I reply to the E-Mail with the word BULLS@#t!!!!!! in bold, italic, 36 point letters and send it back to them. It doesn't do any good, but, it makes me feel better.

Nothing but packing for my trip to Strasburg.  Me and my son will be visiting the 611 on Fri and Sat.   Friday we plan to just walk around and photograph her, hope to hit her coming and going from Strasburg in a few places.   Saturday we are doing the Hostling Tour, whistle blow, and a ride.

We can not wait!!!

As much as we all love steam engines (I assume), its hard to compare to the shapes, sizes and colors of a large fleet of diesel locomotives.

Great collection Brian. Now post your endless collection of Inter-modals.....

Thanks Chris for the tip. I’m putting the Lionel trucks on the All Nations Boxcar and yes I need to fill the holes to re- tap them to get the right look they were set forward to much

Lee had another idea if you're interested....  Find a bolt and nut in the size you want to mount the trucks to the car floor, then epoxy the nut in place with a steel washer to anchor them together and to the floor of the boxcar...     If you use a good epoxy and apply a light coat of oil on the bolt (small machine screw), it won't bond to the nut and will keep the epoxy out of the threads....  With a second washer on the opposite side of the floor, the machine screw could actually serve as your "clamp" while the epoxy sets up...  Then voila you'll have basically installed a threaded metal insert for a couple of cents worth of parts.

Mark, my daughter in law makes my decals.  She made a shirt for me with my logo on it.  My son did well.

It was 95 again today.  Too hot for the train building.  I scored major points with the boss by installing a fancy new kitchen faucet.  A one hour job took all day.  Dinner made it all worth while.  I will install a huge ceiling fan tomorrow.  Do you think she will cook steak, potatoes, and cherry pie?

After dinner I visited web sites of some OGR forum advertisers.  There are many impressive choices to tempt my wallet open.

Bill

Bill, Your son did well indeed!

I would be happy with just the cherry pie!!

I had some fun at church this afternoon when I told what had happened, except that I explained that I gave them my credit card number, bank account number, and Social Security number.

They quickly guessed that I was joking, but I did get some horrified looks at first.

I reported the post to Microsoft, as I always do with posts like that.

I never thought of that I have a Lionel Standard “O” gondola that has give me fits about the truck height. I think your idea will work on it I will post the repair when I get to it I was just looking at it this evening in the garage. Thanks for all your help. There’s not Home Depo near me but there’s a Menards I’ll check there to see it they have any S&K aluminum stock.  If that don’t work there’s a hobby lobby across the  highway  from where Menards is  i’ll check there also

The last couple of days I removed my bridges in anticipation of building my rock/cliffs.  I was going to try the cardboard strips but didn't really like the angles it was giving me (need to come down pretty steep).  So those then were removed and now I am cutting and gluing foam pieces together to give it a look that I was trying for.  Should be able to finish all the foam tonight.  The foam will come up and then go over the tracks in a more mountain shape.  In case anyone is wondering the blue is just paint to give me a temporary feel as to where the water will go.  I plan on adding woodland scenic's realistic water once the walls are done.

Bryan, I like the foam for the base of your rock walls.

Johan, always great!

Here is how my new layout stands.  Roadbed and track is all in for this double deck section.  The buildings are just set there to give an idea of how the town will look someday, and jumpers are through the roadbed ready for wiring.  I was so used to pre-wired switches, I forgot I needed to put jumpers in to power all the parts of the Ross switches.  Oh well, they are easily taken up since the track is only screwed down; no glue.  I apologize for the darkness.  I need to put more lighting in.  When I take a daylight photograph right now, the sun shining in the window messes with my iPhone 6s camera.   And yes, my wife is going to move Raggedy Ann and Andy along with a few more items someday.

Mark,  Looks really good.  The town scene on the upper platform will be excellent.    Some of the Ross switches come with the "pre-wired" option...   as you point out it's not that big a deal... If the center rail of your return loop is continuous from both sides of the turnout, a single drop anywhere on that loop will solve your power problem as long as you installed center hot rail track pins on both outlets of the switch.  On passing sidings and spurs I almost prefer the switch not pre-wired, but it's all personal preference.

Larry. Great looking “F” units and pic

Chris. You will have to show us your “F” units when you get to them

Brian. What’s in the Boxes!! I haven’t seen that much Intermodal since I’ve left the NS rail this morning

Johan. Another great pic!

