawmill area. I decided to make a pump house to sit on the pond edge. I hot glued a foamcore building structure to cover with the roof and siding. I still have to add a light inside and one outside and then plant on area and scenic with junk and ground cover. I also scratched a pipe rack out of some styrene  shapes.

Cutting coffee stir sticks to cover walls

Adding wood grain with Zona saw

http://www.studiozphoto.com/PumpHouse3.jpg

All stained with black shoe polish

http://www.studiozphoto.com/PumpHouse5.jpg

By putting boards on paper plate, elevating one end allows the stain to be darker on bottom ends of boards when on wall. The wood grain that is added with saw really shows once stained

Now I added paint color onto boards so that some of the bare boards show through( peeling paint )

Here is the pipe rack painted and some weathering powder for rust

Boards glued onto foamboard, strips of black construction paper glued to card stock roofs

There are two front posts that go under front roof but they will get glued in once it is planted on layout

More photos once it's on the layout

Hi Elliot, thanks, I try to get here daily, but this flu and snow has been kicking my butt!

Butch, here at the store we got 26" and at our house we got 32", just to much for this old guy! LOL

Welcome back Mike. Glad to see you are alive and well. 32" of snow would kick anyone's butt. WOW
That's more snow then we get in an entire year sometimes. We had a messy inch on Tuesday and now it's gonna be near
60 deg Saturday. Go figure.

Keep warm and get well...THEN BACK IN THE TRAIN ROOM SIR!!!!!

So today I started off with a bang. I started laying in the base foam board but that is on hold because now another quest has started to find out where the heck I put my package of hot melt sticks for the glue gun. Guess for me it never fails when you are a person who just piles up everything and expects to find what you need right away. Pics......Paul

Same here Paul- nice work.

Here are a few pictures of the Jig I have been working on!20190131_07415720190131_074923

Mike, why the clear plastic?   I made a simple jig to help locate the mounting screw positions using the template that comes with the Tortoise machines.   Once you locate the position of the track switch and have drilled the hole for the spring wire (BTW, I used a heavier gauge spring wire, the one from Tortoise is better suited for HO switches), I inserted the pencil stub up through the hole and hammer tap the finish nails to mark the location for the mounting screws.   I also drilled pilot holes using an appropriate sized bit.   Putting the two side screws in place made it easy to position the Tortoise machine and spring wire (the two screws held it in place).   It was then easy to add the other two side screws to securing the switch machine.   I assume you have full access for under mounting these switch machines.

You will be happy with the Tortoise switch machines.  In my opinion, they provide the best action and have the advantage of controlling track power as well as signal lights.

Here is a link for my signal light construction:

Good luck with your track and switch instillation.   We have been on the Gulf Coast for a couple of weeks - needed a respite from the snow and cold.   Back home now and trying to get caught up will all the progress and posts.

Cheers, Dave

I really like the MTH Gulf tank cars. Of course, there was no prototype for that paint scheme but I don't care :~) I am reminded of the Gulf Building in Pittsburgh. When I was a kid the top of the building changed colors with the weather forecast: pink for fair and blue for rain IIRC.

Mike g, you have your work cut out for you with that snow. Is that a big snowfall for your area. When I lived in western New York ( Niagara Falls Buffalo area we called that a dusting.  I remember one storm I started at the garage up there and by the time I got to the road I turned around and it did not look like I had done the driveway at all. But anyways just paced yourself and take some good breaks, Don't need to run yourself down and get sick again.

I did not do much today because it was Valentine's day. I did manage to do a couple of smalls things but no pics. Tomorrow I got the whole day to work on the gorge.........Paul

Hi Guys, ITs me Mike G. Sorry I have been gone for awhile. Things have been hectic here, I am still fighting the flu, the store got 26" snow, and the house got 32" of snow. I have been trying to keep things clean here at the store. Then I am informed that I need to shovel the snow off our roof at home because of the snow load. I couldn't even get into the driveway. So I had to go back today and use the tractor to move enough snow to get into the garage. I am so done with SNOW!

There has been no train work, no buying, selling, trading. Just this dam store and my Flu and Sonw!