This is going to be  a great train season. Everyone is showing off a lot of very good pics of their layouts. I am back to outdoor work again but today I got my Weaver die cast trucks from Patrick's trains. There are for the two Weaver cars I got from the BAY that I am waiting on to get here. Starting tomorrow I hope to start hanging the rest of the lights. Told the wife I have to run to Sam's Club to get a few more of them. Couple more to finish and a couple for backup. does he still have some in stock I need to repair a few cars my self. MTH trucks will work on weaver cars? Sorry to bother you for not educating my self on this I’m still learning who bought out who and what works where

Added 4 more whisker tracks to the turntable. The original 4 are for locomotive storage and can each hold an ABBA set of F3s. The 4 I just added are much shorter. One is for delivering a coal hopper to the coal tower, even though all my Santa Fe and Southern Pacific steam locomotives are oil fired. The coal tower is there in case a coal fired locomotive from the eastern side of either the Santa Fe or Southern Pacific makes it out to my layout (plus I had the coal tower from when I was a kid so might as well use it). The other 3 tracks are too short to hold a locomotive. I'm not sure what I'll use them for but I'm guessing to store MOW equipment. Which requires buying some MOW rolling stock.....

Sorry I haven't been able to input of late, hospital appointments and grandchildren have prevented me from doing anything to my very small layout, but I have been quite busy with the layout of late though.

I have added two more IKEA shelves just to extend the length of run, this meant putting up shelf brackets and relocate some of my "stuff". I have to order some more "grass"underlay matting, unfortunately the store where I bought the last lot only have it on special every so often. Still that's for a bit longer in the future., (Hopefully) I think someone said that God looks after model railroaders?????

Anyway I hope you like the photos.

Thanks again guys and happy modelling.

Matt. Thank you very much. I really like spend a time and try take a pics around the layout. 🤝

Finished the backdrop for my radio tower.  The backdrop is made from layers of foam board and heavy matte board that I pinned to the wall.  The different layers were first painted green (wish I had used flat black), then covered with Woodland Scenic clumped foliage that I chopped up in our blender.   I used three different shades of green, one for each hill relief.  No spotlights on this area, so I think I will live with the results.   I also added a tunnel portal and some tall trees and other greenery in an attempt to hide the mirror.   I think I will consider this project done for now as I have to turn my attention to a new eBay buy.

I picked up a MTH photo-2 Consolidation that I plan to detailed and assigned to the DM&IRR.   I will attempt to add some detail and markings to simulate #332.  Years ago, I purchased a set of DM&IRR O gauge Champ decals off the bay.   Two sets arrived!    So my thinking: a wayward blinking red LED inspired the tower construction and now an unused decal set inspired the need for a new steam locomotive.    It never crossed my mind to re-list the set on eBay!

I remember asking Elliot Feinberg, (aka: big_boy_4005), “How many engines do you think you need on your RR?”   His answer is always: “Just One More!”

Hey, one wife, many trains!!   It works for me!

John,  I have never seen smoke come out of remote coupler before either.....  I am thinking that either the insulation on the coil wire, or the tape they wrapped the coil in is overheating and smoking in which case it's likely going to fail.   I can't think of anything else that could explain smoke.... unless the design has changed, remote couplers are electro-magnetic coils... I guess if the coil was designed and built correctly the other variable that could cause overheating could be too high a voltage being sent out by the control board...

Chris A,

The Track Mobile uses a TMCC board, not Legacy.  Perhaps there is a voltage difference in the TMCC compared to Legacy boards.

The Track Mobile is selling new between $324 and $350 on Ebay  There are two used ones at or under $200.00 which is not a good sign for a brand new release to sell so cheaply.

Thank you for your input.  I will call the dealer tomorrow.  Lionel Service is backed up and can't get to my three H-10 Steam Engines for a while and their warranty is up in December 2019.  My 1931260 Challenger #3985 is at Lionel now.

Sincerely, John Rowlen

Dave,   really nice transformation of this area... great job.

Johan,  I will have to see if I can locate the June 2019 CTT issue.  I am going to several train shows in the next few weekends, maybe I can pick up that issue and not have to drive to the nearest train store which is 50 miles away...

Chris. Thank you. Very friendly.🤝 I think Dave would be a more than happy. 🚂🚃🚃🚃

Johan

Morning everyone, It Saturday and for once for me a train room day!

Paul 2, That should give you plenty of light for the layout now!

Lee D. Glad to see you feeling better and that you get a weekend in the train room. Its a good feeling when you can park the mower and run some trains! LOL

Johan, when you get the book and DVD let us know as I know I wouldn't be the only one wanting a copy!

Dave, the back drop looks great! Nice work, it really ties in the rest of the layout in that corner!

John, with the couplers smoking like that I would be scared to even have it on the layout! I sure hope you can figure out what is going on with it cause that's a cool looking car!

Well guys today I get to play in the train room, I have a couple of TSM's to install, work on a couple switches, but most of all RUN some trains! LOL

I hope everyone has a great weekend and I will check in later tonight! Remember if you can try and find some time to have fun with your trains!

John- definitely looks strange to me. It's unusually consistent though, as if it had a smoke generator in it. If it was an electrical issue I'd expect the smoke to lessen as what ever is burning is used up. I'd get it serviced asap.

Bob

Happy Saturday all!

I really enjoying all these great photos and videos, please keep them coming!

I'm looking at a possible move soon so have been reluctant to build any new layout modules. In a way that's been good though as it's letting me get to some backlogged projects. One of them is relocating the headlight to the nose on my SF30C and capping the upper location, also added some grab irons to the top of the nose. Going to try to prime today and get it painted and put back together this week.

Wired in the last 4 whisker tracks and added extra ties. Still a long way to go on the locomotive storage/service area. I have some Plastruct tanks on the way for diesel, fuel oil, and water storage next to the track that runs to the turntable. I've also got a bunch of balsa and poplar wood under the layout waiting to be turned into a 4 track 22"X36" locomotive service/storage building. Should keep me busy when the weather cools off soon.

GANDYDANCER1950, Wonderful photo!

John, looking good sofar! I sure hope you post some finished product photos!

Lou, Thing are really shaping up. It wont be long and you will have all the wisker's filled!

Well as for me I was able to get out to the train room today. I got to all the switches I wanted to work on today but one, I saved that for tomorrow. I also got the last 2 TSM's installed and wired for my reverse loop and they work like a champ!

One down fall was I had to do some adjustments to my lift bridge, it must have gotten bumped or something cause the tracks were not lining up like they had before. I installed new guides and adjusted the kill switch for the cylinder that lifts and lowers the bridge. Seams to work fine now, hope it stays that way!

So tomorrow will be once switch adjustment, cleaning and football! Oh and a few silver bullets!

I hope everyone had a great day and have an even better tomorrow. I will check back in in the morning before heading to the train room! Have a great night!

Hey Y'all.  I pretended it was not 94F today and put in seven hours of hard labor.  I spent the day wiring accessories.  First I connected my Lionel radio station.  That allowed me to listen to Alabama whoop the University of Number Next.  Both times I graduated, "Bear" was the coach.  I also wired my #445 switch tower, a Passenger Stop Station,  a whistle freight shed, #195 light tower,  installed a 10mm LED in a D56 building, two old L&N lanterns, and two #6019 remote control track sections.  Oh yea, I vacuumed everywhere too.  My layout looks much better all lit up.  Tomorrow I will be sore.  For my next miracle I will add a LED to my mechanical semaphore.  I am tired now.  Very tired.

Bill

Bill, sounds like you were busy in your Sauna/Train room! LOL I cant wait to see everything lit up I bet it looks great! I hope you wont work that hard today on the day of rest! If anything just enjoy what you got done and run some trains!

As for me I am going to work on one switch, vacuum, watch some foot ball and clean under the bench!

I hope everyone has  a great day and find sometime for fun with your trains!

Did you put oil on the coupler thinking it would close easier?

This afternoon one of my car-stoppers quit working. It was sticking and  wouldn't retract with the spring pressure exerted by the Tortoise machine.

A reminder of what this gizmo is I'm going on about:

IMG_3372

I scratched my head until I noticed the Sun was and had been shining through my South facing window (because lower in the sky with Fall) right onto the track. Careful examination showed that the track had expanded slightly (remember Sun-kinks) and was pressing against one side of the car-stopper outer tube just enough to flex it a thousandth or so and cause the plunger to bind in the tube. Once figured out an easy fix by removing the uncoupler section and enlarging the hole for the track-stopper tube to give clearance.

        IMG_3949

Problem solved. In future I will establish clearance as seen above as Tastrack is not immune to a slight bit of creep for one reason or another.