I would like to say after reading 6 back pages there has been some wonderful work and special days! Jim, happy belated Birthday! Elliot, congrats on the new Breaker! Paul the gorge is looking wonderful! Chris A. you building is growing everytime I see it! Looks Great! Bob, that sure is a sweet little layout thanks for sharing, Everyone else I promis to make it up down the road, but I am whooped and feel like Sh**!  I will try to keep in touch more often.

Jim, I haven't had time to even check the mail! I will let you know!

Mike,  I'm glad you are at least back reporting in.  Yes, there were 2 pages just since you wrote 22 hours ago.

I know what you mean about the roof.  We had 40" once and even though I moved a lot of snow off, we had some roof damage.  Fortunately our insurance paid for the repair.  I sure hope you get over the flu soon.  You have really been beat.

Write when you can!

Larry, Always nice photographs on your layout!!!

Thank you very much!!!  I had my last physical therapy appointment today.  The pain is virtually gone.  It was brutal 2 1/2 months ago.  The only time pain appears is if I try to lift more than 20 pounds (that's a guess) or do something like run the sweeper.  The snow blower didn't bother me.  I do still get tingling in my foot when I get up from sitting any length of time, or sit in an odd position.  The main concerns are my weak droopy toe, although it is making progress.  The other is that I am susceptible of the disc bulging again if I lift poorly.

I have never heard of stem cells for any back problems.  I will try to do some reading on it.

Lee,  great photos thanks for sharing the back story and photo on the restoration.

Larry,  thanks for your kind words, always great to see photos of your beautiful layout.

Mike G:  I feel for you.   We had the winter from hell a couple of years ago with multiple 2 to 3 foot storms.   Do they sell "roof rakes" out there ?   I had one when I lived in Maine, and finally got rid of it.... Of course the next winter we had a record breaking 110 inches of snowfall LOL

Mark -  Glad to hear the back is healing and you're starting serious construction on the new layout.

After taking 2 days off to do "life stuff" I am back working on my kitbash....  Doesn't look like much progress, but at least all 4 floors are glued together now, everything is square and plum... the 1/4 inch MDF base plate is cut and notched,  and the interior Framework is about 1/2 way done.   It's all quarter-sawed oak  1/4 x 1/4 inch beams and the joists are leftover mahogany scraps, from window restorations....

Found a really cool HO scale set of mixing tanks that I bought at the Big E show for $2.00... Had to do some repairs to it as it was poorly assembled, but it looks good on top of the 2nd story roof...

The dentist finished my root canal today, and raided my wallet to the tune of a couple Legacy Bluetooth diesels. The impending crown will be another two.  Oh well, it doesn't hurt anymore (til I get my credit card bill).

Mrs Big Boy and I then got haircuts and had a romantic McDonalds lunch at home. After that we did a little railroad paperwork at the kitchen table. She wrote out the engine cards for the newest additions to the fleet, and did the initial folds on the last 200 car cards. I took over from there, and used my burnishing tool to flatten the fold on each one.

To form the pocket for the waybill, the sides have to be taped. Almost made it, but ran out of tape, and was too lazy to go downstairs to get more for those last few on the table.

This batch will will keep me out of trouble for a little while, but I own way more than 200 cars that aren't yet on the layout, and more are coming. Next time Micro Mark has a sale, I'll have to order a few hundred more.

I showed everyone here the lumber carrier build I did. A modeler I know from Japan sent me photos of some bike chain he used on his Fordson tractor drive made in Japan. He sent me a link to where he purchased it on Amazon. Anyway, currency conversion would have been less than $20 USD for the kit. When I looked the part up on Amazon on the US side of things they wanted $89 + $10shipping for the same part. I decided to try and make my own.  So, I downloaded a CAD file of bike chain and printed it in a flexible resin.

First print, 9 minutes later I got out the 4 pieces I printed on the build plate seen in the photo.

The resin is clear, but they make pigments to color it. I added black tint but it still looks pretty clear. The size I estimated scale on and it came out too small.

I resized it and ran a second batch (14 minutes) .

The resin is very flexible, almost like a rubber band. I might mix some flex with some standard black resin so it isn't so floppy to handle.

Here is a photo of the 2nd batch draped on the lumber carrier for size comparison.

Here is the chain with the black regular resin added to the flex. It's perfect. Flexible enough to position without breaking but stiff enough to not be a limp noodle.

You can see in these next two photos the individual links

Dave, thanks the plexi glass is for if I don't get the hole perfect, I still have a little wiggle room!

Vincent, don't feel guilty! I would move there also, but the wife hates the heat! LOL But right now she isn't liking the snow either!

Jim, yep we got snow in multi feet! Way to much for me! LOL

Andy, very nice video! Just wondering how wide is your bench work?

Larry, thanks! I really enjoy seeing your layout! Its just wonderful!

Paul, its a lot lately, last year we only got 6"

Woodson, I never complain about the heat! I hate the wet and cold! LOL

Mark, thank you sir! All that is left of the flu is the cough, but it still sucks! But the darn snow is still here with more next week! Mark, I am glad that your starting to feel better, but don't over do it!

APPLES55 (PAUL) That's down right funny! Thanks for the laugh, I really needed one!

Chris, Thanks, They do sell roof rakes here, we just don't have one! Your kit bash is looking great, and coming right along! Thanks for sharing with us! I love to fallow your post as there is so much to learn!

Elliot, I am glad you got your tooth fixed, but sorry it put you back a couple engines! Sounds like a great day with the wife What a great hubby! Nice job on the cards! I don't know if I will ever get to that point!

Elliot, I’m sorry the dentist hurt your wallet so.  Your valentine meal sounds like ours at KFC, but our older daughter came along because her husband works evening shift.  That’s a lot of cards!  Your wife is great for doing all that work!

Al, the chains are great!!  I’m glad they turned out so well!

Mike, my wife has been coughing since mid December.  She had been checked and no lingering bronchitis.  Just a cough.  Hers gets worse as evening comes.  Yes it is tough trying to not overdo it.  Also trying to not twist or over reach is something I need to always think about.  I really don’t know how I hurt it in the first place, but it just kept getting worse.

Thanks Mike and Mark.

Mark, we did KFC  last week. Mickey D's wasn't our first choice today. We have a Mongolian BBQ place we like, but when we got there at normal lunchtime, they were serving dinner all day for Valentines Day. We never do dinner there, because she's allergic to shellfish, and they have shrimp in the buffet line where there can be cross contamination.  We'll go next week for a normal lunch. We were both disappointed, because it's been a while since we've been there. It's tougher to go, since I started dialysis, because I lose three lunches a week. We have name for when you get psyched for something and then it gets scratched, by choice or outside force. We call it "being Lucyed", as in Charlie Brown and the football, when she yanks it away.

Making the cards is just time consuming. The hard part is still coming.

  1. Unpack the cars
  2. Enter them into the database on the computer
  3.  Put them on the layout
  4. Print the list of new cars for my wife
  5. Get her to sit down and write out the cards (this takes a bit of work)
  6. Repeat until done

She's gotten good at drawing the Bluetooth logo, which she put on all the new engine cards.

Elliot, Being Lucyed!!  I like that!  I'm going to have to tell my wife.  She is also allergic to shellfish and avoids all fish.  Besides that, there are lots of things she can't eat.  She can eat the KFC bowl with chicken, mashed potatoes, cheese.

That is a lot of steps to making the cards, especially tedious with a large layout and large fleet.  I can see it would take some practice making the Bluetooth logo carrectly.

Paul, I'm right between Buffalo and Niagara Falls on the Niagara River. I'd say Mike G's snow is just another day around here.

Paul & Al  -  I live in NH now and we get our share of snow.  BUT, I graduated from Language school at Syracuse U. in 1965.  That year we had either snow or rain on part of every day from Thanksgiving to Easter.  Incredible lake effect precipitation in the snow belt of northern NY state.  When you went to the gas station to get gas, the attendant would put a red foam ball on top of your antenna so your car could be seen approaching intersections over the snowbanks.  What do they do now with no external radio antennas?  Amazing ability for Syracuse to dispose of the snow on Lake Onandaga with parades of dump trucks out on the ice.

I can't wait to see videos of yall running operations on that big layout!  Get on YouTube and look for  O gauge switching operations or layouts...  There are 2...  And a couple talking about it.   Including our own Laid off sick and The Glacier Line.     One I have watched a bunch of times has this grumpy dude with a flat top haircut and this other feller running the train..   The "sky crane" gets used a few times lol

Elliot maybe you can make a video just of just a bit of switching?   May go VIRAL!   May not get but one hit! : )

It's looking good. May i suggest if you want more of a lake effect and less of a muddy pond effect add some VERY dark blue to the center area and then a lighter blue - green toward the edges. Also you might want to add some light tan near the shore where it is shallower.

I remember those days at SU quite well (BA `66). Only once in the winter of `65 -`66 did classes actually get cancelled for a few days when we had about 60 inches of snow over a 3 day period. I still live here in the southern Adirondacks where a grey sky and snow is the norm from November until April. It makes you more appreciative of the warm summer months.

I feel for you. My daughter is going to school up in Potsdam at Clarkson. Not only the amount of snow but it is ungodly cold up there!

Was able to get some accessorizing done this morning before work.  A little backstory: After my Dad retired from the Arnold Bread Company he opened a bread store on Rt 22 in Union, NJ.  He called it 'Seven Macs' because there were seven of us boys in the family.

Still some additional work to do.

Fantastic looking building.

Steve, Seven Macs looks great!  Your back story about the name is wonderful.  That is a nice way to commemorate your dad's business.

NS6770, the trains is really great looking!

Matt, the photographs we have of the 40" snowfall we had back in '96 are buried in an album somewhere!  Remember film everyone!

Speaking of lake effect, we are enough south of Erie Pennsylvania to not get hit with the lake effect, but I have been up there and seen it!  The ice from waves crashing into docks, etc.  make for some really eerie scenes.  Get my poor pun!    We are also just enough west of the Allegheny Mountains to usually escape it too.  God gave Great-great-great-great-grandpa and G-g-g-g-grandma Boyce a gift when they first got their claim to homestead back in 1795!

Added another open hopper car to "the fleet" today. This car began its life as a red colored Lionel Leigh Valley, just one of thousands that Lionel made over the years.  Based on the AAR trucks that were originally on the piece, it's most definitly made after 1957.

Bought it on eBay for about $8.00. Had to straighten the sides of the hopper as the previous owner had rested something fairly heavy on the car bending both side walls of the hopper inward. Replaced both trucks with a set of bar end units with couplers that work (the original AAR couplers were broken). Removed and filled the road markings, primed and painted it in the traditional C&NW Stage Coach green and added the front and rear truck/step brackets and the brake wheel. Made and applied the decals and topped everything off with a coat of clear matte finish.

Number 63506 was an open hopper car that was once owned by the C&NW.

We got between 6-8 inches of snow but it's all melted from the roads by now and just enough to make the landscape white by now. Hasn't been freezing for several days now. Yeah, doesn't sound like much but there are almost no plow trucks in WA state, so many roads never get cleared off and tens of thousands of snowbound folks were without power for a while (thankfully we were only snowbound for one day and the power only flickered once for a second).

Last night, I changed the horn settings on my Whitcomb On30 diesel. In doing so, I screwed up the throttle settings as it would then only go from stop to full speed and nothing in between. Bachmann doesn't have a default setting for their decoders, so I had to go back and change every setting to it's original value until the problem went away. But I still got a better horn sound out of it!

Nice-looking car, Dave, and your story about repairing a "junk" hopper is informative.

Productive morning. I basically got the back roughed in and the small area between the bridge abutments filled in. In that area I am planning to put in a culvert pipe with water coming out of it and it will run down intop the gorge. In the last pic I am thinking of adding two more waterfalls onto the second waterfalls maybe two thirds of the way down from the top. This afternoon I'll cut some pieces of foam to see how it will look. Pics............Paul

Paul that is really looking good!  You are out pacing me on getting the project done,  I am missing some turnouts that I need to get my stuff rolling again!

We are expecting 12 inches of rain in the mountains around us and 8 to 10 inches of rain here in the valley in the next few days.  I think it is the weather system that dropped all that snow on MikeG!

Lee those TOFCs are awesome!   I may have no choice but to buy those  Trailer Train cars with Southern trailers.   Can you post a picture of that Tucker you have?

Erica nice repaint on that hopper!   Do you guys own/run a model business??

Al you always impress me..  Do you run the company that makes turntables??

I would love to have a job that included trains.  My neighbor at work designs and installs engine upgrades to real trains!  Puts new engines and computer systems in older diesels and they run the 3 rivers rambler in Knoxville, TN.

Jim

Andy, thank you for the information!

Dave, the lake is looking good, coming right along!

Bob, I hope you did good at golf course and kept it in the fairway! LOL

Steve, That sure is a great looking building! Also what a great way to give tribute to your dad!

Erica, Nice job on the hoppers!

Lee, Lucky you! LOL Nice looking Whitcomb On30 Engine!

Paul 2, Looking good, 3 waterfalls are way better then just one solo waterfall! I wish I could vision things like that, Maybe one day!

Lee D. The Piggybacks look great! Wonderful job!

LeapinLarry, for a man of few words you sure know how to make this hobby stand out! Very well said Sir!

As for me, we just got home from the store not to long ago and I wanted to get up to date on everything! Heck I haven't even made it out to the train room yet today. I don't know if I will or not, a little tired, maybe a nap!

No pictures but I reinstalled my TIU after a 5 week stay at MTH for the TVS diode mod under warranty. Actually MTH had the TIU longer than I did. While it was there they were nice enough to upgrade it from version 6.0 to version 6.1 so I can eventually add a WIU. While the TIU was gone I upgraded my 5 non command locomotives to ERR TMCC. So now all 8 of my locomotives are command equipped (2 DCS, 6 TMCC). I'm just happy I can now run everything from one remote, instead of using the CAB-1 for the TMCC locomotives and using the transformer handles for the DCS locomotives. 😁

After a Valentine's Day break, I finished my 10th 24-Pack of Preiser 65602 Unpainted Seated People in the past 30 days.  The Yellow clothing pack is pictured as I readied the next, #11, for Lavender clothing.  That gives me another 240 people.  I have three more boxes at home to finish, and another thirteen on the way from Germany - I bought two more boxes last night.  The twenty six boxes of 24 will give me 624 people for the Lionel passenger cars arriving around Christmas 2019.

I took a break from painting and converted two Atlas O Trainman 40' B&O Sentinel Box Cars to three-rail.  I will sell the two-rail trucks and coupler boxes on Ebay later this month when I finally sell extra Atlas O 3-rail rolling stock.

Trying to keep up a good head of steam, but I may need to use a pusher engine, to keep me moving through this up-hill painting project.

Sincerely, John Rowlen

John, I had never heard of Sentinel Fast Freight Service boxcars, but yours is very nice-looking. The web tells me that their distinctive blue and silver boxcars were used from 1947 to 1958, when the service ended. The boxcars were then painted brown, although some lasted until the mid-60's before being repainted. One fellow claims to have seen one in the early 1970's, in bad shape, in a railyard.

Carl and Mark,  The Preiser 65602 people count is now well over 3,500 completed in the last five years, probably more.  I also purchased 18 packs of 48 (864 )  Chinese seated figures according to Evermodel on Ebay, thirteen of the 8402 and five of the 8406.  The 8402 Seated Figures from China has the man turning around and talking and five other 1/45 (smaller) figures that fit well in the Lionel 21" Dining Cars.

The boy with his hand on the table had his hand cut from his knee, bent upward, and placed on top of the table.  The young girl turning to her left and the two women with hats are among the six 8402 1/45 figures from China.

"Surgeon John" aka, "Butch R.", has had very few fatalities in his cutting, grinding, and bending as he placed people in the cars.  Unfortunately, a few did not literally make "the Cut."

Sincerely, John Rowlen