I was right.  After yesterday's high temperature marathon, I woke up sore.  Today I put a LED in my #6-2311 mechanical semaphore.  I will revisit this later to reduce the light bleed.  The #395 floodlight tower was not working this morning.  When I powered it up with 9VDC, in the house it worked.  I will attack the wiring the under my layout with a volt meter tomorrow.

Upcoming: How do I make a a clean cut in balsa wood?  I need to make some cribbing.

Mark, the shay is amazing.

Bill the LED install looks good.   I have had good luck slipping some heat shrink tubing over the LED to stop the light bleed and narrow the light beam.

Mark,  nice video.

Johan, the C20 caboose looks great.

I went to a TCA train show this AM in Mass.   Found this really cool Weaver 40 foot wood side  DL&W Gondola with the nicer metal Weaver trucks and couplers... then as I looked around the table I found 2 other Weaver cars with the metal trucks/couplers.  Ended up buying the 2 other cars for $25 total...  I am not interested in the cars, but 2 pair of brand new Weaver Betendorf metal trucks with metal couplers were definitely worth $25.   Also got a great deal on some almost new Ross Regular 11 degree switches and 8 Gargraves uncoupler tracks.

Had a really frustrating experience last night when I turned on the layout...  Had Legacy control issues and track power supply problems I have never experienced... then when I got those to settle down, one of two DZ2500 switch machines on a long passing siding started switching while I was running a 25 car train over it ????   Really.   No I don't have them wired for TMCC or Legacy control, nor did I have them wired for "non-derailing" automatic operation....  Ended up pulling the switch machine out, and putting a replacement in, but by midnight I was too tired to keep messing with it....  Not a today problem.

Bryan, The cliff/lake area look great! are you going to add rock molds or just paint it?

Vincent, Nice work on the station! I could not and would not attempt anything like that! To much work! LOL

Johan, wonderful job on the weathering! I still think you should make a YOUTUBE video on how you do such great work!

Lew, Nice easy fix! But can you tell me what you use it for? I have never seen anything like that before!

Mark, great little video! But 1 scale MPH is just to slow for me! LOL

Eric, The transfer table looks great! I really like the whole service area! Nice work!

Bill, Nice job on the semaphore! I am sure you will have the light bleed over taken care of in no time!

Well today I spent a good amount of time out in the train room, I did stop for the Seahawks game which they won just in case anyone wanted to know! I also got a nice surprise, I got a call from Briansilvermustang! We talked trains and football! Congrats to his Browns for winning also!

Well today I worked on some switchs that have been giving me problems and I think part of the problem is the weight of some of my cars. They seam to ride up on the points when coming in from the back side of them instead of moving the points over. So I am going to start to weigh all my cars and make sure they are up to standard weight! I also got my grain building set and fasten down!IMG_20190929_174535434_HDRIMG_20190929_174544150_HDRIMG_20190929_174615052IMG_20190929_174627570

I also did some cleaning of the layout and the room its self! I found a freebee I forgot to tell you all about! A friend of mine is moving to town to be near the Hospital, His wife and him are not in the greatest health and both are in the mid to late 80's. Anyways he invited me over cause he was getting ride of some lumber and said I could take anything I wanted for free or he was just going to burn it! Well I ended up with a lot of building lumber, but I also ended up with 5 packages of 1/8"x1/2"x 36" balsa wood and 1 package of 1/8"x1/4"x36" balsa wood. Here are a couple pictures of the train room and my freebees!

Chris A. Great looking wood sided car! Your right you cant beat Metal trucks for $25! I am sorry about your night, but things will get better! at least that is what everyone keeps telling me! LOL

I really hope everyone had a great day with there layout and trains!

Thanks, Mark.  That's the great thing about this forum, though!   I did some searches last night and found several threads describing other's having the same kind of issues.  Most contacted Dennis Zander and he took care of the issues either by reprogramming the DZ2500 or replacing it... I'll probably reach out to him Monday and describe what was happening....  It was just one of those nights...   I just wanted to move the trains out of the way and lay bend some gargraves for the main line.  Never got there.

Mike you're right,   2 pairs for $25.00 was a steal.  You're layout is really coming together Mike.... Glad you isolated the car weight issue with the frog derailments...

Mike, because Lionel-style couplers typically require a lot of force to couple, (crash coupling ) and I enjoy slow speed switching, I developed a gadget to hold a car in place so an adjacent car can be slowly coupled to it.

I posted a topic on it  awhile back:
